What I did last week: - post-FOSDEM followup. I still managed to forget some parts of it though :/ - upstream version in status page + looked at the issue reported by coolo. This is most probably a UI issue. - prepared and delivered a GNOME 3 talk here in Grenoble + I took some time to study the gnome-shell code. That was long overdue. It's cool stuff, and it's easy to play with. + it went quite well, with more people than I expected (for a small event) + a few people came from really far (travelled 3 hours!) + interesting feedback, and most importantly, I know what I should keep/remove in the presentation to improve it - GNOME 2.29.90 + released tarballs + review submissions from contributors, and did quite a few myself - Had fun with the gnome-screensaver security issue - (other packaging things) What I didn't do last week: - upstream version in status page + test my patch to move the data to the status api What I plan this week: - upstream version in status page + test my patch to move the data to the status api + improve upstream version ui - freedesktop.org: + migrate desktop-file-utils to git (repo was finally created) and release a tarball; it's been two years since the last one... + migrate the fdo specs to a git repo and create some infrastructure for the spec website + integrate some patches in cups-pk-helper and do a new release - review a big gnome-session patch - finish the PackageKit update that I started (takes time because of patches...) - somehow manage to find a full day to push moblin packages in openSUSE (I don't think I can do all this this week ;-)) Vincent -- Les gens heureux ne sont pas pressés. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-boosters+unsubscribe(a)opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-boosters+help(a)opensuse.org

State of the Umbrella-Project

Hi, I like to share my thoughts about the Boosters Goal "Integrate all Infrastructure under one Umbrella" or the "Umbrella Project" in short, see [1] I think we are a bit stuck with the project and I like to reanimate that as we want to move forward. Where are we now? The Umbrella Team has come up with some requirements which should be met on the wiki page [1], and has documented a design concept at [2]. The core point is that we want to create a task oriented structure that guides all of the identified user groups to the content they request. The discussion ended up that the new theme has four menus - Downloads - Support or Help - Community - Development So far I think that is great work and Robert has proposed the so called Bento Theme that would provide these requirements, a preview can be pulled from [2] I think to make make some progress with the project we should narrow down the requirements of the goal to make it actually finishable. My concrete proposal for that is that we succeeded with the goal when - we have developed the bento theme that all openSUSE pages can actually use it without changes on the framework - we have ported one openSUSE page to the new theme to proof its working, specifically download.o.o and download.o.o/search - we have documented how the port is done - we have made some buzz around it to motivate people to try a port themselves. I realise that it is a danger to have only one or few pages ported to the new theme, but I would stand it. If other ports feel that they're absolutely needed or very difficult, we add another goal to the list at [3]. I will schedule a meeting on monday 13:30 CET which is mandatory for the Umbrella Team and open to all interested to discuss. I hope that will bring us back on track again. - Worked some more on KMS integration internal into radeonHD. - PrettyBoot: started to look into how to make the boot experience smoother. Ideal goal: when booting in runlvl 5 start boot into the display manager with the one single background, avoid flicker once the KMS gfx driver is loaded. - Fixed bnc#566624 + duplicates. Wildchar characters in the device IDs confused the matching of modaliases to the pciID of the motherboard chipset. - Investigated bnc#578252. It turned out to be a fallout of the changed tmpfs type 'devtmpfs'. - What was reported as a strange X property bug turned out to be an issue with metacity in SLE-11. This is some feedback regarding our webpage from opensuse-marketing. Maybe we should include his ideas into the umbrella sprint? First, OBS is by far one of the best "features" of the SUSE community. No other distribution has a better system for finding and adding packages. But lets put ourselves into the shoes of a first time OpenSUSE user. After they finish the install, the likely first step is to open Firefox which takes them to the default OpenSUSE site (http://www.opensuse.org/en/) where they are presented with 3 prominent options: 1) Get it "download openSUSE or find aditional software" 2) Discover it "Learn more about openSUSE..." 3) Create it "Build packages for all major Linux distributions..." "Get it" takes you to http://software.opensuse.org/ for downloading openSUSE but, in the main menu on the left, the "Get Software" link just loops back to itself. To be fair, there is another box on the left for "Software" and one on the right for "Package Search", but I personally feel the most prominent thing you should see in the centre of the "get software" site is a choice between downloading the full distro, and searching software. And the existing main menu could use some reworking: * Get Software * Wiki * Build Software * User Directory * Features * News * Forums * Shop Suggestion: * Get it ( -> download OpenSUSE with prominent software search) * Buy it (-> Shop (BTW, this needs a serious overhaul)) * Discover it ( -> Wiki ) * Build it ( -> OBS ) ( I like the "IT" theme and it should be maintained as much as possible ) ---- Delete these from the menu: * User Directory: Fits better as a link from the Wiki. * Features: this does not go to a feature list as expected, rather it goes to openFate. * Forums: Fits better as a link from the Wiki. * News (Already on the main site and can also be under Discover it) ---- Comments on the specific sites: Default openSUSE site: add "Buy it" under "Get it" to match the main menu suggested above. OBS: Package searching is buried as a link in the 3rd paragraph. "Build it" should link directly to package search. Shop: Is it only me or does anyone else find it odd that the only thing you CAN'T buy at "shop" is openSUSE?! And no North American sales or distribution?
