mentoring for ucosp

Gents, I dunno if the other mails came through, as I got a bunch of bounces for unknown reason(s) but here is another try. It is about a university program in Canada where students can work on FOSS for grades for a semester. It's about 8-10 hours a week for a couple of months, nothing huge, but nice. We would need to provide mentoring and junior jobs for them. Question is: can we? I heard you were working on this, so maybe you can answer that question :D Received from Andrew Louis: Hi Jos, thanks so much for your email. I just replied to Lydia in another thread about a KDE project. What do you have in mind for something openSUSE-related? What we need right now are basically mentors (esp someone who can come to Toronto from October 1-3 for our code sprint) and a good project idea suitable for a team of 5-10 upper year computer science students to work on. Any ideas? If we want to make this happen though, we have to move fast as students will begin to pick which projects they want to work on soon. Worst case: we try this for January. Another question (and I hope this is not too off-putting): would Novell be able to help the program out by sponsoring the travel costs of a few students to come to Toronto? We're still in need of a bit of financial help to make sure it happens. See below.So this dude (and maybe others) are looking for junior jobs. And I've heard from some prusnak dude here in the office that you're working on that. What can I do to get this guy a mentor? Where is the best place for me to go looking for outstanding work? I wouldn't mind something KDE-related. Note that classes start in 3 weeks, so I really haven't left you much time. (Sorry!) There's a possibility that I could do this in the term beginning in January instead. That would give you more time to get organized. But I have a guaranteed slot in the program right now, and I'm not sure that I want to risk that just for the *possibility* of doing it next term. As to me, I'm far from a whiz at programming, but I'm no slouch either. I get good marks, but don't have a lot of experience. Egbert's Week 33: - caught up on email - successfully survived an update to 11.3. As usual it took a few hours until everything was working as expected again - this time it was less painful than before though. - had a meeting with Klaas. - Improved infrastrucutre to better cope with email/IRC information flooding. - Continued the discussion with AJ regarding a strategy for openSUSE: AJ feels we are closer together are actually talking about the same things but just don't fully realize this. - Dragged some SUSE Labs people into finally speaking up about their feelings regarding a strategy. - Met and had a beer with our new community manager. More L3 stuff to be taken care of: #462283 xdm issues on SLE11 SP1 - took over as this seems to be related to a problem with finding the correct ID for authentication. Work in progress. #628346 Issues with dual monitor support. Work in progress. #626657 Xvnc CPU utilization too high during connection. Still work in progress. #604720 NLPOS9 configuration issues for evtouch driver. Resolved. Hi, i did finish the wiki milestone. I Started to explore a {news,lizards,spotlight,planet.o.o) replacement on the basis of wordpress and a few plugins. Attended Jos introduction. Talked with Jos, Cornelius, Klaas and AJ about the strategy discussion as this was a hot topic in the discussion we had during Jos introduction. I plan to get into Elgg and think about all the connect.o.o features Pavol collected on openSUSE:Connect and how they will fit into the overall structure of *opensuse.org. Finally i plan to have a nice HackMeck at FrosCON with the guys :) I am blocked by nothing. Henne -- Henne Vogelsang, openSUSE. A bunch of us meet next weekend at FrosCON, we all meet in October at the openSUSE conference and December is a very slow month anyway. So there actually is no need to do a off-site in this year. ** FrosCON Klaas will send around travel details. We still need more exposure for this as we did not attract contributors to the hackmeck yet. So Henne will try to get us on the froscon frontpage. He also brings hardware for the server part (machine+switch).
