[Bug 773058] New: non-existent floppy drive enabled in BIOS causes hang while searching for partitions
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=773058 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=773058#c0 Summary: non-existent floppy drive enabled in BIOS causes hang while searching for partitions Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 12.2 Version: RC 1 Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Installation AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: mrmazda@earthlink.net QAContact: jsrain@suse.com Found By: --- Blocker: --- Created an attachment (id=499941) --> (http://bugzilla.novell.com/attachment.cgi?id=499941) y2logs from same system but with floppy disabled in BIOS To reproduce: 1-ensure no floppy device is present, or at least disable it physically 2-enable floppy in BIOS 3-try to install Actual results: 1-probing partitions fails to pass 60% 2-tty4 is flooded with floppy access errors Expected results: 1-installation proceeds without trying to access non-existent floppy drive Comment: A full BIOS reset (dead CMOS battery replaced, intentional, or other) will typically enable a floppy controller regardless whether a floppy drive is present. This typically will produce no apparent errors during a normal POST process, so the user won't be prompted to go into BIOS to disable it if there is not one present. Installation shouldn't be prevented in such configurations. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

There have been quite a few fixes going into floppy driver recently. Could those of you who are seeing this problem please retest with master KOTD?
(can be obtained from http://download.suse.de/ibs/Devel:/Kernel:/master/standard/x86_64/ )
and report whether you are still seeing the symptoms? Thanks.
1. I'm seeing this bug with the install system on the 12.2 DVD ISO image. This prevents me from updating from 12.1 to 12.2. 2. /!\ Address Not Found download.suse.de could not be found. I am at a loss to imagine how the problem described in comment 0 can possibly be tested by an ordinary non-programmer, non-OBS user by using KOTD.

The users must disabled the floppy diskette in the BIOS, resave the changes and log out so that they can restart their computer.
Usually this problem will disappear.
I have tried disabling floppies in the BIOS, and the result was that the computer wouldn't boot (i.e. for some reason I didn't see the messages normally issued by GRUB). -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

The comment 0 machine was not mine, [...]
Neither was it mine, but I reported a duplicate (bug 783131) about my machine. I acquired an openSUSE 12.2 DVD at FOSDEM but I haven't yet had the time (estimated at 2 consecutive days with nothing else important to do) to try booting it with the floppy disabled and see if I can get it to work. I'll report the results here as soon as there are any. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

So is there any indication of the last version that was properly working? I fail to see this information in the bugzillas.
If the information you need would be anywhere in y2logs, then Bugzilla probably has it. I've been leaving y2logs on my server for several years. Here's a list, probably all of which were attached to bugs here within hours of creation: Oct 7 2012 y2l-big31-122-64.tgz Feb 11 2012 y2l-big31-122M1.tgz Oct 7 2012 y2l-big41-122-64.tgz Feb 14 2013 y2l-big41-123RC.tgz Aug 5 00:27 y2l-big41-os131m3.tgz Feb 18 2013 y2l-d5000-os123rc1.tgz Jun 28 2012 y2l-gx150-122B2.tgz Aug 13 12:15 y2l-gx260-131m4.tgz Mar 20 2012 y2l-gx280-122M2.tgz * Sep 19 17:25 y2l-gx280-os131b1.tgz * Sep 6 21:44 y2l-gx28b-os131m4f.tgz * Oct 13 15:23 y2l-hs80e-os131rc1.tgz Jul 11 2011 y2l-kt400-674919.tgz Oct 11 13:45 y2l-kt400-os131rc1.tgz May 28 2012 y2l-kt880122m3.tgz Nov 15 2012 y2l-kt880-131m1.tgz Aug 24 2012 y2l-ss500-2later.tgz Aug 23 2012 y2l-ss500RAIDblaklst.tgz Aug 22 2012 y2l-ss500.tgz After each y2l- is hostname (except hs80e & ss500, which are eSATA device nicknames), then OS version. The three with * have * because gx280 originally had no floppy and gx28b originally did have a floppy, but I moved it from gx28b to gx280 at a point in time I do not remember. My older logs no longer saved locally would still be attachments here, in most if not all cases to bugs I created. So, I'm guessing what you need is here and it's just a matter of finding it. Most of my test systems have floppy drives, and every openSUSE release back through 10.0 is represented here by at least one installation somewhere. So if you provide some script or command needed to test for when something changed I can give identifying the regression version a try. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

FWIW, I can only try any patch for a binary if someone else creates a new binary for me to try.
I have built openSUSE 13.1 kernel RPM with the patch added, can be obtained here: http://labs.suse.cz/jikos/download/bug-773058/ I'd propose this way of testing it: - take a machine that exposes the problem - disable floppy in BIOS - install the system - enable floppy in BIOS - verify that yast2 partitioner now hangs when you run it - instal the patched kernel and reboot into it - verify that yas2 partitioner no longer hangs when you run it Thanks. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Try updating the kernel to 3.12 http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/Kernel:/stable/standard/
To what end? The only binaries I see there are rpms, no installation linux. I'm already running 3.12 on some 13.1 installations, and all 13.2 installations. As indicated in multiple comments here, I'm unable to reproduce the hang on any installed system. IOW and IIRC, only while running an installation kernel to perform an installation has this *ever* happened to me. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I don't think it makes too much sense to integrate it into already released products, as the install image will not be respun anyway.
This is really annoying. I've had a machine torn partway apart getting in my way for three days waiting on an installation linux I can test. Who cares that 13.1 was already released? What's so hard about providing a 13.2 installation linux someone can test? Is testing not necessary? January 31 http://download.opensuse.org/factory/repo/oss/boot/i386/loader/initrd is definitely no better.
From your comment #70 I understand that it will finally get out of its hang after half an hour. That is more than a non-forewarned user could be expected to wait, but once we know it, it's not really "forever" so it can be used — if nothing else avails.
Of course a shorter timeout, or even an option to manually bypass floppies, would be more satisfying IMHO. AFAIK I cannot afford to disable floppies completely in the BIOS: I once tried but then the (Legacy GRUB) bootloader wouldn't start. (Empty black screen instead of text messages saying "Please wait" and then "Loading stage 1.5".) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Please see comment#53 for workaround that doesn't involve twiddling with BIOS.
