Please read all the bug comments / clarifications :) this enhancement request is not about "out of disk space" alert; it is about reporting the total of bytes your going to install / remove. Now that total bytes is showed when the installation step is already started (really when starting to download the packages). Other package management tools show the disk variation: SMART and Synaptics, if I'm not wrong... Hi! As some of you've noticed, the bootloader configuration in openSUSE was not in best shape for a couple of releases. Therefore, we plan to drop the support for lilo bootloader from YaST (and thus installation) and leave grub as the only supported bootloader on i386 and x86_64 in openSUSE 11.1. The reason is that there are almost no technical advantages to keep both bootloaders and it makes a lot of sense to focus on a single solution and improve it. As part of this strategy, we also want to document bootloader deployment strategies that are supported by the YaST code and where the users should expect the code to work reliably. The change will mean: 1) YaST bootloader code for lilo will be dropped 2) YaST installation will offer to not install any bootloader, so an experienced user can use this to install lilo manually 3) kernel packages will be unable to adapt lilo configuration automatically, this needs to be done manually after installing a new kernel package Any feedback appreciated. Hi all! I'd like to inform you about a new feature in Yast in openSUSE-11.1-Alpha1. The feature allows you to configure role based access to yast. The current implementation is limited only to some yast functionality (the SCR part), e.g. it doesn't allow to install packages by a non-root user. WARNING: the DBus support is still in development state, it may be buggy or whatever else... I ask the brave people here to give it a try. See http://en.opensuse.org/YaST/DBus_Integration for more details. There is an example how to enable "time zone change" task for a non-root user. If you find any problem with the DBus integration report it to bugzilla.novell.com and assign the bug to me. Synergy on 64 bit systems has been found to crash java quite a bit. See http://forums.java.net/jive/thread.jspa?messageID=290594 A patch is available at https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/synergy/+bug/207057 The synergy project seems to be rather dead, are there any chances this patch could be applied on the version distributed with os? Gentle readers, please give me some hints for further investigation Im using openSUSE 10.3 and MozillaFirefox-3.0.1-1.1 Everytime, I invoke the the home page of the company Renault Deutschland (http://www.renault.de/) and I move the cursor over the menu (some JavaScript code), Firefox crashes with a segfault. I've invoked Firefox from gdb, but gdb complains about missing symbol tables, and allows operation with very poor information output. The MozillaFirefox-debuginfo package is installed, but I cannot find a symbol table for Firefox himself, only for the extensions. Starting from the time of the below Bugzilla action, I have been unable, logged in or not, with any browser on any OS to load any Bugzilla bug page, eventually getting an error 504 (gateway time-out) with each attempt to do so. Query pages, bug lists & other web sites still work. Is this happening to anyone else? Hi All, I'm adding some modules to initrd from suse cd-install (suse 11 and the modules aren't in main kernel tree) and usually I take the initrd from cd-install, open it by zcat |cpio and add or swap the necessary modules and scripts to boot my brand new hardware (not released also) and rebuild it on cd image. But I want to build the initrd in the right way (if there is), with the sources and etc.. I've searched the wiki and google but only finded references to create initrd to a already installed system (mkinitrd). Hello, Something to consider for 11.1. I just finished installing 11.0 in a situation, where / is on NFS. It went all right and completely smooth up to the point, where stage2 installation finished. Once YaST2 finished the last messages I have seen on the screen were: Shutting down network interfaces: eth0 Of course, the machine could not continue booting, as / was mounted on NFS. The same problem appears also when shutting down the machine. Could network interface shutdown be disabled if / on NFS is detected? Or is there any better solution for this problem? Hi, I'm currently working on huge changes in the YaST DNS Server Configuration, the most important features are: * New resource records: AAAA (IPv6), SRV, TXT * IPv6 reverse zones (possibly automatically generated) * More strict checking when creating or changing records * Checking whole zones for their completeness (NS, ...) * ... Is there anyone who would like to test these new features and maybe add their own ideas, comments, etc.? [opensuse-factory] May I make a small suggestion?

