[Bug 808871] New: Cannot log in to either mingetty or X11 under systemd. OK under System V init.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=808871 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=808871#c0 Summary: Cannot log in to either mingetty or X11 under systemd. OK under System V init. Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 12.1 Version: Final Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: openSUSE 12.1 Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Basesystem AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: antoine.mechelynck@belgacom.net QAContact: qa-bugs@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:22.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/22.0 SeaMonkey/2.19a1 When I woke up this morning (CET) there were a number of online updates waiting for me on the openSUSE 12.1 Update-Test repo, so I dutifully let YaST apply them. Then "zypper ps" displayed quite a number of processes using deleted files, including some which I thought would not be terminated by merely logging out of X11, so I rebooted. That's when the shit hit the fan. At the end of reboot (using systemd at runlevel 3, which are my usual defaults) there was no login prompt, and Ctrl-Alt-F2 to Ctrl-Alt-F6 would do nothing. Ctrl-Alt-F10 followed by Ctrl-Alt-F1 worked. After several seconds, six almost identical lines appeared on the console, saying (quoting from memory) that a failed dependency prevented Getty to start on tty1, and the same for tty2 to tty6. Each message had ABORT in red on the right side. Reboot was still possible by Ctrl-Alt-Del. Trying to reboot at runlevel 5 by appending a 5 to the kernel commandline in GRUB made the graphical login screen appear at the end of bootup, so I typed "root" as username, and the root password. The text console was displayed for a fraction of a second, and I was brought back to an empty graphical login screen. Ctrl-Alt-Del did nothing now, so I cycled the power switch. Finally when I selected "System V" in the F5 rolldown in GRUB everything went well. Could you try to downgrade systemd and see if it fixes the issue ?
Downgraded to 37-3.14.1-x86_64. "No processes using deleted files found" which is normal since I'm currently running under Sys V init. Stay tuned to this station for more results after next boot, but not immediately since I have to go to town. Probably later today. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

could you attach ls -lR /etc/systemd/system and also try to boot with the "broken" systemd, with the following parameter on your kernel command line "systemd.log_level=debug systemd.log_target=kmsg" and attach dmesg output once you are logged. Also, "systemctl status getty@tty1.service" output would be helpful.
I'm pasting the directory listing below. The rest will come after I boot twice in succession, once under systemd on the broken system, where I expect not to be able to log in, and once again (still on the broken system since I won't have been able to run zypp or yast without logging in) but under sysvinit. /etc/systemd/system: total 4 lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 40 Nov 17 2011 dbus-org.freedesktop.Avahi.service -> /lib/systemd/system/avahi-daemon.service lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 36 Jan 16 2012 default.target -> /lib/systemd/system/runlevel3.target drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 152 Nov 17 2011 default.target.wants -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1457 Dec 14 2011 getty@.service drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 288 Dec 14 2011 getty.target.wants lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 9 Mar 20 00:43 klogd.service -> /dev/null drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 320 Nov 20 2011 multi-user.target.wants drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 104 Nov 17 2011 network.target.wants drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 112 Nov 17 2011 runlevel2.target.wants drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 152 Nov 17 2011 runlevel3.target.wants drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 152 Nov 17 2011 runlevel5.target.wants drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 88 Nov 17 2011 sockets.target.wants /etc/systemd/system/default.target.wants: total 0 lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 53 Nov 17 2011 systemd-readahead-collect.service -> /lib/systemd/system/systemd-readahead-collect.service lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 52 Nov 17 2011 systemd-readahead-replay.service -> /lib/systemd/system/systemd-readahead-replay.service /etc/systemd/system/getty.target.wants: total 4 -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1293 Dec 14 2011 getty@tty1.service lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 17 Dec 14 2011 getty@tty2.service -> ../getty@.service lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 17 Dec 14 2011 getty@tty3.service -> ../getty@.service lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 17 Dec 14 2011 getty@tty4.service -> ../getty@.service lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 17 Dec 14 2011 getty@tty5.service -> ../getty@.service lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 17 Dec 14 2011 getty@tty6.service -> ../getty@.service /etc/systemd/system/multi-user.target.wants: total 0 lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 33 Nov 17 2011 acpid.service -> /lib/systemd/system/acpid.service lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 40 Nov 17 2011 avahi-daemon.service -> /lib/systemd/system/avahi-daemon.service lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 32 Nov 17 2011 cron.service -> /lib/systemd/system/cron.service lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 37 Nov 17 2011 haveged.service -> ///lib/systemd/system/haveged.service lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 42 Nov 17 2011 NetworkManager.service -> /lib/systemd/system/NetworkManager.service lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 37 Nov 20 2011 postfix.service -> ///lib/systemd/system/postfix.service lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 36 Nov 17 2011 remote-fs.target -> /lib/systemd/system/remote-fs.target lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 34 Nov 17 2011 syslog.service -> /lib/systemd/system/syslog.service /etc/systemd/system/network.target.wants: total 0 lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 54 Nov 17 2011 NetworkManager-wait-online.service -> /lib/systemd/system/NetworkManager-wait-online.service /etc/systemd/system/runlevel2.target.wants: total 0 lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 33 Nov 17 2011 acpid.service -> /lib/systemd/system/acpid.service lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 32 Nov 17 2011 cron.service -> /lib/systemd/system/cron.service /etc/systemd/system/runlevel3.target.wants: total 0 lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 33 Nov 17 2011 acpid.service -> /lib/systemd/system/acpid.service lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 40 Nov 17 2011 avahi-daemon.service -> /lib/systemd/system/avahi-daemon.service lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 32 Nov 17 2011 cron.service -> /lib/systemd/system/cron.service /etc/systemd/system/runlevel5.target.wants: total 0 lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 33 Nov 17 2011 acpid.service -> /lib/systemd/system/acpid.service lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 40 Nov 17 2011 avahi-daemon.service -> /lib/systemd/system/avahi-daemon.service lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 32 Nov 17 2011 cron.service -> /lib/systemd/system/cron.service /etc/systemd/system/sockets.target.wants: total 0 lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 39 Nov 17 2011 avahi-daemon.socket -> /lib/systemd/system/avahi-daemon.socket -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

why do you have a file /etc/systemd/system/getty@.service and why /etc/systemd/system/getty.target.wants/getty@tty1.service is not a symlink ?
In order to avoid clearing the bootup screen at the end of bootup, see bug 731594 Here are the contents: ----- start getty@tty1.service ----- notice the --noclear argument to mingetty # This file is part of systemd. # # systemd is free software; you can redistribute it and/or modify it # under the terms of the GNU General Public License as published by # the Free Software Foundation; either version 2 of the License, or # (at your option) any later version. Could you try moving /etc/systemd/system/getty@.service away
this would break the tty2 to tty6 symlinks in getty.target.wants
and replacing /etc/systemd/system/getty.target.wants/getty@tty1.service by a symlink, similar to /usr/lib/systemd/system/getty@.service (same for other getty@tty?.service symlink in /etc/systemd/system/getty.target.wants but try first with only replacing the tty1 one).
There is no /usr/lib/systemd/system/. /usr/lib/systemd/ contains nothing else than a user/ subdirectory (and the usual . and .. hardlinks). -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

In that case, you need to resync your modified file with the changes make in the systemd update. I suggest you copy the original file from /lib/systemd/system/getty@.service to /etc/systemd/system/getty@.service and re-apply your changes there.
