Originally installed a test 15.3 system as a simple server, no graphics environment. It's been maybe a decade since I had to install and configure an X system from scratch. Added X11 via Yast. Accepted the required additions. systemctl start xdm.service fails. Due to "dependencies". Did find a few services it needed that were not installed by YAST. Still failed to start. Eventually I found it was failing due to "not configured". Suse docs seem to say it does "not normally need to be configured" and should just work. I've so far found no configuration utilities to assist. At least none seem to be installed. Any assistance is appreciated. joe a.

You need to install one of the graphical environment patterns. Perhaps "patterns-base-x11", maybe "patterns-base-basic_desktop" too.

Run "startx" on a console, and paste here the result. If you need it, you could run "gpm" service to get mouse support in text mode. -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. (from 15.3 x86_64 at Telcontar)

I got "systemctl start xdm.service" to start after installing many more x items via YAST. No idea which specific thing it was that "fixed it". startx is unhappy. Below is the screen output. If xdm.service is running, and you get a graphical session, then you do not need to try startx. Copying the config file is a bad idea. In fact, the default is no config file (talking of /etc/X11/xorg.conf). If you copied it, you should delete it.

Yes, it is a VM. I got things working to the point I could do a VNC session from my PC. However, I want to emulate another system where I can VNC into a port other than the default (standard) VNC port. Although I have it (apparently) working (no errors on starting that configuration) I cannot access it remotely as I can other servers. It appears it is due to the chosen port being blocked by firewall. In "the new order" of things I do not see a way to allow "custom" ports to pass via the firewall control in YAST, only the "known" services are selectable. And so it is. I am using the text version from a terminal and changed the colors. I need to work on getting better contrast. Regarding "off list replies", sorry, but that may happen from time to time. I haunt a number of lists and the default "reply" address seems to vary on a per list basis. Here I have to do "reply all" then remember to delete the "personal" address. One can forget to intervene. Not meant to be annoying, but, there it is. joe a.

This is true. Depends on various things.

Dunno which MUA you use (can't be bothered looking) but for me it works here correctly by default and for other lists I set my MUA to do the appropriate thing when I hit reply-list.

That approach is the fast way to my bit-bucket :) i.e. you may not get many replies if you persist in being impolite.

I was not attempting at all to be impolite. Just stating a fact to explain what I expect to be a RARE transgression. But it seems YOU are attempting to "make a statement" that seems rather confrontational, instantly judgmental and frankly, rude. but it is annoying and on you to control your chosen mail client. perhaps you need to make *specific* configurations for mail lists you find it necessary to "reply all". my client recognizes configured mail lists and replies to the list and it is on me to *make* it do otherwise.

I consider the matter addressed and closed. your "consideration" is certainly appreciated. but you haven't closed the issue, ie: not resolved. ps: the "hard returns" you include in your replies certainly make the difficult to read and quote and trying to trim it is ridiculous. -- (paka)Patrick Shanahan Plainfield, Indiana, USA @ptilopteri http://en.opensuse.org openSUSE Community Member facebook/ptilopteri Photos: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/piwigo paka @ IRCnet oftc What sort of day was it? . . . Here I have to do "reply all" then remember to delete the "personal" address. One can forget to intervene.
Dunno which MUA you use (can't be bothered looking) but for me it works here correctly by default and for other lists I set my MUA to do the appropriate thing when I hit reply-list. Does your MUA not consolidate duplicate deliveries based on Message-ID? Mine doesn't, being fairly ancient, so I've hacked a delivery script that does it for me. And users@lists.opensuse.org is well-behaved in that respect. But all MUAs really should, since SMTP has a notorious timing error that can cause multiple deliveries even to a single address. -- Bob Rogers http://www.rgrjr.com/

I dunno. Never gave it any thought. I use Fetchmail to bring mail in and hand it to a postfix/spamassassin/clamav bodge up and then to my ancient and proprietary system. I do not deliberately mess with any addresses that lists related. joe a.

Is there a way to add "custom ports" via YAST or is it limited to "known port"?
I used firewallctl before, but it is gone in 15.3
I have not tried the yast module in 15.3 yet, let me see.
Yes, if you click on the zone, you have a tab for services and another for ports.
And so it is. I am using the text version from a terminal and changed the colors. I need to work on getting better contrast.
Ah, I have not tried the text interface of this yast module
Regarding "off list replies", sorry, but that may happen from time to time. I haunt a number of lists and the default "reply" address seems to vary on a per list basis. Here I have to do "reply all" then remember to delete the "personal" address. One can forget to intervene.
Not meant to be annoying, but, there it is.
I know. There is an easy way, but not all mail client programs support it; Thunderbird does: I get a button that says "Reply to list". Me, I don't care if you occasionally reply to all and forget removing the direct reply ;-) -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. (from 15.3 x86_64 at Telcontar)

Originally installed a test 15.3 system as a simple server, no graphics environment. It's been maybe a decade since I had to install and configure an X system from scratch.
You need to install one of the graphical environment patterns. Perhaps "patterns-base-x11", maybe "patterns-base-basic_desktop" too.
Added X11 via Yast. Accepted the required additions.
systemctl start xdm.service fails. Due to "dependencies". Did find a few services it needed that were not installed by YAST.
Still failed to start.
Eventually I found it was failing due to "not configured". Suse docs seem to say it does "not normally need to be configured"
That's because the X server by default no longer uses xorg.conf. It has the smarts to detect the devices. There are xorg.conf segments in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/, but the commands are all commented out, i.e., these are for overrides only.
and should just work.
I've so far found no configuration utilities to assist. At least none seem to be installed. Any assistance is appreciated. Run "startx" on a console, and paste here the result.
If you need it, you could run "gpm" service to get mouse support in text mode.

Carlos E. R. (from 15.3 x86_64 at Telcontar) I got "systemctl start xdm.service" to start after installing many more x items via YAST. No idea which specific thing it was that "fixed it".
startx is unhappy. Below is the screen output. I suspect I still need to run a setup/config for this specific machine, as the config file I copied from another is old and has bad keywords. I've not found one as yet.
This could be the problem. X will use the xorg.conf file, if there is one. The error below indicates that X is using an xorg.conf file in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/. It should not be there. Especially if you copied it from another machine.
