Hi ! Does the hardensuse script something wich make the mails in /var/spool/mail set to chmod 600 ? Sometimes I see in /var/log/warn: procmail[20002]: Insufficient privileges to deliver to "root" or similar. chmod 660 "by hand" -> /var/log/mail: procmail[22902]: Enforcing stricter permissions on "/var/spool/mail/root" Where can can I reset this behavior or is there a solution? length of a login

Hi guys. Once upon a time...we were limited to 8 characters for users' logins (and apparently still limited to 8 characters for passwords). I currently manage a few servers were I had to implement longer usernames. Now, I get repeated notices form SuSE seccheck scripts about user logins having more than 8 characters. I browsed through man pages, faqs and howtos - but I could hardly find any reference to this issue. The only reference I could actually find was an SDB article: "Length of a Login" (SDB-ke_loginname). In this article it is stated - for example - that "You cannot use useradd to add users with a login name longer than 8 letters " - which is not true as of SuSE Linux 6.4... I'm not having problems with POP access either. The only annoying thing is that using "ls" in long listing format I get usernames truncated to 8 characters (but I get correct UID with "ls -ln"). The article also states: "Lots of programs restrict accounts to 8 letters and cannot handle long names". 1) Which programs? 2) Should I worry about using logins longer than 8 characters? 3) And what about using some commonly used characters (as underscores or dashes)? Dial-on-demand

I'm running SuSE Linux 6.4 as a gateway to the Internet for my home LAN. I can manually dial with wvdial and have /etc/ppp/ip-up successfully restarting SuSEfirewall, so that traffic flows to the Net. I have installed the wvdial.dod script per the How-to from the SuSE support database, entitled "wvdial and dial-on-demand" and have also applied the wvdial fix that corrected a dial-on-demand problem, but dial-on-demand doesn't work. (I can still dial manually.) I suspect there might be a setting that is required in the firewall config to allow packets to trigger the dial-on-demand, but I cannot find it. If I set FW_DEV_WORLD_ppp0="192.168.99.1 255.255.255.0" (to force routing to the local IP address defined in wvdial.dod) then routing no longer works. Without such a setting, I cannot see how packets can get to pppd to trigger a dial. Has anyone any ideas on this? /Craig Wyndham (Sydney, Australia)

By the way: the script : newaliases is just a small program, which executes makemap (program, delivered by sendmail) to generate hash encoded files. (faster access, since it consists of binary info's). The most convenient and reasonable solution for this problem doesn't even touch its origin. Forward mail sent to root to a dedicated, unpriviliged account. Reading mails as root is definitely not a bright idea. [suse-security] DialUp with Firewall

Hello list, I have a little problem with my dialup connection. After I get connect, I have to restart the SuSEfirewall script to activate the PPP device. So I need root privilegs.
