[opensuse] Too much removed. Any help ?.
Hi. I would uninstall Gnome as I normally use KDE. But during that cleaning process, I got too much uninstalled. I'm aware, that I have uninstalled Yast, Sax2 and Zypper. And of course much more, that I'm not aware of at the present. How do I install those packages lacking now using the 11.0 DVD ?. I think this is the only way to do it, but I might me wrong in that. Many thanks in advance for any help. -- Med venlig hilsen / Best regards Erik Jakobsen eja@urbakken.dk Registered Linux user #114875 - http://counter.li.org -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Run the dvd and select update that will install your essential packages and you can control what else is installed too. Regards Dave P -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

First do: $ ls /media And paste it here. Maybe also the contents of /etc/fstab Another possibility is to do: $ mkdir /tmp/dvd-mount-point $ mount /dev/cdrom /tmp/dvd-mount-point And then repeat the above with /media/cdrom changed to /tmp/dvd-mount-point. -- Mads Martin Joergensen, http://mmj.dk "Why make things difficult, when it is possible to make them cryptic and totally illogical, with just a little bit more effort?" -- A. The next easiest step after using update to restore files is the system repair option on the installation dvd, this will automatically restore essential files that are missing. At what point do you receive the file not found message? Regards Dave P -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Either your kernel is gone or grub is not pointing to the right location. If you have the install dvd, you should be able to boot into the system. Iirc, if you boot off the disc, there should be an option to boot installed system either before installation or when you cancel install. You can reinstall the kernel and anything that has to do with yast2. If you'd rather not try to guess what needs to be installed, boot off the disc and select the repair installation option. Unfortunately there isn't a boot installed system on 11.0 dvd, the repair installed system option takes care of any critical packages that are missing. The only way to bypass the bootloader in 11.0 is to use kexec from the rescue disk. Yes I have tried the repair installed system several times. There is a bootloader problem, that I cannot solve. I know what you means by the rescue disk, that I can see, if I boot from the DVD. The quickest method to boot installed system is:- from rescue system mount / and /boot if you have a separate boot partition at /mnt ie. mount /dev/sdxx /mnt then execute this command :- kexec -l /mnt/boot/vmlinuz --initrd=/mnt/boot/initrd --command-line=root=/dev/sdxx Obviously the dev/sdxx xx is replaced with your actual partition and disk letter and number and the --command-line=

Hi Larry. Quite right it is. As I encountered the problem I thought I would wait for the new 11.1, and then have the HDD containing 11.0 temporarely connected in the computer, mount it, and then copy what's necessary. As there is only few days untill 11.1, I'll not install RC1. Thanks for your coments. One thing to say is, that doing that one doesn't learn about using the rescue on the DVD. True, but sometimes I just need to have my system back up and running. Example, my main desktop had an issue with the updater task/icon on KDE3. I probably could have fixed it, but after having another issue, I just wiped it. It installs in like 10 minutes on that machine(Celeron E1200 overclocked to 3.2Ghz). -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

You are most probably missing some other key yast packages or possibly ncurses and the best way to get them back is via the DVD installation system. Select update from the installation system and then from the details section of the package selection you can install your missing packages, the yast you enter in the installation system update is the same as the one you would normally use in your system. At this stage I would do things Larry's way and backup my home directories and do a clean install but if you have time and patience you could possibly get your system back again the hard way. Yes, you can. You boot the DVD, rescue system (manual or automatic) and type ctrl-alt-f1..f10 to switch to the text consoles. At least two of them are a bash prompt where you can type some commands, like the fdisk one. Another trick you may learn now is to have two installed partitions on your hard disk. If one Linux is hosed, you have another one you can use on emergencies and for repairs. It can be a small Linux, text only, or one with a small graphics desktop (not kde nor gnome). Or, you can have a small live distro on CD. It may be openSUSE, or something like knopix. There is also a "supergrub" ISO you can download and use to recover faulty grub installs. In any case, being a bit familiar with text mode Linux can be very useful for emergencies. - -- Cheers, Carlos E. I need a more detailed information to be able to do that, if it's possible having your assistance?. -- Med venlig hilsen / Best regards Erik Jakobsen eja@urbakken.dk Registered Linux user #114875 - http://counter.li.org -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I can boot now, but issues with yast2 still remains. Mads!. I cannot se any media nor in /media nor in /mnt. Can you help me here ?
First do:
$ ls /media
The /media has no content.
And paste it here. Maybe also the contents of /etc/fstab

Another possibility is to do:
$ mkdir /tmp/dvd-mount-point $ mount /dev/cdrom /tmp/dvd-mount-point
And then repeat the above with /media/cdrom changed to /tmp/dvd-mount-point.

