------- Comment #7 from jsmeix(a)novell.com 2006-09-08 08:00 MST -------
After talking to our resmgr maintainer even more,
I will try to implement the following (hopefully) final solution
and fall back to comment #6 if it is not possible:
The command
-----------------------------------------------------------------
for d in /usr/share/sane/descriptions/*.desc \
/usr/share/sane/descriptions-external/*.desc ; \
do grep ':usbid' $d ; \
done | sort -u
-----------------------------------------------------------------
results at the moment 515 different scanners with known USB IDs.
I will not skip /usr/share/sane/descriptions/unsupported.desc
because even for scanners which are known to be unsupported
there should be user access by default because the user might
find and install a third-party driver.
For USB scanners with known USB IDs
I will create a fixed HAL fdi file with all those entries
and add "scanner" to the list of strings in info.capabilities
For SCSI scanners which identify itself with "scsi.type = scanner"
I will add one fixed generic entry like item A) in comment #6
and add "scanner" to the list of strings in info.capabilities
For USB scanners with unknown USB IDs and/or
for SCSI scanners which identify itself not with "scsi.type = scanner"
I will let YaST write appropriate entries to
/etc/hal/fdi/policy/10osvendor/80-scanner.fdi
as described in comment #6 (but in contrast to what is described
in comment #6 I will add "scanner" to info.capabilities).

I just took the defaults - I thought it strange when the local setup page
(towards the end of installation) didn't show Sound.
I did very little during installation - apart from tweaking partitioning & GRUB
settings, it was otherwise pure default.
Is there any log file that will be useful? BTW: Machine is at work (as am I)
and I'm off for the weekend in 30 minutes...

Summary: We need simple graphics editor installed by default
Product: openSUSE 10.2
Version: Alpha 4
Platform: All
OS/Version: Other
Status: NEW
Severity: Enhancement
Priority: P5 - None
Component: Installation
AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening(a)forge.provo.novell.com
ReportedBy: al4321(a)gmail.com
QAContact: jsrain(a)novell.com
Hi all !
openSUSE 10.2 has no simple graphics editors installed by default.
simple graphics editor is a must for modern operating system, like Windows or
openSUSE, so that normal Home Users can start working just away, and no look
any further.
bottom line:
The best simple editor in the world is KDE "Kolourpaint" which blows both MS
Paint and KPaint out of the water, so I recommend you to add it as a default
choice for those people, who select KDE as a default Desktop Environment.

Miso, if you agree, I can take this one, too. We have the dialog (it's actually
the very first one you see after running yast2 lan module) as well as the help.
It's just a question of including into installation workflow.

yast2-network part: fixed in svn, will be in 2.13.64 build
yast2-theme part: fixed in 2.13.12
(Hope that executing YaST2.Second-Stage from running system is reasonably good
approximation of real installation behavior, as I'm too lazy to reboot my
computer ;-) )
