Good and not too expensive scanner
Hi list, I am planning to buy a new but not too expensive scanner. I am checking sane's homepage to see what scanners work with Linux, but I am just curious to listen to your experiences with Linux scanners. I am using Suse 7.1 Advices of any kind are welcome:-) Regards, Praise

A pretty important spec is the Dmax or dynamic range of the scanner. Consumer units often do not even say what this is, but low-level professional scanners will usually report this. 2.8 will probably do, while 3.0 or so would be desired and 3.4 or so is pretty high. Basically, with a higher Dmax, you get much better detail in the shadows and less propensity to blow out the whites. A crappy scanner with a low Dmax will result in dark shadows with a lot of dark grey pushed to black and the highlights will blow out. Depends on what you're using it for. ===== Daniel Woodard __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Find a job, post your resume. http://careers.yahoo.com

Hi Praise. I'm using a Hewlett Packard ScanJet 5p for a long time, without any problem. Even the strange triangular "SCSI" card that comes with the scanner is supported! This scanner is "very old", but if I would change it, I would go for a modern HP model. HTH.

Hi Praise! I have a Musteck TwinScan II scanner. It has the annoying problem, on occasions, of the scan bar stopping during retract, or jamming into the head or foot of the scanner, or stalling somewhere in the middle of the scan. This was a problem when I was using Win95, five years ago also. I called Musteck then and talked with techie, shortly after the warranty expired, and he admitted that scan head stalling and/or jamming was a problem, but said 'too bad'. But, using Scan1.0 with Gimp I have excellent results most of the time. Jerry

Oh, I forgot to add that the special scsii card that came with the printer worked only on WinXX. I purchased a $50 scsii card from SouthWest Products to use the Mosteck scanner under Linux. Jerry

Hello All, I do recommend , if you can find one , the UMAX 2200 SU, with an in-built transperancy adapter. This model allows real flexibility , as you can use it on a SCSI or USB bus. Fashionable , it isn't . I find it a durable and heavy-duty scanner. I use it as an emulated SCSI device and SANE picks it up nicely as a /dev/sg*. Goodluck. Kemdi

Kemdi - Took your advice and purchased the Umax Astra 2200 ($40 US) and have it connected via my SCSI II port. During boot I get the message /dev/umax2200 not found or something very similar to that. Device is set up as id 3 on the SCSI chain, is not terminated (win98 sees it this way so I'm relatively certain I don't have a termination problem), is on during boot, and sems to be O.K. as a device. /etc/fstab looks like: /dev/umax2200 /umax2200 auto rw,noasuto, user, exec 0 0 and there is a directory /umax2200 directly off root. However, the folder icon for that directory displays with a padlock in front of it so I know i've done something wrong. Any advice welcomed; and, as another silly question, is thwere an icon for the scanner with the green triangle to use for when the device is mounted. I can only find the icon for the unmounted scanner. thanks, dave

Hello Dave and All, $40.00 ? Phew !! Not bad , if the scanner is new. Welldone. Now, about the configuration of this baby. Please do , at least for now, comment out the entry for the umax2200 in your /etc/fstab. The entry is the cause of the message you get on boot-up. Did you make the /dev/umax2200 yourself ? Bear in mind, that you need generic SCSI support, not SCSI emulation, as I previosly purported in a previous answer, enabled in the kernel to get the scanner to show up as a /dev/sg* i.e a character device. Try running >> "cdrecord -scanbus" without the quotes , as root. Does it show up ? I'm assuming, of course, that you're running SuSE on full throttle, with most of the packages, in place. An easy graphical way of finding out ,is to call up KDE/SuSE Control > > System >> Linux Kernel Configurator Open up the SCSI Support sub-menu. Hopefully, SCSI generic support is enabled. If not, oh well......., time to recompile that kernel, I think. Once in place, you can access the scanner through other programs, such as xsane, Gimp, OpenOffice and so on. Hey even commandline. Then you can even assign your icons, which, by the way, I have not tried , in 1 year of using this scanner . Anyone else, with easier options ? Please help out !! David !! Take you time. We'll wait .