No, the repeat part I was referring to, was the one where you install the missing rpm's directly from the commandline from the media. I wonder why I have the
Error 15: File not found
You should explain when and where you get that message. I can guess it is a grub message, when you try to boot. Then, on "info grub" you get the info: ] 15 : File not found ] This error is returned if the specified file name cannot be found, ] but everything else (like the disk/partition info) is OK. It probably means that the kernel image or the initrd image are not there; either they are not there (not installed), or the name is typed incorrectly in grub menu. Guessing again, grub menu is pointing to the last updated kernel image, whereas if you restored the kernel from the dvd, you have an older version. You have to edit /boot/grub/menu.lst, find the entry you use, something like: ###Don't change this comment - YaST2 identifier: Original name: linux### title openSUSE 11.1 - 2.6.27.7-4 root (hd0,7) kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.27.7-4-pae root=/dev/disk/by-label/160_test resume=/dev/disk/by-label/320_swap splash=silent showopts vga=0x317 initrd /initrd-2.6.27.7-4-pae replace (mutandis mutandi) /vmlinuz-2.6.27.7-4-pae with /vmlinuz, and /initrd-2.6.27.7-4-pae with /initrd. Not really...
Of course it can be done with RPM, but as there are so many dependencies.
Don't worry. It is just a question of patience. First install yast, using rpm commands (put in one line the rpm command with all the needed packages from the dvd), then tell yast to install whatever you think you need. You are not the first one that had to do that. Perhaps: cd to the directory in the dvd holding the yast packages, and try: rpm -i yast* If it says it needs something else, add it to the line. It is doable! However, the automatic rescue function of the install DVD should be able to do all that automatically. Did you try that?
Think I'll wait for the 11.1 version.

However, the automatic rescue function of the install DVD should be able to do all that automatically. Did you try that?
But there are errors, and after a rescue there's no news installed. Does the rescue do a logfile ?
Think I'll wait for the 11.1 version.
Whatever :-)

Hi Dave.
I have tried it, but there are errors during the job. Can I see a log.
If you select installation and then the choice update, you can select detailed software and it will put you into yast where you can select your missing packages for installation and the dependencies will be automatically taken care of. Hi Dave. I'm on my way, but there still remains issues. Yes, but it is a ramdisk, I think. Can't you copy to paper the errors you see and post them later? At least the first few errors. Knowing what it complains of, we should be better able to help... Don't worry. It is just a question of patience. First install yast, using rpm commands (put in one line the rpm command with all the needed packages from the dvd), then tell yast to install whatever you think you need. You are not the first one that had to do that.
Perhaps: cd to the directory in the dvd holding the yast packages, and try:
rpm -i yast*

It's on the DVD in suse/noarch. Purely out of curiosity, and since no-one has yet mentioned it, have you installed zypper? If you have, you should be able to use that to find out which packages you need to install by using: zypper ve and it will provide a list of packages that need to be removed or installed to fix broken dependencies. If you've left the DVD listed as a repository, have it install all the required dependencies. Just use: zypper in [list of packages required] and that will install the packages. You shouldn't need to list all the packages listed by the "zypper ve" command as zypper will add any packages as required to satisfy the dependencies. You should have only one "Main Update Repository". You can try: zypper lr -d | less -s which will tell you also the remote location of the repo.

I would go one step further. Remove ALL REPOS EXCEPT for the main OSS and NON-OSS repos initially.
Use:
removerepo (rr) [options]
Richard wrote:

