[Bug 1047852] New: knotify_libjack audio kcrash on pthread_key_create() at ../common/JackError.cpp:88
http://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1047852 Bug ID: 1047852 Summary: knotify_libjack audio kcrash on pthread_key_create() at ../common/JackError.cpp:88 Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE Distribution Version: Leap 42.2 Hardware: Other OS: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: KDE3 Assignee: anixx@opensuse.org Reporter: drankinatty@suddenlinkmail.com QA Contact: qa-bugs@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- Created attachment 731684 --> http://bugzilla.opensuse.org/attachment.cgi?id=731684&action=edit knotify_libjack wdebug kcrash file (the 6 is just the 6th one I saved) A knotify/libjack.so.0 crash will regularly occur once during a session. It may take a day or two for the bug to appear, but on access to sound theme sound (no one in particular, e.g. dialog-open, minimize, etc.) a kcrash report appears and the desktop sounds no longer play until you restart the desktop. This time it took 2 days 5:29 minutes under heavy use to occur. It is strangely random when it happens, but very consistent that it *will* happen. This is not new and has been around at least since 13.1 (it may go back to 11.4). I have experiences this on two separate laptops with 13.1 and Leap 42.2. (I really think it was there in 11.4, but I'm far too old to remember) I have attached a wdebug.kcrash that details the error. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

was assigned to me, but this problem happened in libjack, not KDE3. So changed assignee.

libjack0-1.9.12-lp151.3.3.1.x86_64 now is installed on my primary PC. It takes time for the no longer expected crash to occur....
I used to use xine as the audio backend in my kde3 days. Try executing this: jack_control start ; jack_metro -f 25 -b 30 and see if you can make a crash, you have to use ctrl c to exit jack_metro. Also we can test with zynaddsubfx and qjackctl. Execute zynaddsubfx from the command line than you need to start qjackctl from another console and then click the connect button. You should see zynaddsubfx in the left hand window, expand it and you will have out_1 and out_2 expand system in the right hand window you will have paybacks 1 and 2. Select out_1 and drag to playback_1 to connect, repeat with out_2. Now you should have sound from the keyboard of zynaddsubfx, play around and if you can't reproduce the crash you should consider switching to xine, I'm bugowner for xine. Please post any useful information. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

knotify has crashed apparently trying to start jackd I've looked for a phonon jack to run jack as a backend in kf5 but it doesn't appear to exist. In the days when I used kde3 I tried the jack audio backend with no success. Is jack the only available backend for kde3? -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

KDE3 also supports OSS (Open Sound System) (run "modprobe snd-pcm-oss" in order to work). -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

When, every boot? Once only? If not, can it be made automatic? Does anything else need to be done to prevent the crashing that still occurs as of KDE3 updates as of a month or so ago? KDE3 for 15.1 seems to be getting rebuilt every week or so. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

snd-pcm-oss is always required in order to use OSS. Run "echo snd-pcm-oss > /etc/modules-load.d/snd-pcm-oss.conf" to load it during boot. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

Created attachment 823676 [details] knotify.kcrash after snd-pcm-oss module loaded
Has no effect. Still crashes in the same manner, e.g.
$ cat /etc/modules-load.d/snd-pcm-oss.conf snd-pcm-oss
(having rebooted and restarted)
associated libjack kcrash attached.
Using OSS is not a solution, but a workaround. This means that you can use OSS instead of Jack in KDE3 (KDE3 control center -> Sound & Multimedia -> Sound System -> "Hardware" tab -> Audio Device). -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

Simply selecting "Open Sound System" and "Apply" didn't help. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

Still happening in 15.2. :(
I'm keeping this bug open until I get the time to build an old version of libxine which still has the arts backend, fortunately it's archived back to the end of 2004. Unfortunately jack is not compatible with arts anymore. You could maybe find someone upstream that maintains kdelibs3-arts who can integrate it with the latest jack -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.