Yes, via right click | create new | directory. I think this works properly.

I must be doing something wrong as I can't get this. Selecting KDE | Control Center | System | I get only two options which are Date & Time and Login Manager. Am I selecting the wrong options?

Hello Dave, OK..... I dont think your /dev/umax2200 is, at all needed. Leaving that aside for now. Let's use YaST in console mode : Go to System Admin ==> Integrate hardware ==> then call up Configure Scanner. If successful, so far, the device should up as /dev/sg3, I think. And with some more info underneath, like vendor , host and type of device. Then , and still there, choose the scanner make , i.e, Umax Hopeful, that's it. Let SuSEconfig do its thing. Then , and still there, choose the scanner make , i.e, Umax
Doing yast | System Admin | Integrate Hardware | Configure Scanner brings up a dialog with /dev/sg0 ... /dev/sg7 section in the upper right hand corner with the cursor on the sg0 line; to the left it says: SCSI device Recognized scsi info Host: scsi0 channels: 00 Id:03 lun Vendor: umax model: Astra 2200 Type: scanner <continue> <abort> selecting <continue> jumps to the next dialog where it says: SCSI device: [/dev/sg3] Recognized SCSI information: Host: scsi0 Channel: 00 Id:06 Lun:00 Vendor: NEC Model: CD-ROM Drive: 466 Rev: 1.26 Type: CD-ROM ANSI SCSI revision: 02 Scanner type: [UMAX] <continue> <abort> and I chose <abort> as the ID 06 IS my CD-ROM and the above info is at best just a wee bit confusing at this point and I don't want to mess up a working CD-ROM. Should I have chosen <continue> instead? It seems like yast has confused the ID 03 (scanner) with ID 06 (cd-rom) or am I just more confued than I think I am?
Hopeful, that's it. Let SuSEconfig do its thing.
Let's know what's happening.
And that's what's happening. ;-)

Hi David and Kemdi Hope you don't mind if I jump in. I posted this a while ago, and it may help you - it applies to 7.1 and 7.1, and a Umax Astra 1220S, but I don't think things should be too different. It draws heavily on the excellent Chapter 6 of the SuSE Configuration manual, but streamlines the instructions a bit. Remember, your mileage may vary! Make sure the scanner is plugged in and turned on. Check that the package scsi in group ap is installed - this contains a bundle of useful little utilities for dealing with SCSI. SANE and XSANE should, of course. also be installed. Your SCSI card seems to be working OK. As root, change to /bin and run: ./rescan-scsi-bus.sh This will bring the scanner to the attention of the system. You should get output like the following: Host adapter 0 (advansys) found Host adapter 1 (ide-scsi) found Scanning for device 0 0 5 0 .... NEW: Host: scsi0 Channel:00 Id:05 Lun:00 In my case, the first host adapter is the SCSI card, and the second host adapter is a SCSI emulator for the IDE CD-writer on the box. As root, run: sgcheck This should give output like: device host/channel/ID/LUN type Vendor Make /dev/sg0 0/0/5/0 Scanner Umax Astra 1200S Next, ensure everyone has permission to use the scanner. As root, run: chmod 777 /dev/sg0 Finally, check that your user can see it by running, as the user: scanimage -L This will ask scanimage, a command-line scanning program, to list the scanners it can see. You should get output like the following: device `umax:/dev/sg0' is a Umax Astra 1200S flatbed scanner Next, launch the GIMP, and select File -> Acquire -> Device Dialog. The SANE setting and preview panels should open. Set a photo on the scanner, and click Acquire Preview in the preview panel. You should hear the reassuring noise of the scanner head rolling down the scanner, and the preview panel will show your photo. Hope this helps. Kevin

