Salut, Our server is in trouble -- and so are we -- every night at 00:00 the /etc/passwd-file is erased (= set to size 0) up to now we checked the following things: * tcpdump (... no suspicious connections) * log-files (... are ok) * cron-jobs (... no suspicious cron-jobs) the passwd-problem seems to be the only peculiarity -- at least we think so. The (NIS&NFS) server is a SuSE Linux 6.3 system/Kernel 2.2.13, running ypbind (ypbind-mt) 1.6 ypserv - NYS YP Server version 1.3.9 (with securenets) Universal NFS Server 2.2beta46 syslogd 1.3-3 sshd Did you encounter a problem like this before? Firewall config for Netmeeting

Hi all! I 've a big problem.. I don't know how I have to configure my Linux-Firewall, IPCHAINS, that my users can do Netmeeting.. I' able to connect to another user, the other user can hear me but I can't hear the user.. The other user also can't phone be.. But that's not the problem.. What rules I have to set including the masquerading rules that my machines behind the firewall can use netmeeting and can hear others from the Internet? I've a Suse 6.3, firewall ipchains and two network cards.. one for internal, one for external... Thanks for you help, Chris

SuSEfirewall

Hello all. I try to setup an internal router/masq/firewall. I use before an behind the new firewall 172.16.1 and 172.16.0. When I try to forward an request on the internal/http server the packages will accepted but the client receives no more packages. It logs the incomeing but no outgoing packages. I've set it up like in the example file, last sample. How knows to solve this problem? Kind regards Karl-Heinz

unknown service on port 1024 and open xdm ports

Hey all, On my systems I try to close as many ports as possible without realising a firewall !! For the portscans I use "nmap". While examing all open ports I found at least three ports which are difficult to close: port service damon 515 printer lpd 1024 unknown ??? 6000 X11 xdm Then I've heard from someone on this list, that there's a possibility to close X11 while using the parameter "-nolisten tcp". This works fine and now port 6000 is closed. While I'm looking for the other ports I restarted the XDM process and so port 1024 changed into another one (1032, 1447, 1452) with different service-names (iad3,apri-lm,gtegsc-lm). Then I stop the XDM process and these funny processes were gone !! When start XDM again, there will be another port with another service-name !! Do you now what happen there ?? I tried it on another machine too and there I've got the following ports: 1024 unknown (after bootup) 1352 video-aktivman 1401 goldleaf-licman I'm not sure if this a security-problem or not ?! I hope that somebody can help me. Kernel crash.
