when you are in the repair system you can press ctrl/alt/F2 to get a console and you can run fdisk -l from there. If you are happy that all of your system packages are restored you can try my method to boot from the rescue system. I am guessing your root partition is /dev/sda2 as your screen shot shows. 1) Boot into rescue system from DVD 2)mount /dev/sda2 /mnt 3)kexec -l /mnt/boot/vmlinuz --initrd=/mnt/boot/initrd --command-line=root=/dev/sda2 4)kexec -e Your kernel will now boot. Hello Dave.
Many thanks for your reply.
I can do what you have shown me to do. But no I'm not sure:
"all of your system packages are restored"
No not all packages are restored. If I try to run yast from the prompt I only get up the blue yast screen with no text but the Quit and Help.
But thanks to your sugestions I now have access to the system via my lan from my other computers.
Unfortunately I cannot see my 2 CD drives, but know they can be accessed as I have booted from the DVD 11.0.
/etc/fstab:
/dev/disk/by-id/scsi-SATA_WDC_WD800JB-00J_WD-WCAM9M475425-part1 swap swap defaults 0 0 /dev/disk/by-id/scsi-SATA_WDC_WD800JB-00J_WD-WCAM9M475425-part2 / ext3 acl,user_xattr 1 1 /dev/disk/by-id/scsi-SATA_WDC_WD800JB-00J_WD-WCAM9M475425-part3 /home ext3 acl,user_xattr 1 2 proc /proc proc defaults 0 0 sysfs /sys sysfs noauto 0 0 debugfs /sys/kernel/debug debugfs noauto 0 0 usbfs /proc/bus/usb usbfs noauto 0 0 devpts /dev/pts devpts mode=0620,gid=5 0 0
You are most probably missing some other key yast packages or possibly ncurses and the best way to get them back is via the DVD installation system. Select update from the installation system and then from the details section of the package selection you can install your missing packages, the yast you enter in the installation system update is the same as the one you would normally use in your system. At this stage I would do things Larry's way and backup my home directories and do a clean install but if you have time and patience you could possibly get your system back again the hard way.