Hello David, Kevin and all, I think you've solved it....... Thanks Kevin. Permissions, Permissions. That's the ticket. In my setting for sg*, I have crw-rw-rw- 1 root disk 21, 5 Sep 24 01:54 /dev/sg? And as for XSANE seeing it, you can , according to SuSE Quote: Please try the following procedure: (This helpful hint was kindly provided by Mr. Jörg Bierwagen) Put a # at the umax backend entry (resp. all the ones that aren't needed) at the file /etc/sane.d/dll.conf - afterwards xsane should start without problems. End of Quote Please David, remember that the system sees the scanner as a character device, NOT a block device. Do away with trying to mount the scanner, and clean out the directory /umax2200 and the device /dev/umax2200 . Just to say, that /dev/scanner is a link to /dev/sg0 in your case. Lets try it again. Good Morning Kevin and Kemdi - Thanks so much for all the help. When I booted this morning I observed a wee bit of information flashing by that seemed to mimic what should have resulted if I ran the script file you suggested, so just for fun I jumped into bash and as root ran both sgcheck and chmod, jumped back out to user and ran scanimage. In all cases I got the output as you described so I tried performing a scan. Viola, all worked just as advertised!!! Many Thanks!!! Now all I have to do is get real familiar with SANE. Somewhere along the line I guess I've missed the study of what is a block device, character device, and any other particular device. Advice on where to learn more about "devices" greatly appreciated. At this point as I understand it I should delete the umax2200 directory under root and remove the line in /etc/fstab for /dev/umax2200 BUT there should be a line in /etc/fstab for /dev/sgo. Is that correct. If so, is the file type auto, or something else? And as for linking the scanner, I am unfamiliar with how to make a desktop link with the icon so I can just click on the link and immediately bring up SANE to start scanning. A review of "man link" is about as clear as mud! thanks again, dave
Apologies! It's me again, still having printing problems. I have been trying to find why none of my KDE applications now print correctly - it used to be just KWord which didn't, until I did a clean reinstall of 7.3 a few days ago. Screen fonts are OK, Print Preview is blank, and all fonts print as practically identical sans-serif. If I run KWord from a terminal and try to print or preview, I get the following error messages: QDIR :: read DIREntries: Cannot read the directory /etc/lp/printers QDIR :: read DIREntries: Cannot read the directory /etc/lp/member QDIR :: read DIREntries: Cannot read the directory /usr/spool/interface/lp /etc/ and /usr/ do not contain the other directories. I have looked at SuSE 7.1, upgraded to KDE 2.1.1, with KWord 1.0, (which prints perfectly) and these directories are missing from that version as well. Is this part of the KDE/QT problem mentioned by Chris Howells and others, or could it be a problem with my installation? I haven't seen this problem with all KDE applications mentioned before. In the last couple of days, I have reinstalled SuSE 7.3 three times to see if the problem goes away. It doesn't. I am using the default "Generic UNIX LPD print system". Switching to the "LPR (Standard BSD print system)" just gives me a very long and complex error message. Abiword 9.4.1 and Star Office 5.2 print correctly with no error messages. Any pointers will be very gratefully received. Many thanks Keith

Hello Dave, That must surely feel good. That's Linux for you. Hehehehe !!! Now , about /etc/fstab : No need at all for your scanner to be referenced there, since /dev/scanner already points to /dev/sg0. The whole gamut in the /dev directory are mainly character devices. Thank SuSE, for all that. /etc/fstab is referenced by mount() , I think, searching for mainly filesystems, i.e. block devices. As for the desktop link, why not build one, if you're using KDE, by right-clicking, ==> new link ? ==> application. Under the tabs should be a place to put in the pathname of xsane. Sorry that I hardly use KDE, though I have the latest KDE 2.2.2. Im in LOVE with WindowMaker. Shout, if you're stuck. I'll then fire-up KDE. Good Morning Kemdi - After all your help I hesitate to trouble you further but I have another question for which I think I have a partial answer. After getting both scanners to work flawlessly under Linux, I now want to add a SCSI DVD reader to the chain. Unfortunately the only IDs left are 0-2, which means that no matter which I take it will be the first item in the chain. That would, I believe, then make it, the DVD drive, sg0 and move all the sgx numbers up by one. If so, then the UMAX would move from sg0 to sg1 and likewise the Nikon Coolscan would move from sg2 to sg3. Correct so far? That's the part I think I know. What I don't know is this: is Linux smart enough to make an internal adjustment so that I don't have to do anything to insure the proper functioning of the two scanners (reassign the numbers) or do I have to do a complete reinstall of the scanners; or is it something in between? And if I have to do some things are there any files I have to manipulate? Stuff like that. Thanks for all your help, dave

