[opensuse-support] Fonts quality after update to libfreetype6 2.10 in Leap 15.1?
Anyone noticed the difference? There are forum posts and I was hit by this issue as well. To me it looks certainly worse and I was not able to get the same look with libfreetype6 2.10 and I had with 2.9. I attached two screenshots to https://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1172148 of the same terminal content using two different library versions. If anyone has suggestion how to get the same result with 2.10 as I had with 2.9 I am grateful. I never configured anythjing explicitly, it is default Xfce installation without any customization. I do not actually know how to customize fonts (or, better said, I cannot predict what effect changing individual parameters would have). For now I locked libfreetype6, but with 15.2 not far away ... Interesting that I do not see the same effect in TW, so it could be something specific to Leap (may be some other libraries that do not work correctly with new libfreetype6). -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-support+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-support+owner@opensuse.org

I have last libfreetype6 version on my TW but it is coming by another repository (see below) I'm using XFCE and I've not noticed worse fonts display so far. marco@linux-turion64:~> rpm -qi libfreetype il pacchetto libfreetype non è stato installato marco@linux-turion64:~> rpm -qi libfreetype6 Name : libfreetype6 Version : 2.10.2 Release : 174.2 Architecture: x86_64 Install Date: ven 15 mag 2020, 10:10:38 Group : System/Libraries Size : 1241721 License : SUSE-Freetype OR GPL-2.0-or-later Signature : DSA/SHA1, mer 13 mag 2020, 13:09:59, Key ID f4cce1f4d15ee595 Source RPM : freetype2-2.10.2-174.2.src.rpm Build Date : mer 13 mag 2020, 13:09:29 Build Host : build70 Vendor : obs://build.opensuse.org/M17N URL : https://www.freetype.org Summary : A TrueType Font Library Description : This library features TrueType fonts for open source projects. It looks like sub-pixel artefacts on a Trinitron screen. That is, the 2.10 image shows vertically-coloured bars at the edges, whereas the 2.9 is completely black-and-white. I may be off base with my diagnosis, and I have no idea what causes it or how to fix it, but then I didn't charge anything for my thoughts either :) Best of luck! -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-support+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-support+owner@opensuse.org

Looks awful. I have only seen such behaviour in Java.
I never configured anythjing explicitly, it is default Xfce installation without any customization.
Have you any Qt applications to check? ``` ftview -l 3 16 /usr/share/fonts/truetype/DejaVuSansMono.ttf ``` Does this looks like color mess too? Try your font size/file (I'm not sure I've selected right ones). What this `xrdb -q | grep Xft` shows? Do you have any `~/.fonts.conf*` files/dirs?

Also, TW currently has 2.10.2, not 2.10.1. -- Kind regards, Mykola Krachkovsky -- Найкращі побажання, Микола Крачковський

I know 'it works fine here' is never much help but 'it works fine here'. I have no apparent weirdness in fonts and I don't notice any change in appearance from previous version. It looks like you aren't using subpixel anti-aliasing. You have grey only anti-aliasing on screenshot. -- Kind regards, Mykola Krachkovsky -- Найкращі побажання, Микола Крачковський

Aha. You are correct. (1.jpg). SUB-PIXEL ORDER was set to NONE as defaulted. I had not changed it. If I change the order from NONE to RGB, I do get the same problem as Andrei (though it doesn't look quite as severe). (1.png) Ralph

Default for subpixel-order on Xfce is "rgb".

Yes, it appears that freetype 2.9 ignored this setting and 2.10 started to respect it. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-support+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-support+owner@opensuse.org

Actually it defaults to "rgb" *also* on GNOME, the difference being that GSD xsettings plugin does not set Xft property unless "aliasing" is set to "rgba". Default for "aliasing" on GNOME is "grayscale". That is the reason I have not observed this issue on GNOME TW with *default* settings. Changing "aliasing" to "rgba" immediately resulted in the same problem. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-support+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-support+owner@opensuse.org

I'm looking at the photos and I don't see what's the difference? If I zoom in FF to 150% size it seems that one is a bit grey and the other a bit "blacker". It also seems to have coloured edges (looking at the 'N' in 'CNI') I'm also using XFCE with mostly defaults. Like you I don't know what to adjust. But I do not notice anything. I'm looking at the xfce terminal, which is configured to use "monospace regular 10". I took a screenshot and zoomed, but seems my fonts are rendered differently from yours. On the terminal itself they look ok. cer@Telcontar:~> rpm -qi libfreetype6 Name : libfreetype6 Version : 2.10.1 Release : lp151.4.3.1 Architecture: x86_64 -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. FTR: changing subpixel order from "RGB" to "None" in Xfce settings fixed fonts. Default was RGB. Why 2.9 worked and 2.10 not I do not know. But such change during stable maintenance update qualifies as regression. https://bugzilla.suse.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1172022 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-support+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-support+owner@opensuse.org
