Good Morning Kemdi - After all your help I hesitate to trouble you further but I have another question for which I think I have a partial answer. After getting both scanners to work flawlessly under Linux, I now want to add a SCSI DVD reader to the chain. Unfortunately the only IDs left are 0-2, which means that no matter which I take it will be the first item in the chain. That would, I believe, then make it, the DVD drive, sg0 and move all the sgx numbers up by one. If so, then the UMAX would move from sg0 to sg1 and likewise the Nikon Coolscan would move from sg2 to sg3. Correct so far? That's the part I think I know. What I don't know is this: is Linux smart enough to make an internal adjustment so that I don't have to do anything to insure the proper functioning of the two scanners (reassign the numbers) or do I have to do a complete reinstall of the scanners; or is it something in between? And if I have to do some things are there any files I have to manipulate? Stuff like that. Thanks for all your help, dave
