===== The output of ; funky@linux:~> ls -ld /tmp/.ICE-unix/ drwxrwxrwt 2 root root 328 2003-01-15 08:39 /tmp/.ICE-unix/
Should I delete this directory /tmp/.ICE-unix/ ?
strace kmail --nofork > /home/funky/kmail.txt but the file has zero bytes ?
Make that: strace kmail --nofork 2> /home/funky/kmail.txt or just strace kmail --nofork -- Richard -- Dit bericht is verzonden met Webmail van Freeler. Ook snel en betrouwbaar toegang tot internet? Meld je aan op http://www.freeler.nl

I have mv /tmp/.ICE-unix to /tmp/.ICE-unix.old recreated /tmp/.ICE-unix chmod 777 /tmp/.ICE-unix no sticky bit there now... tried to look through the 88Mb file ;) but it was too large to find a failure ... Can you tell me what error I could grep for? When I restarted started kmail, a message 'Klaunch was unable to start DCOP' So I've restarted X & tried to run kmail but still it will not start I see it running in top at 94% cpu and killall -9 kmail... Try this. In an xterm, su to root and enter init 3. This will put you in a console on tty1. su to your user with a problem (IMPORTANT-DO NOT DO THIS AS ROOT). cd to /tmp. With my new understanding of the sticky bit on this directory, if you do a rm * as your normal user (the one with the problem), it should ONLY delete the files owned/writeable to that user in the /tmp directory. After this has been done, exit back to root, and enter init 5. This will start X and kdm. You can Ctrl-Alt-F1 to go back to the tty1 console and logout, then Alt-F7 to go back to the graphical login, and login, and try kmail again. If it still has problems, let us know. If it is something in /tmp, this should remove the problem. Your problem is not in /tmp, it is in your home directory. Try Jon's suggestion (rename or backup your kmailrc file). If that isn't it, look at your mailbox files. Compare with your new test user that works. You'll find it soon. :-)

See if KMail starts up. If it does, then the problem may well be there.
This app works ok under the new account ??? Which means it should theoretically be limited to a problem in the /home/funky/ directory tree somewhere.
Can I do a diff on two directories & files at the same time for file permissions, owners, filesizes, dates etc... to get to the bottom of this problem? You can do:
ls -ls directory1 >~/01 ls -ls directory2 >~/02 diff ~/01 ~/02 Should show differences [I am open to corrections here as I am not used to using diff, but somewhere in the dark recessess of my mind it is there ;o)] *fingers crossed*
