Source rpms for sane 1.0.8 in 8.1 Pro
I was looking for source rpms (spms) for sane 1.0.8 using Yast2, but couldn't find anything, just a reference to it in the technical description of the rpm. I need to recompile the sane-backends to include sm3600.o support for my scanner. I don't believe it is compiled in by the default source included from http://mostang.com . When reading your post, I remembered that I had a sane-backends RPM lying around, but that I hadn't created a new one in a while. So, realizing that you could use an update RPM, I made one. Sane backends 1.0.9 is the newest version, not 1.0.8 (released October 24), so that's what I made an RPM of. https://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=28610 All drivers are included. If you decide to use it, tell me how it goes. If you don't, tell me why not. Thank ahead of time. On Sunday 10 November 2002 20:33, Jonathan Cowherd wrote:

While installing suse8.1 the os found the scanner but not the Epson Perfection 2400 Photo. It did have the 2450 listed which I believe is the preceding model. I chose the 2450 but I don't think it accepted my choice. Epson says it does not support linux! 1. How can I find out what the os has used for the scanner, if anything? 2. Is there a way to update the scanner database to include the 2400? 3. If the above does not work should I force the use of the 2450 and if yes, How? thanks

Hi Serge,
I assume you are right with the assumption of the preceding model. I am
resending my message to the list about how I set up the Epson 1660,
which shows the same 'problem' - it is the successor to the well-known
1650, and it is unknown to default SuSE 8.1
SINCE .. these questions arise from time to time, wouldn't it be great
to have a newer version of sane (1.0.9 should be out by now, 8.1 ships
with 1.0.8) and an update to YaST2-config-scanner via YOU ???!??!??
Cheers .... Wolfi

Hi, I forgot one thing. Since you are not using a 1660 but a 2400, the product ID (here it is 0x11e) will differ! The vendor, of course, remains Epson (0x4b8). You can find that out using usbview. These were the steps which finally made my Epson work with SuSE 8.1 and, even more important, continue working after a reboot:-)
- Include 'options scanner product=0x11e vendor=0x4b8' in /etc/modules.conf - Uncomment 'epson' (only epson) in /etc/sane.d/dll.conf - Include 'usb /dev/usb/scanner0' in /etc/sane.d/epson.conf; NOTE: usb /dev/usbscanner did NOT work; - Include 'usb-ohci' in INITRD_MODULES in /etc/sysconfig/kernel; and run mk_initrd NOTE: including also 'scanner' did NOT help - Add an entry to the hotplug configuration file /etc/hotplug/usb.distmap; (i.e. copy a line -which indeed stretches over three lines- and change the values to 0x11e and 0x4b8 - according to first point) - Add 'modprobe scanner' in /etc/init.d/boot.local
I followed your suggestions, but I got a bad problem: a "kernel panic" because there must have been something wrong when usb-ohci was included. /etc/sysconfig/kernel looked like this: INITRD_MODULES="reiserfs" INITRD_MODULES="usb-ohci" I have SUSE 8.0 (not 8.1). Any suggestions ? Thanks, Riccardo,Italy.

What you had would panic the kernel if your root filesystem is a reiserfs. Thanks, anyway I found that everything works fine even without changing /etc/sysconfig/kernel.

Hi Riccardo, First of all, usb-ohci is not necessarily correct. It might be usb-uhci as well, this depends on your mobo chipset. I can't tell you more about that, both of my boxen got usb-ohci. Next, I never wrote the initrd_modules in two lines, so I'm not sure if this is all right. Just write in one line: INITRD_MODULES="reiserfs usb-ohci" Then, run mk_initrd after that. 8.0 defaults to lilo as a bootloader, so you have to run lilo as well (both as root on the command line). Hi Serge, Here is a link for some Epson software and drivers on the Linux platform: http://www.epkowa.co.jp/english/linux_e/linux.html Look around.....looks like Epson really wants to support Linux fully. I have an Epson Perfection 1250 Photo scanner and (with the help of Iscan from Epson) it works perfectly on Suse 8.1 including the options of slide and negative scanning. After upgrading Suse I noticed there wasn't an option for the 1250 but there was for the 1650. After finishing the yast setup of the scanner I installed the iscan.rpm. With 8.0 I could only use the iscan software with a support program like gimp (as a plugin). With 8.1 iscan runs nicely on it's own but you can still create a link into gimps plugin directory and use it that way. Hope something here helps you out. Ken

Also, have a look at http://www.hamrick.com. They make a Linux scanner software that fully supports almost every scanner there is. Especially Epsons. -- JAY VOLLMER JVOLLMER@VISI.COM TEXT REFS DOUBLEPLUSUNGOOD SELFTHINK VERGING CRIMETHINK IGNORE FULLWISE

Hi Jay, I had to check it out. Pro's - recognized the epson scanner immediately upon running the executable - scans transparencies - offers many tweaking options within the program Con's - Is unusable unless you fork over $40.00 due to pasting '$40.00' all over whatever you scan - Is totally closed source (unlike epson's version where only the drivers are closed) Looks real good if you buy it. With Epson offering their Iscan at a reasonable price (nothing) and it offers the same thing or more (with gimp) than vuescan for linux doesn't make a whole lot of fiscal sense. Thanks for the info, Ken
