We've always done it that way is not necessarily a good reason to continue to do so. What is it that you have against this? You don't have to download this if you don't want to, you can stick with the i586, x86_64, or whatever it is that you're using. I don't see anything awful in that, the mirrors will manage to handle these additional RPMs for sure, confused users problem can be solved if we only want to, so what's the real deal then ? It won't give anyone a significiant performance increase ? How do you know that? As for the problem number 2... Come on... How much space do these mirrors have? 300GB, 500, 2TB, more? How fast are their connections? 50Mb, 70Mb? Mirrors download this stuff only once, only when the distribution is officially released and that's it. There are alpha and beta releases, of course, but these shold remain as i586 optimized I think. You guys keep on repeating that using i686 will give no speed gain... Why would gcc devs implement this then? Why would they create CPU-specific optimization options and tweaks at all? Couldn't they simply stick with i386. This would make our lives easier... The reason you are seeing multiple patterns as updates is a combination of Bug 198379 and another issue that I just fixed in zmd. I hope you are kidding right ?. what you are asking does not make any sense. you how the tremendous amount of hassle that will generate ? 1.package manager issues 2. double space needed in the mirrors 3. a horde of clueless users asking what repo they should use. benefit : Probably none user measurable. It's like this: Right now we have http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/SL-10.1/inst-source/suse/ with following directoties: i586 i686 (but only few packages) noarch ppc ppc64 x86_64 And of course ISOs for the archs mentioned above (except i686 ). That's our current structure. Now, what I'm talking about is releasing this one more version of ISO and one more installation repository with stuff optimized for i686 (we might also consider using march=generic -mtune=generic insted i686 maybe?). That's it! This would let users to choose whether they want to download and use either i586, or the i686 optimized version.