I don't know if any of you are aware of how very difficult it is to build gimp-gap-2.4.0 in the openSUSE environment? For a Debian environment, it didn't take too much, except compiling the latest libraries of GTK, Glib and Pango (etc) by hand ... and installing them one-by-one. This may be what is necessary on openSUSE, but, even still, the libraries that ship with the OS should be enough to compile it, right? I mean, it seems a little harder on openSUSE... For instance: the ./configure program will run and it will run completely, but there are several points during the make that it crashes, even after supposedly finding all of the dependencies that it deems necessary for the build. Libraries are not where they should be, header files are not where they should be. I've joined the comp.graphics.apps.gimp newsgroup on USENET, and the one person who replied simply said "it takes 5 hours of tedium, and I can't remember how I actually pulled it off." Well... considering GIMP's overall popularity, do you think someone back there could spend 5 hours creating a gimp-gap RPM to stick onto the 11.0 version? Just a thought. I would hate to think that my Windows environment could do something with a GTK+ based program that my Linux environment couldn't, without hassle. In the past, we at SUSE - and therefore now at Novell OPS BU - defined the severities in bugzilla in a way that is now different from nearly everybody else. We're standardizing now on the definitions given at http://en.opensuse.org/Bugs/Definitions. The severity definitions are now the same as in most other open source projects, so that we speak the same language and reduce confusion. The major changes we're doing are basically: * Severity Blocker means "Blocks development and/or testing work" * Severity Critical means "Crash, loss of data, corruption of data, severe memory leak" * We'd like to ask you to fill in the "Found by" field correctly, this will be "Beta-Customer" for openSUSE community members before a release and "Customer" if you file a bug after the release. * Novell will use internally both severity and priority for handling bug reports. We'd like you to use the changed severity definitions for every new bugreport that you are filing and also set the "Found by" field. Hi, Alpha1 is in the making, we're not yet ready what status we have as we had quite some build issues and so we lack any testable medium. So if everything is fine, we'll have it by thursday - if not, I let you know :) We changed the java we build the packages with to openjdk 1.6, which caused quite some problems. hi there, i just recently discovered that some older 10.2 box is completely out of sync as the updates/patches repository it got subscribed to during install time back then is only having patches from year 2007. this is total madness. somebody gotta keep this list clean and only distributing reliable and current mirrors. example is: <http://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/suse/update/10.2/repodata/> (current) <http://ftp.tu-ilmenau.de/Mirrors/ftp.suse.com/update/10.2/repodata/> (way outdated) i even re-ran the yast online-update configuration and the novell initscript or whatever it was called (/usr/bin/suse_register ?) re-subscribed me to this lagging mirror several times over again :( argh. :( p.s. i somewhere read about zypper updates also coming to older suse systems. is there a way to profit from newer zypper updates on these older suse/opensuse systems that maybe newer zypper builds feature a better and more intelligent handling of repositories and being in-/outof-sync with the main suse sources. there has to be some sane way of getting rid of unreliable downloadlocations. thanks. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe(a)opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help(a)opensuse.org

Hi, I just came across another example where the current *-lang packaging doesn't really work out. https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=410850 This shows that locales for packages which are not included in any bundle-lang-* package are either - not installed by default - installed while they probably don't provide the language the user installed for (depends just on the Requires settings of the main package). But the solver recognizes things like Provides: locale(BASEPACKAGE:AB;CD;...) So I wonder if the %lang_package macro could somehow be expanded to actually add such a Provides line automatically based on the packaged locales? Would that be possible and/or feasible? Hi Group, I was told this group is appropriate for this topic: As far as I can tell the wishlist entries don't explicitly/directly get addressed. Sometime ago I filed a wishlist request for cromfs and it would have been nice to know that its had least been: - read, - considered, - rejected/accepted. I was (pleasantly) surprised to discover cromfs in the openSUSE 11.0 base even though I was still seeing it in the wishlist. I discovered it in the OBS only because I went to start a OBS project.... I don't think you can rely on everyone who contributes to the wishlist, to also run OBS accounts/projects. Nonetheless its not obvious that cromfs' inclusion was due to it having been nominated in the wishlist - I probably got lucky, since it is still listed there. Is filing a bugzilla 'enhancement' to be preferred? Would I get any more feedback than received for a wishlist entry? Finally if the wishlist pages are the preferred mechanism it would seem that a category worth considering is 'security'. I thought that this was fixed, at this point, since SUN now has AMD 64 binaries. ... But I, for the life of me cannot figure out how to get JAVA up and running with openSUSE 11.0. I can't follow the steps for 10.3 because the layout of the file system has changed. Why can't I get this running? Hello, How does linuxrc detect the network card? As I ran into the problem, that there is a working Ethernet connection (even the kernel is downloaded by tftp), but linuxrc says: " *** No network device found. Load a network module first. " It is a custom built kernel for a not yet supported PPC board, and Ethernet works fine: [ 91.910110] eth0: fs_enet: 00:1e:59:7a:da:d1 [ 91.915144] FEC MII Bus: probed For example I can nfs mount a / partition (tested with 10.3 rescue system exported on NFS). Using a compiled in Ethernet driver worked fine for another board ( http://en.opensuse.org/MPC8610 ). [opensuse-factory] debug and shell consoles during installation

Hello, Is it a bug or a feature, that debug and shell consoled disappeared from the factory installer? There are no more shells started, and there is no debug output on F3 and F4. Right now I just see, that 'repo not found' (or something similar) in Linuxrc on F1, and can't check the real problem on the debug screens... [opensuse-factory] PXE Boot 11.0 GM impossible?