Remove repository specified by alias, number or URI.
Note you can type 'zypper rr 1 2 3 4 ...' where the numbers are the numbers you obtained with 'zypper lr'
and represent all of the installed repos. You can then LATER add back repos such as Packman if you want/need them for anything.
Additionally, I would add my install cd as a repo. Usually it is a device: /dev/sr0 though it may be different on your machine. If push comes to shove, you can copy the contents of the CD to a local directory and use the path to that directory as a local repo. From then on, you won't have to have the CD in the drive in order to use it for new programs you may want to add. I do this in case the internet is unavailable and the OSS/NON-OSS repos can't be reached.
Once you have your system back to some sort of reasonable operation, you can resume using Yast2 if you prefer a GUI interface. In the meantime, Zypper requires much less overhead and will work even if Yast is not even on your machine as it only needs its' library and rpm (and maybe a couple of other support files) rether than the whole of KDE or GNOME required to support a GUI interface.
Richard
I see your point Richard. I will do that what you suggested me to do later on. Just no I have installed 11.1 RC1 on another HDD. Ok, then you have to remove "yast2-control-center-gnome" from the rpm command line. But it's better you install zypper instead, as others suggested, it will be easier. - -- Cheers, Carlos E. Perhaps: cd to the directory in the dvd holding the yast packages, and try:
rpm -i yast*
If it says it needs something else, add it to the line. It is doable!
Here is the last I have done:
rpm -i yast2*
As you can see below rpm -i yast2* will cause every yast function including gnome versions which is what you were trying to uninstall when you first had a problem.

Sorry for late reply, the easy way to solve your problem is a combination of the repair system and the installation system after booting the installation DVD. You could also use zypper, which is easier to install by the above method.execute :- rpm -i satsolver-tools* rpm -i libzypp* rpm -i zypper* If you get any dependency issues you must install the appropriate packages as well. Use the wild card * to prevent having to type in the version tags at the end of the package names. Once you have zypper installed execute :- zypper in yast2-qt-pkg and your yast2 software manager will be restored allowing easy installation of the rest of the missing software. Remember to check the installation summary to see what is being removed and installed and that there are some software packages that use gnome libraries so if you remove the library the package will be removed also. It is possible to have a system with almost no gnome though. Hope this fixes your problem. Try installing ncurses (command line yast) zypper in yast2-ncurses-pkg Then start it with yast2 --ncurses sw_single Regards Dave P -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

First, use zypper to trim your huge list of repositories to something manageable: probably only the OSS, Non-OSS, and Main update repos. Three. use "zypper removerepo" Then, run "zypper verify" and "zypper update". When that's is done, "zypper patterns" and install the yast patterns you need or want.

In that case, what you need to do is reinstall the missing packages. The easiest way is to make sure that you have the patterns "YaST System Administration" and "YaST Installation Packages" installed. Open YaST -> Software -> Software Management and then make sure those two patterns are enabled. Also, scroll down the packages listed and make sure that you haven't marked any as taboo, otherwise they will not be re-installed. Looking at the four pictures posted, you have a load of modules missing. The above should get most/all of them back but, if it doesn't, change the filter to "search", and make sure you're only "Name" is checked. Then enter "YaST" in the search box. This should produce a list of all the YaST modules. Go through the list in the package management window, read the description for each module, and select those that you want to include. As a starter, here's the list of (almost all) the YaST modules I have installed: yast2-add-on yast2-apparmor yast2-backup yast2-bootloader yast2-control-center yast2-control-center-qt yast2-country yast2-country-data yast2-firewall yast2-hardware-detection yast2-inetd yast2-installation yast2-instserver yast2-irda yast2-iscsi-client yast2-kerberos-client yast2-ldap yast2-ldap-client yast2-libyui yast2-mail yast2-metapackage-handler yast2-mouse yast2-ncurses yast2-ncurses-pkg yast2-network yast2-nfs-client yast2-nfs-common yast2-nis-client yast2-ntp-client yast2-online-update yast2-online-update-frontend yast2-packager yast2-pam yast2-perl-bindings yast2-phone-services yast2-pkg-bindings yast2-printer yast2-profile-manager yast2-qt yast2-qt-pkg yast2-registration yast2-repair yast2-restore yast2-runlevel yast2-samba-client yast2-scanner yast2-schema yast2-security yast2-slp yast2-sound yast2-storage yast2-storage-lib yast2-sudo yast2-support yast2-sysconfig yast2-theme-openSUSE yast2-trans-en_GB yast2-trans-stats yast2-transfer yast2-tune yast2-tv yast2-update yast2-users yast2-vm yast2-x11 yast2-xml yast2-ycp-ui-bindings Regards, David Bolt -- Team Acorn: http://www.distributed.net/ OGR-NG @ ~100Mnodes RC5-72 @ ~1Mkeys/s SUSE 10.1 32 | | openSUSE 10.3 32b | openSUSE 11.0 32b | openSUSE 10.2 64b | openSUSE 10.3 64b | openSUSE 11.0 64b RISC OS 3.6 | TOS 4.02 | openSUSE 10.3 PPC | RISC OS 3.11 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I assume you see that when trying to install that package. The usually solution is retry. If that fails, the package is bad in the repo you are using or being redirected to. Try another day, or try another repo. It would have to be reported on a bugzilla, I guess.
How do you make the yast content list above ?