I added a line to /etc/fstab for the DVD identified below by the >> << marks /dev/sdb3 / ext2 defaults 1 1 /dev/sdb1 /boot ext2 defaults 1 2 /dev/cdrom /cdrom auto ro,noauto, user, exec 0 0 /dev/cdrom2 /mnt/cdrom2 auto ro,noauto, user, exec 0 0 proc /proc proc defaults 0 0 /dev/sda1 /windows/C vfat noauto, user 0 0 /dev/sdb2 swap swap defaults 0 2 /dev/hdc4 /zip vfat noauto, user, exec 0 0 /dev/hde1 /hardcard auto rw,noauto, user, exec 0 0 and created a desktop link for the DVD drive. sgcheck now reports the following: Assignment of generic SCSI devices, device host/channel/ID/LUN type (numeric type) vendor model: /dev/sg0 0/0/2/0 CD-ROM TOSHIBA DVD-ROM SD-M1401 /dev/sg1 0/0/3/0 Scanner UMAX Astra 2200 /dev/sg2 0/0/4/0 CD-ROM PLEXTOR CD-R PX-W124TS /dev/sg3 0/0/5/0 Scanner Nikon COOLSCAN II /dev/sg4 0/0/6/0 CD-ROM NEC CD-ROM DRIVE:466 /dev/sg5 0/0/12/0 Direct-Access IBM DRVS09V /dev/sg6 0/0/13/0 Direct-Access IBM DDYS-T18350N /dev/sg7 0/0/14/0 Direct-Access IBM DDYS-T18350N /dev/sg8 0/0/15/0 Direct-Access IBM DDYS-T18350N wherein all the sg numbers for the hardware have advanced up one unit, i.e., 0 -> 1; 1 -> 2; 2 ->3, and so forth. I then tried to run the Astra 2200 but Sane said it couldn't identify any SCSI item. Realizing that this might happen, I then turned to yast1 in console mode and did the following: 0 Yast1==> 1 System Admin ==> <continue> 2 Integrate Hardware ==> <continue> 3 CD/DVD configuration ==> <continue> 4 SCSI [ /dev/sr? ] ==> <continue> 5 SCSI cd 0 [ dev/scd0 ] ==> <continue> which puts me back to line 3 no matter what I do. Since I can't get this configured, it appears that I can't configure the others either, so I'm now sort of dead in the water device wise. To make this just a little more challenging, my CD drives are now somehow crossed linked. Using the desktop icons, the DVD icon addresses nothing; the Plextor icon addresses the DVD drive; and the NEC icon addresses the Plextor. Whatever is in the NEC drive is not recognized. The identity of each on the desktop link (icon) is as follows: DVD /dvd trying to mount this device gives the error "mount: special device does not exist" Plextor CDR-W /dev/cdrom mounting this device reads the DVD NEC CDROM2 /dev/cdrom2 mounting this device reads the Plextor drive So, may I request a little help in getting all this resolved by a means other than removing the DVD drive? ;-) Changing ID numbers is NOT the answer as all have options only between 0 and 7; if the DVD had offered a number between 8 and 11 I would have selected that and avoided all this "interesting" behavior. thanks, dave
I barely caught this topic. I have something to say about scanners, avoid AGFA at all costs, that company sucks, their drivers are closed source, there are no linux ports, the company spams you once you give up personal information, they corrupt their database so you can't remove yourself from their email list, I have written the ftc and complained but they still spam me. Then let's talk about the product, the 1212p is a total piece of junk, it has problems in ever operating system, saying there are errors. I tried it in win95, win98, NT3.51, NT4, Vmware running win98 no go at all, their ftp site uses passwords (you can sniff them out if you have to) but their servers are so slow they time out on the downloads, their pages are loaded with cookies and javascript. There is no "REAL" email address to send mail to, the owner of the server block doesn't give a shit either. I HATE this company. They are the bottom feeding scum of the internet. I Hope that nobody ever buys a damned thing from them and they go bankrupt. As far as other scanners, I got no bitches about any other company that makes em. Ya can't really go wrong. Although, you might just check out the SANE support list to see if yours is listed just to be on the safe side. On Thursday 22 November 2001 03:07 pm, you wrote:

It is unfortunate that they don't have Linux support, but even Epson's (a more Linux friendly company) drivers are closed source.

