My harddisk layout, if it matters: - openSUSE 12.2 on /dev/sda (one partition /dev/sda1 over the whole harddisk) - Windows XP on /dev/sdb1, linux swap partition on /dev/sdb2 I have attached my YaST logs after changing system to localtime. In such case, it is strongly recommended to use UTC, and to click Cancel. If you want to keep local time, you must adjust the CMOS clock twice the year because of Day Light Saving switches. Only include this text during installation if Windows is truly not present. Simply don't perform this test again, and don't tell me if Windows is present. * The pop-up informs me that use of local time is broken I have used local time for many years on a variety of distros, including openSUSE. I have never had any issues with the time not being updated as a result of daylight savings. I have never had backups fail, nor has the sky fallen in on me. Either this is a regression and local time is now a broken feature, in which case please fix it ASAP, or the text in the pop-up is incorrect and is frightening the poor user for no reason, in which case, delete this text. The outcome of fixing both of these issues, is that a pop-up is no longer needed. The user can choose either UTC or local time, and suffer no ill effects. The check for Windows is not needed. Aaaaand... we simply revert all changes back to 12.1 when everything worked :) The only issue that I have ever had with dual-booting and CMOS set to local time, is that Windows and openSUSE both update for daylight savings, and I then have to fix it manually. But Windows has an option not to update for daylight savings, and if you put this option in openSUSE as well, it will solve the issue. You simply assign this role to the dominant OS and the other won't touch it. It seems to me that somebody decided to arbitrarily disable updating in openSUSE without giving the user an option to keep it the way it has been for more than a decade. This is correct and hopefully it prevent people from using local time in CMOS as the natural correct way is UTC as this is the only way to become the kernel to have the correct time reference standard which is UTC. It also avoids that the user has to correct twice a year the CMOS clock at Daylight Saving Time switch (Sommer/Winterzeit) *before* the kernel has booted the system and *before* the file system check and mount command do touch the root file system to avoid wrong time stamps [1]. The remainig problem is that in initrd (the initial ramdisk) we do not know if or if not the DST switch has been done for the CMOS clock by the Windows[tm] OS or the user its self. As this is not documented by MircoSoft[tm] how this is done and where to find the information about handled DST there is no way to use this information in the initial ram disk initrd. The internal system clock of a Linux kernel has to be in UTC otherwise the local time of the user space (including the user space of the initrd) is not correct. The local time of the user space is given by the /etc/localtime which provides the DST rules as well as the timezone in reference to the system clock. This can be overwritten with the environment variable TZ that is that it is possible for a specific user to choose its own timezone on a server even if accessed over e.g. internet around this planet. AFAICR it was Ted Ts'o[1] which scold on the distributors that they warp the kernels system clock after mounting the root file system. Otherwise the warping the kernels system clockhad never been moved into the initial ram disk.