In what you posted before, that's impossible. You run zypper in dry-run mode, which means do not modify anything. And then, you did:

so zypper was there. Are you telling me that you removed the "--dry-run", and went ahead without waiting?
About the removing and installing, notice what it says:
]The following NEW patches are going to be installed: ] PackageKit-139.noarch (Main Update Repository, maint-coord@suse.de) ] zypper-114.noarch (Main Update Repository, maint-coord@suse.de) ] yast2-ncurses-pkg-83.noarch (Main Update Repository, maint-coord@suse.de) ] libzypp-53.noarch (Main Update Repository, maint-coord@suse.de)

Both paragraphs contradict one another, but I understand it means it is going to do both things, which should result into an upgrade.
This is what I think it will do. I'm not fully sure, because your problems make me a bit paranoid.
Yes let's wait and see if somebody has the wise clue.
Right.
Work-a-round/possible-solution: download the zypper-114.noarch to disk, perform the above as previous detailed. If zypper is *not* replaced, rpm -i ./zypper-114.noarch*** and you are back in business. probably a good idea to include the yast2-ncurses package also, just in case, to provide the same recovery. -- Patrick Shanahan Plainfield, Indiana, USA HOG # US1244711 http://wahoo.no-ip.org Photo Album: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/gallery2 Registered Linux User #207535 @ http://counter.li.org -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

In what you posted before, that's impossible. You run zypper in dry-run mode, which means do not modify anything. And then, you did:
] dhcppc3:/media/SU1100.001/suse/i586 # rpm -q zypper ] zypper-0.11.6-4.1
so zypper was there. Are you telling me that you removed the "--dry-run", and went ahead without waiting?
About the removing and installing, notice what it says:
]The following NEW patches are going to be installed: ] PackageKit-139.noarch (Main Update Repository, maint-coord@suse.de) ] zypper-114.noarch (Main Update Repository, maint-coord@suse.de) ] yast2-ncurses-pkg-83.noarch (Main Update Repository, maint-coord@suse.de) ] libzypp-53.noarch (Main Update Repository, maint-coord@suse.de)
and later:
]The following packages are going to be REMOVED: ] zypper-0.11.6-4.1.i586 (@System, SUSE LINUX Products GmbH, Nuernberg, Germany) ] yast2-ncurses-pkg-2.16.13-4.1.i586 (@System, SUSE LINUX Products GmbH, Nuernberg, Germany)
Both paragraphs contradict one another, but I understand it means it is going to do both things, which should result into an upgrade.
This is what I think it will do. I'm not fully sure, because your problems make me a bit paranoid.
Yes let's wait and see if somebody has the wise clue.
Right.

Hello Patrick. Thanks for joining in here and for give me your help. From where can I download zypper-114.noarch ?
According to the information *you* posted previous which I quoted, it is in "Main Update Repository", but I don't see it there (http://software.opensuse.org/search). Exp: When you are going to perform an operation that causes you doubts, download the packages to disk that are affected so you have an avenue for recovery w/o much concern. Note: I am still running 10.1 and using SLED repos for maintenance because I have tooooo many personal configurations and server settings that it is a chore to continually update to the newest and bestest. I will install 11.1 in a few days or so as maintaining 10.1 is becoming too much. -- Patrick Shanahan Plainfield, Indiana, USA HOG # US1244711 http://wahoo.no-ip.org Photo Album: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/gallery2 Registered Linux User #207535 @ http://counter.li.org -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I /think/ it is going to remove one and install another. But I'm not fully sure... so lets wait till somebody else more familiar with zypper chimes in.
Me, I would go ahead, I could solve problems easily (I hope). But knowing the problems you have been through... you'd better wait.

Erik, Have you tried using the Update feature on the install disc? There is an option to remove unsupported packages, which will get you back to the state of a new install, but without overwriting your files. Also, if you do a new installation from the disc without formatting your drives, you'll be able to boot. The only downside I've found with doing that is that yast may be confused about whether some apps are installed, but everything works fine.