Has anybody tried to PXE boot using the kernel and initrd from 11.0 (OSS or box is the same)? My R50p (32bit) cannot boot. It loads the kernel-image and then freezes before fetching initrd. My Opterons (64bit) load the kernel image and then show funny garbled colored characters on the screen. Also frozen. This still works with 10.3 and worked with 11.0 Beta 3. We had that problem already in 10.0 (bug # 120877) and I think it had to do with some ACPI table at the end of the image. Coolo is on vacation this week and the next, so I'll try to help out a bit. I'm currently trying to get an internal Alpha0 out of the door. Basically this means getting all packages building again after some major changes like KDE update to 4.1 beta, GNOME updates, YaST changes and changes to libraries that broke other packages - which in the end lead to a inconsistent factory version. I hope to get this fixed today but with the build service down, it might take until next week. Other than that: I just announced the openSUSE 11.1 roadmap... Does that happen for anyone building their own Factory kernel? Can a more normal space consumption be made to happen by a mere mortal kernel building novice like myself? I use opensuse 11 x86_64 with kontact Version 1.3 from the opensuse 11 repo. Kontact use to work without this problem but since my workstation ip changed, i get a constant error: connection to the server <servername> was unexpectedly closed or timed out. It will be established automatically if possible" And in fact, some times it does get re-established but other times, kontact crashes. Some things i have done to try to fix this: -tried just kmail->same problem -delete existing account and recreated the email account->same problem -other email clients work fine -updated kontact from the opensuse repo->same problem -uninstall kontact/kmail and its dependencies. then delete all kmail/kontact folders. Reinstall kmail/kontact->same problem -reformat hdd and reinstall opensuse 11 with kontact->same problem So, i would like to now know where to look on the workstation for kontact error logs? /var/log/messages (i don't see anything in there)? I have also looked into the mail server logs for errors and found some java errors that happen around the same time of the error on the workstation. I restarted the mail server services and do not get that java error but still get the error on the workstation/kontact. I use zimbra 5.0.4 OSS as a mail server. I have asked over at their forums and they don't have an answer either. Is there anyone here who can help me find out how to fix this error? I really want to use kontact. I rec'd a call from a sys. admin. out int he mid-west. He was looking to replace RH on a LARGE number of desktops AND servers, until he tried to install Antivir which has a dependency of dazuko. Now, if you want to be the "top dog" in the corporate world, you DON'T make it impossible or nearly so to run Antivir on openSUSE 11.0 by not allowing dazuko to run, nor be able to compile it. It appears to me and to MANY others that only one security module is allowed to run on openSUSE 11.0 and that is it's own AppArmor. Now, is all this correct or not?! IF not, then why did openSUSE 11.0 ship with a defective dazuko?! Antivir may not be critical for me, but it sure is for businesses of mixed environment. Someone had to know that this was defective before release. Reading through http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=473128 looks like - Debian already packages openal-soft like the official openal, without -soft suffix. - Upstream really considers openal-soft to be the "official" implementaion, deprecating the one from http://www.openal.org/ that still points to the old implementation just because nobody has updated the web page. home:lnussel:ioquake3 already has a package for openal-soft. Python-xml is not included on the LiveCD thus inkscape lacks functionality. (2) Lzma compression for man pages Prusnak suggested to compress man pages with lzma algorithm to save more space on the user's disk. We made some investigation and result is not so profitable: only 2% of disk space allocated to man pages. (3) Package puppet available in Build Service Anicka put the puppet package into Build Service repo home:anicka:puppet. You can test it. (4) The improvements in the Scout Mvyskocil works on various features and improvements in scout code. The scout currently has a python index files and a module. The code was rewritten to produce more flexibility, because the experimental B-DUS interface needs a some changes in code. The output system is now more flexible and the initial support for unittests helps with a found and fix of the bug in a Database class, which comes from the old prototype code. There's also (a Czech) blogpost about scout published in http://www.abclinuxu.cz/blog/miblog/2008/6/scout-aneb-prohledavame-distribu… with more than 450 hits. And mvyskocil also prepared a demonstration usage of scout. When the Java application ends with NoClassDefFoundError/ClassNotFoundException, the wrapper script detects the name of the class, use a scout to find the name of required package, call zypper to install them and tries to re-run the application. [opensuse-factory] Samba latest not found

I went to http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/ looking for latest Samba, and don't see it there or in the main oss repo. Shouldn't there be one in repositories? I need to check for a fix for a bug in cifs-mount 3.2.0-21 and earlier that is supposed to have been put in the latest version. -- "Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry." php timezone library is causing my updater to barf. ... it says there's an unresolved dependency. As I can tell, there was a major PHP update that was pushed, recently ... What sort of "community" distribution is this? I submit bugreports but then when I search the bugzilla they do not appear. Why is that?
