Summary: GDK applications are crashing
Product: openSUSE 10.2
Version: Alpha 4
Platform: IA64
OS/Version: SuSE Other
Status: NEW
Severity: Major
Priority: P5 - None
Component: GNOME
AssignedTo: bnc-team-gnome(a)forge.provo.novell.com
ReportedBy: emeric.maschino(a)gmail.com
QAContact: qa(a)suse.de
When clicking on Control center or Preferred applications from the GNOME
desktop, I get nothing. Starting control-center and application-browser from a
shell displays the following message on the console:
Gdk-CRITICAL **: gdk_display_get_name: assertion `GDK_IS_DISPLAY (display)'
failed
aborting...
It should be noted that the X mode isn't started at boot time although I'm in
runlevel 5. I must manually enter /opt/gnome/sbin/gdm as root to start up GDM.
Perhaps is there an initialization problem with the display preventing
GDK_IS_DISPLAY (display) to succeed?
If neede:
- gnome-main-menu-0.6.2-4
- control-center2-2.15.92-4
- gdk-pixbuf-0.22.0-95

I can't see it now either. Probably update to 2.15.93 solved it.

Summary: YaST ldap-client misses to add +-Line to /etc/shadow
Product: openSUSE 10.2
Version: Alpha 4
Platform: Other
OS/Version: Other
Status: NEW
Severity: Normal
Priority: P5 - None
Component: YaST2
AssignedTo: jsuchome(a)novell.com
ReportedBy: rhafer(a)novell.com
QAContact: jsrain(a)novell.com
CC: kukuk(a)novell.com
When setting up an LDAP client with YaST it should add the line:
+::::::::
to /etc/shadow. Otherwise the shadow functions like getspnam() will not work
against LDAP Users this will e.g. result in strange error messages from
pam_unix2.
NIS Clients might need the same. Thorsten?

------- Comment #10 from ms(a)novell.com 2006-09-08 08:25 MST -------
There is a difference between installation system and installed system.
1) Steffen in the installation system I call xmset to obtain the mouse
devices (it's a libhd related tool). The device comes from here:
if (hd->unix_dev_name) {
strcpy(data->device,hd->unix_dev_name);
}
has this changed so that I now get /dev/input/event
instead of /dev/input/mice ? If yes this is the reason for the installation
problem
2) In the installed system I assume this is fixed with the package wich
resides in /work/src/done. sax2 is now using the persistent names from
/dev/input

The reason is that /usr/X11R6 was, even before X.org itself moved from
/usr/X11R6 to /usr, officially "reserved for the X Window System, version 11
release 6, and related files":
http://www.pathname.com/fhs/pub/fhs-2.3.html#USRX11R6XWINDOWSYSTEMVERSION11…
acroread is neither part of nor specifically related to the X Window System,
version 11 release 6.