I have been using a 1212u (the USB version of a 1212p) for over a year and have only gotten 3 emails from them about product deals.

Don't know about Windows, but it works perfectly under SANE. BTW why are you using it under Win95 in VMware when SANE supports it? Setting up the "P" version under SANE is straight forward, the "U" version requires a patch to the 1212p driver.
but their servers are so slow they time out on the downloads
Never had that problem. -- The box saids Windows XP or better, so I installed Linux
Charles, Don't try to talk down what I said. I've told the FTC all about AGFA's shady business. Aparantly unless you've lost more than 5000 dollars it isn't worth their time. What am I doing about it? Upholding my promise to AGFA to expose their crappy company for the piece of dung it truly is. Someone asked about scanners, and cheap ones, and basically I am saying to them, "sure , buy a cheap scaner, but do not buy an AFGA scanner." And I am simply give reasons why. Another thing. They never sent my rebate either. It's been over 2 years now. It may be over 3 years now, but frankly I've now lost track of the exact dates. They ignore me to get removed of their mail list, they don't answer their technical support, they are a fraud regarding their damned rebates, and their product is the crappiest product I have ever seen in my life, in fact their company is the scummiest fradulant scam, and a source of spam, their webservers all have cookies and javascript and passwords to snoop on you, their tech support contradicts their own selves and then ignore what they do not want to hear, so they go into automated reply mode, which after 30 days if the problem is still existing they just ERASE IT LIKE IT WAS NEVER THERE! I REITERATE STAY AWAY FROM AGFA, OR YOU CAN LEARN LIKE I DID. NEVER TRUST A COMPANY THAT DON'T HAVE A REAL EMAIL ADDRESS!

I am not. I said win98 under VMware it wouldn't run. I said it has errors in EVERY other operating system. Setting up the

but their servers are so slow they time out on the downloads Never had that problem. Well I have, and that is why I am telling you about it. I wouldn't just sit here wasting my breath on it for the hell of it. I was getting less that .5k/sec on their crappy server, and I told them about it as well, I finally ended up sniffing their password for the ftp which "used to be"
The 1212p is not supported by SANE last time I checked. And that was probably about 6 months ago. I highly doubt this has changed. If Anyone happens to work for them feel FREE to forward this email to the OWNER of their bogus company and tell him I say they suck. And while your there ask for my REBATE! I never received. publicftp/guest or some damn thing like that, I forget now. I needed to know it so I could use a resumable download utility on it because it was so bad. And after getting the download it didn't help, there were still errors, bla bla bla SCSI error, contact your vendor. Well I contacted them alright, but they don't give a crap about their customers. They lied about their rebates, their website is crap, they spam you when you tell them not to, their product is crap. Any more questions? Thanks phil

I wasn't, I was just trying to relay my experience with the 1212u that I bought.
Aparantly unless you've lost more than 5000 dollars it isn't worth their time.
Hum..., I have to do some investigating. If what you said is true I would not buy another product from them. So far the only product that I have bought is the 1212u which I am quite happy with (no trouble with SANE and relatively good quality scans for the price). I basically bought it because I wanted a CCD based scanner that was supported by Linux and it was within my price range.
Another thing. They never sent my rebate either. It's been over 2 years now. It may be over 3 years now, but frankly I've now lost track of the exact dates. They ignore me to get removed of their mail list, they don't answer their technical support...
That sucks. No wonder you are angry! I have never had to use their support so I don't know the quality.

Oops, I have just checked the SANE page and you are right. Since my 1212u works with a patch, I assumed that it was patching the 1212p driver, but apparently it was a patch to the AGFA SCSI driver. regards, Charles -- The box saids Windows XP or better, so I installed Linux
