SSH Authentication

Hi! I implemented a ssh conection from the outside to my intranet. This ssh requires a username and a password. In terms of security what is more secure: require authentication (username and password) or having the public key of each user that connects to our intranet in the authorized public key lists (in this case there is no need for username and password)? In the second case there is no need of authentication and only the users wich have the public keys in the list are allowed to enter in my intranet. Therefore: as long as this tool is not enhanced to also protect open/fopen calls against symlink/hardlink/pipe attacks, several more buffer overflow types, system/exec* function protection etc. it is not useful to use this tool. I would rather propose to use the secumod module which comes with SuSE Linux since 6.3 and maybe the secure-linux kernel patch from www.openwall.com - these two tools enhance your security. multi-services server securing

Hello there, I feel erroneusly (?) secure after .host.denyed in.telnetd and in.sshd from everywhere except one pc, which is denying all exept keyboard. I belive that if i can keep hosts.deny and hosts.allow files safe, and from time to time patch most actual security holes i`ll be conditionaly safe. Em i wrong? Probably I do. I just cant imaginate how system can be cracked in lower stage, so that is my problem. I heard that inetd is very insecure, and some peoples using tcpd (or soundlike). I run harden_suse, but was forced to answer 8/10 to no, as my server should provide a lot of public services, and have world writible directories as well. And thats right - this script was developed not for systems like mine one. However i`ll run SuSE-firewall-3.0 script, to make my system even stronger. But thats all. I dont know what can i do else. I should keep folowing services open: httpd; smptd; pop3d; ftpd; snmpd; named; inetd; sshd; nscd. So if you know how to keep them at minimal risk, or know some holes at those, i would be very gratefull for any info and/or tips. I dont ask to do work for me - link to good manual would be nice too. Hi ! Does the hardensuse script something wich make the mails in /var/spool/mail set to chmod 600 ? Sometimes I see in /var/log/warn: procmail[20002]: Insufficient privileges to deliver to "root" or similar. chmod 660 "by hand" -> /var/log/mail: procmail[22902]: Enforcing stricter permissions on "/var/spool/mail/root" Where can can I reset this behavior or is there a solution? Is PAM the culprit?

I have the following problem: adding a login account, deleting it, adding the same name again will lock the user name out with the above message. After deleting it, I made sure that the user home directory is gone, the entries in /etc/passwd, group and shadow for this user are gone. Then, when I add the same user name again, I cannot use the graphical logon window - I geht the "Xsession: login for <user> is disabled" - message box prompting me to click "OK" - Bs - it's not OK!!! I think there is somewhere an entry remaining in some auth database and the authentication fails. SuSeFirewall and DHCP

I have a question about setting up SuSEfirewall using /etc/rc.config.d/firewall.rc.config. I am pretty happy with the firewall, but I have been noticing in my logs what appears to be packets from my ISP's DHCP server (port 67) to my port 68. The packets seem to be being DENY'd and if that is the case, I don't know why. I set FW_SERVICE_DHCLIENT="yes", but this is what I'm seeing in the logs: Jun 29 19:40:37 telluride kernel: Packet log: input DENY eth0 PROTO=17 177.206.122.48:67 94.169.114.118:68 L=328 S=0x00 I=16105 F=0x4000 T=252 (#122) And to really confuse matters, if I test it with ipchains -C, it indicates it should be accepted!!! This is not SuSE specific. From `man bash': If the shell is started with the effective user (group) id not equal to the real user (group) id, [...] the effective user id is set to the real user id. According to the man page it should be possible to disable this security feature with the -p option, but this options seems not to work. Problems after Kernel Update

Hello, alot of customers report problems after updateing the kernel. Please, execute 'mk_initrd' and 'lilo' after upgrading the kernel. BTW, some people ask me about the security bug I mentoined in the 'Solution' section. This bug was a FIN flooding vulnerability, which only exists in the plain 2.2.16 kernel, not in 2.2.16 + Alan Cox' erratas kernel and not in the 2.2.17pre* kernels. Kernel question

I have a semi security related question. I prefer to run my console in 800x600 (easier to get everything on the screen to read) and when I compile the 2.2.16 kernel, the video comes up blank right after loading lilo. The system is running perfectly (ssh running, all daemons are up), but no video. I have tested with SuSE 6.3 & 6.4, as well as Slackware 7 on 4 different computers using different video cards. I have recompiled the kernel well over 30 times trying different options and combinations, still a no go. I have also been working with another admin and he's run into the same problem. Between us I *know* we've hit every kernel combination. I'm thinking there might be something else that I need to recompile somewhere, but can't seem to find what it is. I've been searching everywhere for the last month and decided that I'd ask some more experienced admins for their advice. One last thing, if I get the kernel patches for SuSE 6.3/6.4, the resolution works fine, but I'd like to compile my own kernel to get it as small as possible. For the time being I've dropped the console resolution back down to normal (vga=normal instead of vga=788), but if anyone could point me in the right direction or give me some tips on what I can try to get the resolution back up, I would be extremely grateful. Hi, I'm setting up a firewall with 6.4. At the moment, I'm trying to secure the machine. I wanted to set the /-FS to readonly, only /home,/var,/tmp are writable. All works fine, but after closing a tty, mingetty is respawning too fast and I'm unable to use this tty any more. I tracked the problem down to an write-attempt to the cua-device, but the system reports that / is mounted readonly. Is there a possibility to supress this write-access in the respawning-process? -- Stefan Bauer
