Modern SSD supports the TRIM functionality. This functionality delays costly erase operation to speed up performance ; these erase operations are then executed by batch (this is SSD equivalent to defragmentation). SSD can only run at their full potential if this functionality is also supported by kernel and/or userland on the OS. Sadly TRIM support by kernel is not optimal yet. Erase operation are not launched automaticaly and this impacts overall SSD performance. Knowing what percentage of the progress is completed would be useful. I don't think we want some other type of indicator (e.g. how much time left) because there's too many variables. But a percentage should be fairly straightforward. We know how many packages are to be downloaded/installed and how many are completed so far. Use Case: In many cases, having the trackpad (which is usually ill-placed where your hands are supposed to rest) causes the typist to accidentally brush against it and cause typing errors. This is also a problem for some people with accessibility needs who require a different mouse and the trackpad can cause problems. Control Center offers an option to disable the trackpad in GNOME. (Not sure about KDE) but this is a problem if you do not always attach your mouse to your laptop. Then you have a disabled trackpad the next time you boot up. So it's not a very good workaround to this problem. Business case (Partner benefit): openSUSE.org: It would enhance the user experience. The rationale is that we are not sure the consequence about integration an Linux boot into an existing Windows setup. About consideration may not be necessary as ESP is defined in UEFI specification as common places for OS loaders, which differentiate by their own paths. There's no concept that ESP is specific to OS and be exclusive access from it. That would also lead to several issues as two ESP is confusing in general to the firmware and OS tools as they would assume only one single ESP as valid. Here are some of the failure case illustrated. 1. Modify (or repair) Windows boot configuration (BCD) on such system, two system partitions make Windows quite unhappy. It completely ruined boot configuration until hiding (by changing partition type) the one created by SUSE. 2. Boot loader config may be separated from one another as they're potentially placed in different ESP. It then proceeds to the bootsplash screen of openSUSE that we're all familiar with. This is elegantly supressed under Ubuntu through a patch called quiet.diff. Majority of sounds in it are too long (default login/logout sounds, anyone?) and they do sound very old-fashioned (plain piano) while desktop itself is the most advanced available. I propose that we adopt some of the other, more modern sounding open licence sound schemes around to fix this issue. My personal favourite from OpenDesktop.org is Feather sound set, fail.wmv omitted completely, incoming_call.wmv cut in half with Audacity and used as login sound and finally opening.wav used as logout. http://opendesktop.org/content/show.php/Feather+Sound+Set?content=90916 I welcome every suggestion into this discussion. This is now possible for 12.1 by 1 line change to zypp.conf. Since Online Update was first introduced (SuSE 7.1?) it replaced the running kernel by default, which can lead to problems booting. For a while multiversion kernel has been supported by libzypp (1 line edit in zypp.conf). The drawback with multiversion was manual deletion required of unwanted kernel packages (see http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse-kernel/2011-07/msg00056.html) Now in Factory 12.1 M3 Michel Marek has included & announced - kernel package retention options (see http://lizards.opensuse.org/2011/07/14/improved-kernel-package-retention-in…) The default is sane, to preserve the Lastest & Running Kernels. So lets use it and make 12.1 kernel updates safer for all, and by default do the right thing! Use Case: End user upgrades kernel to Tumbleweed and it fails to boot. With kernel package retention, the running kernel was saved and recovery is simply a matter of choosing the "good" kernel from GRUB menu. Business case (Partner benefit): openSUSE.org: To reduce support caused by kernel upgrade "accidents". To encourage safer testing of Kernel Team "stable" & "HEAD" kernels. This is annoying and painful. What's also annoying is that with 'flat-volumes = yes' the master volume is changed to the loudest individual stream. If a rogue application should choose to up the volume, my ears get fried (headphones !) Personally I think the purpose of having a master volume slider is to limit the max volume to avoid this kind of crap, which is totally nullified by 'flat-volumes = yes' ! Proposal: use 'flat-volumes = no' as the default in '/etc/pulse/daemon.conf'. I think the user is clever enough to handle the volume sliders himself. And only because Vista or W7 fiddles with the master volume in this _sick_ way, we don't need that as well.
