Then "zypper ps" displayed quite a number of processes using deleted files, including some which I thought would not be terminated by merely logging out of X11, so I rebooted. That's when the shit hit the fan. At the end of reboot (using systemd at runlevel 3, which are my usual defaults) there was no login prompt, and Ctrl-Alt-F2 to Ctrl-Alt-F6 would do nothing. Ctrl-Alt-F10 followed by Ctrl-Alt-F1 worked. After several seconds, six almost identical lines appeared on the console, saying (quoting from memory) that a failed dependency prevented Getty to start on tty1, and the same for tty2 to tty6. Each message had ABORT in red on the right side. Reboot was still possible by Ctrl-Alt-Del. Trying to reboot at runlevel 5 by appending a 5 to the kernel commandline in GRUB made the graphical login screen appear at the end of bootup, so I typed "root" as username, and the root password. The text console was displayed for a fraction of a second, and I was brought back to an empty graphical login screen. Ctrl-Alt-Del did nothing now, so I cycled the power switch. Finally when I selected "System V" in the F5 rolldown in GRUB everything went well. This can be seen in /usr/bin/latex2html, line 458: print "Warning: This system does not support generation of images\n" unless($NO_IMAGES); $NO_IMAGES = 1; This code is inserted when building the package, if no image conversion program for gif or png files can be found. Specificially, config/config.pl searches for pnmtopng and ppmtogif. Both of these commands are part of the netpbm package. What is weird is that latex2html.spec already contains the following line: BuildRequires: netpbm So the commands should have been found when the latex2html package was originally built. In fact, a simple rebuild of the package with no changes results in a latex2html version that can convert images. I propose that the latex2html package be rebuilt and re-uploaded so the functionality is available again. Image support was enabled in older versions of openSUSE (I specificially tested 11.2), so this is a regression. My /boot partition was full and mkinitd during the installation of the kernel image probably failed. I didn't see the message as I let the update run unattended and only saw the last lines of output from zypper dup, which seemed to suggest that everything went ok. When rebooting I got a "kernel panic: attempted to kill init". Fortunately I had another kernel installed and were able to boot, remove some old files from /boot and call mkinitrd again. Now the system boots fine. A full /boot partition is not that unlikely (the default partition layout suggests a rather small /boot and installing two testkernels is enough to fill it so that mkinitrd fails. Could zypper dup give a summary of errors that happened while installing all packages in the end of the upgrade process so that the user sees this error before rebooting?
