2.4 -> 2.6 change: mount with disk not in drive semantics changed to something silly

In the Linux 2.4 packet-writing patches, if you tried mounting a packet-written CD when there was a disk in the drive but the drive was ejected, it pulled the drive in and mounted it. This is sane behaviour, I think. In 2.6, that's changed: the first time you try to mount, you get mount: /dev/pktcdvd/cdrw: can't read superblock and the *second* time it works. This, to put it mildly, inconsistent behaviour leads to insanity like the following kludge in my backup scripts: if ! mount /mnt/pcdrw 2>/dev/null && ! mount /mnt/pcdrw 2>/dev/null; then ... check and format the CD-RW ... fi I imagine this is a bug. Right? -- > ...Hires Root Beer... What we need these days is a stable, fast, anti-aliased root beer with dynamic shading. Not that you can let just anybody have root. --- John M. Ford

problems with pktsetup

hallo all, Using SuSE-9.2 I have read all stuff, here in the ML too. And beliefe me, I tried more than 50 hours to help me myself. Have my (new) self made Kernel 2.6.8-24.11-6 patched with packet-2.6.8.patch, compiled and installed. So there is packet-writimg in the kernel (Modul pktcdvd) The Modul udf is aktiv too. After this I compiled and install udftools-1.0.0b3.tar.gz and patched it with udftools-1.0.0b3.patch.bz2 The patch for pktsetup.c was done well. In /dev I found /dev/pktcdvd I did a mknod /dev/pktcdvd0 b 97 0 I wrote into /etc/modprobe.conf : alias block-major-97 pktcdvd lsmod shows the moduls udf and pktcdvd My cdrom = /dev/hdb, dvd (no burner) = /dev/hdc, and my cd-burner (cdrw - ATAPI) is /dev/hdd /media/cdrecorder is a link to /dev/hdd I could format a disc (cdrw) with "cdrwtool -d /dev/hdd -q" well (I have for MSWindows "InCD" too and could use the formated cdrw with InCD, all ok) adda:~ # pktsetup pktsetup /dev/pktcdvd0 /dev/cdrom setup device pktsetup -d /dev/pktcdvd0 tear down device adda:~ # And now my problems: here some experiments of me: adda:~ # pktsetup /dev/pktcdvd0 /cdrecorder open packet device: No such device or address adda:~ # pktsetup /pktcdvd0 /dev/hdd ioctl: Inappropriate ioctl for device adda:~ # pktsetup /dev/pktcdvd0 /dev/hdd open packet device: No such device or address adda:~ # pktsetup pktcdvd0 /dev/hdd ioctl: Inappropriate ioctl for device adda:~ # pktsetup /dev/pktcdvd0 /cdrom open packet device: No such device or address adda:~ # What is here wrong? I can't setup my writer. In /usr/src/linux/Documentation/cdrom/Packet-writing is written: Setup your writer: # pktsetup dev_name /dev/hdc (my=hdd) What is the correctly "dev_name"? I didn't find a sample for "dev_name". And you can see, with my experiments i had no luck. And without a correct setup for the writer I can't mount the writer too. Scripts I found couldn't help me (why?) I use udev and hotplug The /dev/hdd (cdrecorder) isn't mounted with subfs Tests in /etc/fstab didn't help. In /etc/init.d and /etc/default there are no inscriptions for udftools. Only I didn't install the packet "udf-0.9.8.tar.gz But I think, that's ok, or? My cdrecorder is no scsi-driver, its ide-cd But it can format, so I think there is no problem Also I'll tell you, that everytime by the experiments there was a formated udf-cd in the cdrecorder. Inappropriate ioctl for device

Hi, I'm trying to do some packet writing with my PIONEER DVR-106D dvd-rw but I'm running in the problem that it doesn't seem to be recognized by the kernel module (at least this is what I think). Could be my DVD burner blacklisted or inappropriate for packet writing? Or am I missing something? ciao, Francesco

Unusual mount behaviour for pktcdvd0

Hi, I am attempting to use packet-writing on CD-RW media with Gentoo GNU/Linux. The kernel is 2.6.10 and has the packet-writing patch already applied and I have enabled packet-writing and UDF support. I did need to upgrade my udev from 045 to 050 to fix a wait_for_sysfs error that was logged to syslog when attempting to access pktcdvd0. Also I had to modify my udev rules and permissions to relocate the control and packet device nodes into /dev/pktcdvd. The situation I have is that I can use cdrwtool to create a UDF filesystem on CD-RW without any sign of error. I can then assign the packet device using pktsetup and mount and unmount the packet device r/w as many times as I like. Once I have de-assigned the packet device, a subsequent attempt to assign it again works but I can then only mount the packet device in r/o mode. Mount reports it "can't read superblock" for an attempt to r/w mount the packet device and syslog reports a "No track?" error. It is possible to mount the device r/o and then remount it r/w though. I've never been able to create a UDF filesystem directly using mkudffs, which always reports "trying to change type of multiple extents". Has anyone observed a similar scenario and been able to find a solution that permits r/w mounting after de-assignment/re-assignment of the packet device?
