When I restarted started kmail, a message

Try this. In an xterm, su to root and enter init 3. This will put you in a console on tty1. su to your user with a problem (IMPORTANT-DO NOT DO THIS AS ROOT). cd to /tmp. With my new understanding of the sticky bit on this directory, if you do a rm * as your normal user (the one with the problem), it should ONLY delete the files owned/writeable to that user in the /tmp directory. After this has been done, exit back to root, and enter init 5. This will start X and kdm. You can Ctrl-Alt-F1 to go back to the tty1 console and logout, then Alt-F7 to go back to the graphical login, and login, and try kmail again. If it still has problems, let us know. If it is something in /tmp, this should remove the problem.
