Dr Fink, having CMOS set to local time has worked well for me for many years,
with the time automatically updating with daylight savings. I don't know which
software is responsible for this, but it's been working just fine. I have not
relied on NTP for all of this time, but I have used other distros.
I guess I can't say for sure how well it works if the time-zone changes with
the computer off, since mine are usually running. But in a critical application
such as an email server, it will be running. The kernel will write a new value
to CMOS after the update.
Users have never had to correct the CMOS before booting after a time-zone
change. The consequences are trivial, are they not?
At a minimum, the pop-up should be changed to reflect the reality that local
time works just fine. (Unless somebody has purposefully broken it, which seems
to be the implication of the message.)
