For thos unaware of Eucalyptus please see their homepage (http://www.eucalyptus.com/) , and for those that are too lazy to do that - Eucalyptus is an Open Source alternative to Amazon's EC2 Cloud computing offering. This is the very product that Ubuntu are using for their " Ubuntu Enterprise Cloud (http://www.ubuntu.com/products/whatisubuntu/serveredition/cloud/UEC) ". I am not advocating a "jump on the bandwagon" or "keeping up with the jones'" attitude. I am however advocating empowering our distribution and community with the necessary tools to stay ahead of the pack. I can also see several instances where the openSUSE project could potentially benifit from implementing our own cloud - it's no secret that there are some infrastructure constraints, and going down the Utility/Grid/Cloud/$Current_Buzz_Word computing may help things. For those that question whether there is a demand for it, I will admit there may not be a huge demand at the moment. The key thing is if we can market it right (in co-operation with Eucalyptus) we can get a much bigger uptake on both products - even our darling SLE cousin can join in the fun ;-) -- openSUSE Feature: https://features.opensuse.org/306439

Feature added by: Martin Schlander (cb400f) Feature #305664, revision 1, last change by Title: Server CD openSUSE-11.2: Unconfirmed Priority Requester: Desirable Requested by: Martin Schlander (cb400f) Description: Providing an official openSUSE server cd - with some often used server software - and perhaps a lightweight window manager like icewm or similar - would be a great thing for a number of reasons. - openSUSE is generally considered a desktop centric distribution, providing a server cd would do a heck of a lot to highligt the excellent (home-)server qualities of openSUSE. - The few people that realize that the openSUSE DVD/netinstall actually offers text mode/server installation, are often discouraged by needing to download a full DVD, or do troublesome and slow http/ftp installation. - Server users are generally more technical people, it would be beneficial to attract more of these to the openSUSE project. - More people using openSUSE on home servers would likely have spill-over effects on SLES sales. - An openSUSE server cd, would be an excellent response to Ubuntu server edition and Microsoft Home Server. -- openSUSE Feature: https://features.opensuse.org/?rm=feature_show&id=305664

Same concept as MSI packages for Windows but exploiting the One Click Install concept of openSUSE (and therefore inheriting the simplicity, code and security. Basically a compressed file which includes a repository inside, plus one click install information, and a script to trigger the oneclickinstall handler with the data as payload in the script. Therefore is a collection of rpms that can be installed detailed description is here http://en.opensuse.org/OSI There is already a prototype working. Example script: http://dl.getdropbox.com/u/363315/MozillaFirefox.osi This requires some extra features in one click install and other pieces * ability to force OneClick to add the repo (the one inside the compressed file) Additionally I see other features: * ability to suggest an update repo for the installed bundle * support from build service to generate bundles * easy way to generate them locally Out of scope but interesting: * Ablity to trigger a YaST workflow (its own control.xml?) It's sometimes due to the quality of the initial implementation; other times, the feature itself isn't appealing to large subset of the userbase. Examples of this type of features include compiz, beagle and pulseaudio. Given that features which generate a lot of controversies are desktop related as they are the most visible and that as a distro openSUSE wants to ship and experiment with new features, having an easy and unified way to opt in and out of controversial features would resolve a lot of griefs without harming test coverage too much. I suggest installing new features by default and ask whether the user wants to opt in and out of those features from ggreeter. It wouldn't add another step while still providing choices upfront. A big advantage is the ability to parse PAC (Proxy AutoConfiguration) without the need for this in every application. Simply linking against libproxy with it's very simple API (3 API calls, 2 without parameters) is enugh to have the advantage of no longer needing to 'guess' what proxy to use. What is now: - You can set in yast / proxy a general proxy to be used (http://foo.proxy.com:1234) This is bascially put into http_proxy envvar. In gnome you can set user proxy configuration as: - Use System Proxy (as configured in yast) - Use proxy configuration (static, same options as in yast) - Use automatic proxy configuration script Yast lacks the option to specify a PAC script on system wide level. This is only possible in the user sessions configuration. This made sense as most applications don't know how to handle pac files anyway. But with libroxy, this hurdle can be taken away from every single application and can thus be offered. The major problem to support this is that the wpa_supplicant is in /usr/sbin; it seems also to be difficult to move it to /sbin because of all the libs the wpa_supplicant is using. What would be required, is to extent the "supported_on_localfs" function to check this and start the interface in remotefs flow when 802.1x is enabled.
