Drives that work with pktcdvd?

Are there any EIDE CD-RW drives that are known to work well with pktcdvd (for instance, do not corrupt the file system by writing to it)? Does anyone have any recommendations? Sony CRX175A Problems (File System Unreliability?)

I am using a Sony CD-RW CRX175A (ATAPI EIDE drive, 40x read, 24x CD-R, 10x CD-RW)under Windows and Linux. While under Linux, I have managed to successfully patch a 2.4.17 kernel against pktcdvd. However, when I attempt to write to the file system, the results are sporadic at best, and destructive most of the time. Sometimes it will prevent a file listing or access under the pretext that permission is denied (it isn't), will sometimes report that the disc is full when it isn't, and sometimes it will simply refuse to read or write under the premise of an I/O error. Usually, once I unmount the CD-RW, it is unreadable during a second attempt at mounting, or under Windows. I am at a loss as to what to do. I have attempted, as others have suggested, to load it with SCSI emulation, which only made the problem marginally better (if at all - it was not a scientific comparison). One possible problem is that pktcdvd may believe my drive is a 24 speed (it indicates a speed of '24' under the R/W entry in the log; this is correct for recording but not CD-RW writing). In addition, when attempting to format, cdrwtool tried to format it as a 12 speed. I corrected it to a 10 speed and finally an 8 speed, but to no avail. I also tried an older-style 4 speed disc, and it fared no better. I have tried discs formatted under both Windows (using B's Clip software) and under Linux (formatted under pktcdvd). In the Linux kernel configuration, I enabled UDF writing, which was labeled dangerous. I attempted writing to a CD without UDF writing, but could not get the kernel to acknowledge that it was a non-read-only system (i.e. I was able to mount it as rw, but any attempt at modifying the contents of the file system was firmly rebuked). Aside from the aforementioned reporting of the Write speed in R/W to be 24, there seems to be no erroneous activity in the log. Does anyone have any suggestions or possible solutions? I'd like to find out now, because I can still return the drive for another three weeks or so. Please send all replies to the list. [PATCH] FUA for Ricoh

I've been busy for a few months but I finally got around to making this neat. I've attached 2 patches. The first patch is a kernel patch to add a configuration item to allow you to set the Force Unit Access(FUA) bit for ide-cd write commands. The second patches cdrw tool to do the same thing as it does not use the kernel cdrom drivers. Although the kernel patch is for 2.4.13 I know it works on 2.4.10 & 2.4.17 and it should also work for any kernel after 2.4.7. It is not dependant on the packet writing patch and be applied before or after. This patch doesn't automatically force setting of FUA, you still need to re-configure the kernel and select the option before it will work. [ATA/IDE/MFM/RLL -> IDE, ATA and ATAPI block devices -> Enable Force Unit Access]. The UDF patch adds the command line option -F to cdrwtool to enable the use of FUA when it does its work preparing the disc. These patches are currently needed to make packet writing work for Ricoh - 6200A drives. At present I know of no other drives that need this. These patches are not the final solution. I can get the drive to work under scsi emulation, without this patch, for straight cd-r burning using cdrdao, so I'd like to think there should be a better solution than this. Partial success with Yamaha 2100S

Hi all, No, I'm not able to use packet writing on my Yamaha CRW2100S, but I'm getting closer. Problems: If I setup packet layer and mount a rewriteable (factory preformated empty disc), I have problems even umounting it, not talking about writing anything on it. With the latest patches and in 2.4.16, it won't hang the machine anymore but report several write errors and reset the SCSI bus. I've tried to skip the UDF layer and written the data directly to the RW: dd if=somefile of=/dev/pktcdvd0 bs=2048 this will write all the data from the file to the RW, and I can even unsetup, remove/replace media, setup and read the data back using dd if=/dev/pktcdvd0. But this still have two problems: 1. reports read errors at the very end of writing, the sector numbers seems to be just behind the last sector to be written by the dd. 2. it works for files of 50MB, but report errors very early if trying to write 200MB file (won't even write the first few MBs), BUT pretends it continue writting and the dd will feel happy at the end of writing. Do you have any idea what can be wrong? My config is:HP35470A AVA1505 -> Scanner AIC7xxx -> Writer Yamaha CRW2100S, Tape HP35470 Update: I was about to send the above message, but I wanted to add some logs and started one more 64MB write burst, but the machine have fallen hard (even no SysRQ helped). Fortunatelly I've just dumped my /proc/kcore as a pattern for burning, so a bit of grep revived the message. I'd try it again, but my gf is currently working on the machine and I don't like to freeze the machine again (she always says she don't have Linux for having to reboot twice a week :-) Nenik

Compatibility

I would know the instruction in cdrwtool to format a cd compatible whit direct cd. I have tried to whit quick setup (the -q option),but directcd said me that the cd is corrupted. Is my fault (my cd is corrupt) or the quick setup format (-q) don't create a cd compatible for write (for read it work).? Thanks Carlo
