Did anyone already try ADSL with SuSE Linux? Or know what is required? According to what I've heard, the Danish telecom will install an ADSL box that talks ATM, so there has to be an ATM card in the Linux box. The german Telecom is also planning to introduce ADSL here in Germany. Unfortunately these devices are running "PPP over Ethernet", which is currently not supported by Linux :(

Are you sure about this? Requiring an ATM card would be a serious barrier for most users, since ATM is not very common in this area.

I would think so. The german ADSL box has a RJ-45 connector, as used by ethernet cards. ADSL works with Linux. I haven't tried it with SuSE, but I do know of people that have gotten it to work. I've been wanting to get it and myself. Here is a site I found while researching: <A HREF="http://metalab.unc.edu/LDP/HOWTO/mini/ADSL.html"><A HREF="http://metalab.unc.edu/LDP/HOWTO/mini/ADSL.html</A">http://metalab.unc.edu/LDP/HOWTO/mini/ADSL.html</A</A>> Here in the states, what usually transpires is a technician is sent to your house to setup the machine (install a NIC if you need one, setup the xDSL modem and such). There were reports on a local newsgroup about how some technicians would refuse to setup ADSL on a Linux box and even how the support people would refuse to continue talking to anyone who said they were running Linux at home. They were requiring people to run Windows or they would not sell them service. The company doing this has gotten into a big mess with Linux users bombarding them and complaining to the Better Business Bureau, etc. (And the temp. fix was to setup a Win machine, let them install it and then disconnect everything and hook it up to the Linux box: all you need is their DNS entries, etc. and the modem they supply plugs into your NIC.) Good luck and I hope the HOWTO offers some info. you can use. ulysses@firinn.org "You've got to understand their market has always been the Windows space, where you're actually doing people a favor by charging them money for things, because that's the only way to keep from confusing them. Well, I'm a network know-nothing, but I'm trying. SuSE's yast didn't work for me when I ran the DHCP client instal because it asked me IP addresses that I have no knowledge of, or what to put in the entry boxes. But, I'll get it sooner or later, or know why I can't... -- To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e Check out the SuSE-FAQ at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/"><A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A">http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A</A>> and the archive at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html"><A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A">http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A</A>>
I've been using CVS in a small scale but I have some questions. Maybe there is a nice "A little more advanced intro" than just how to use the command line interface? Somebody mentioned to me that you can't diff binary files. But they can be stored in CVS. How are they stored - CVS stores a file as a main file with diff's to the former versions. Well, more important is what GUI's are available for CVS and do they support all the options of the CLI? I'm interested in Linux only GUI's as well as portable solutions (Web based eg) or GUI's for other OS'es. What happens if there are two persons who change the same file and checks them in.? As I know, the second person checking in will have the possibility to accept both his changes and the other changes? How does this work with the CLI? With the different GUI's? How do I create different branches of a developemnt tree and how do I merge them again? -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/
