After upgrading to 12.1, touchpad freezes time to time. It looks like that: if I don't use my touchpad for some time (around 10-30 seconds), my next fingers' move will not move the cursor, so I have to move fingers back and forth several times in order to make it work again. Note that this is happens randomly and is not easy to reproduce. Also, it's not graphics freezes - only cursor doesn't move. Before upgrade, under opensuse 11.4, all was working fine, so it's not a hardware issue. Reproducible: Sometimes Steps to Reproduce: 1. Don't move cursor for some time 2. Move fingers over touchpad or click 3. Also, despite the unclear connection to the kernel, I have classified this bug report accordingly because of the remaining syslog errors and described issues below and having completely force-updated all KDE files a couple times... Summary User Issues: KDE Desktop Apps and 3rd party integrated apps nearly completely non-functional. Apps not likely with deep KDE integration seem to run OK with only minor issues. KDE completely force-updated so unlikely the problem is with KDE Syslog errors report kernel related wireless device errors continuously May be related to systemd/systemvinit System History First installed as 11.1/KDE3, upgraded 11.1/KDE3 > 11.3/KDE4.1 > 12.1/KDE4.1 The first upgrades resulted in abosolutely zero issues, the upgrade from 11.3 > 12.1 resulted in at least systemd/sysvinit issues so sysvinit was retained. Throughout the system's lifetime, updates have been applied approximately weekly, not patching. Additional Healthchecks Ran FSCK and CHKDSK(from Windows on NTFS partitions) to verify and ensure problems are not related to file corruption and disk issues. Description of serious issues Although the system performed well after the upgrade to 12.1 approx April 2012, started on or about July1 (approx 1.5 month ago) serious issues began to appear. - First, Firefox appeared to slow, then gradually has become unusable, ccurrently freezing within seconds. Have also found same with other KDE integrated apps like Ksysinfo, Network Manager, Konqueror - ACPI issues(integrated with KDE Desktop), most noticeably currently cannot shutdown, logoff or sleep from syslevel 5. Functions possible in Syslevel 3 - File manager (Dolphin) gradually became unusable. Currently takes very long to load, once loaded works well. Note below improved when explicitly setting to systemvinit. - Slow access to KDE Base components, including KDE Wallet. Example: Logging in to a wireless AP can take 5 minutes or until it appears that KDE Wallet can provide WPA credentials. Example: As mentioned, Dolphin File Manager similar long wait time. Additonal: Was surprised to find systemd errors in syslog, upon closer inspection found both systemd <and> systemvinit installed simultaneously with neither declared default! and both accessible on bootup. When this system was first upgraded to 12.1, the choice was systemd <or> systemvinit, and installing the package to run one removed it as an option leaving only the other as an option on bootup. Could a "zypper up" on or about July1, 2012 have installed systemd components that screwed up my system's systemd/sysvinit "selector?" In any case, specifying "systemvinit" on bootup seems to have slightly improved issues (eg FF can now surf 3 websites before locking up) but is not a proper solution. Currently, the syslog "messages" only is reporting this error repeatedly (only a sample), I assume that this well reported type of issue on the Internet is affecting practically all network-related issues, possibly including Firefox. Less clear is whether it's related to system ACPI issues. Note that apps that aren't tightly integrated with KDE open fairly normally and function fully even if apps like FF are frozen, examples are Konsole, Deluge Bit Torrent Client, Chrome Browser In 3 days, I will be installing new on new hard drives on this system, so am unlikely to do any more troubleshooting on these issues. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Bootup (option to leave default or select systemvinit, see "details") 2. Login through KDE 3. Open Dolphin or Connect to an AP Actual Results: Extremely long wait times, over 5 minutes until the application responds Expected Results: Expected immediate response Final evaluation: Have rated this problem as "only" serious because there are generally workarounds to using workhorse apps like Firefox and Dolphin (eg Chrome and manipulating files from the CLI, I can get Network Manager to work eventually but I assume could use wpa_supplicant if in a hurry) but for anyone who relies on KDE Desktop apps, these problems would be devastating. My Lenovo 3000 G530 laptop had 3 ( 2 + 1 ) GBs of memory and I upgraded ram to 4 ( 2 + 2 ) gigs and it does not boot after then. - System boots to grub successfully. - installed kernels ( 3.5.x desktop/default/vanilla, 3.1.x desktop/default/vanilla ) computer resets in seconds. - failsafe kernels also reset the computer. - There is not any weird messages in screen before rebooting. - System boots normally with single module or any setup with 3 GBs in total. - I updated the BIOS to latest version. - I checked memory modules via memtest and no error reported. - My system has dual boot with Win7 64 Bit and it works perfectly. So I am absolutely sure that hardware is good. - Also failed to boot with; -- OpenSuSE 12.1 64 Bits Net Install CD -- OpenSuSE 10.2 64 Bits DVD - I tried to boot OpenSuSE 64 Bits CD/DVD's and my installed kernels with these options, but no success... -- acpi=off -- acpi=force -- pci=noacpi -- acpi=oldboot -- apm=off -- ide=nodma -- edd=on -- edd=off -- noapic -- nolapic - I have a large collection of dists, I successfully boot with; -- gentoo 64 Bits CD -- gentoo 32 Bits CD -- OpenSuSE 10.3 32 Bits DVD -- OpenSuSE 11.4 32 Bits DVD -- System Rescue CD 64 Bits -- System Rescue CD 32 Bits -- Ubuntu 11.4 64 Bits DVD I tried to identify the problem and diff Ubuntu kernel config with OpenSuSE kernel config. At the end; found a solution (attached kernel config diff file). After compiled some custom configured kernels i found that i could boot with these kernel options; CONFIG_ACPI_PROCESSOR=y (this one automatically sets CONTAINER and THERMAL to YES) CONFIG_ACPI_CONTAINER=y CONFIG_X86_ACPI_CPUFREQ=y CONFIG_THERMAL=y I also tried to add these kernel modules to initrd and made these tests; Test 1 - opensuse desktop kernel - reboots sysconfig -> initrd_modules = processor container acpi-cpufreq thermal_sys Test 2 - opensuse desktop kernel - reboots sysconfig -> initrd_modules = thermal processor fan container acpi-cpufreq thermal_sys Test 3 - opensuse desktop kernel - reboots sysconfig -> initrd_modules = processor fan container acpi-cpufreq thermal_sys Test 4 - opensuse desktop patched kernel - BOOTS & RUNS OK sysconfig -> initrd_modules = thermal processor fan And tried a semi-patch as; CONFIG_ACPI_PROCESSOR=y (this one automatically sets CONTAINER and THERMAL to YES) CONFIG_ACPI_CONTAINER=y CONFIG_X86_ACPI_CPUFREQ=M CONFIG_THERMAL=y Test 5 - opensuse desktop semi-patched kernel - BOOTS then REBOOTS after starting BOOT daemon sysconfig -> initrd_modules = thermal processor fan Test 6 - opensuse desktop semi-patched kernel - reboots sysconfig -> initrd_modules = thermal processor fan acpi-cpufreq IN SHORT; These settings works in both 3.1.X and 3.5.x kernels for me; CONFIG_ACPI_PROCESSOR=y (this one automatically sets CONTAINER and THERMAL to YES) CONFIG_ACPI_CONTAINER=y CONFIG_X86_ACPI_CPUFREQ=y CONFIG_THERMAL=y I read there are some people reporting problems like opensuse DVD not boots but Ubuntu DVD works etc.. And i think these are pretty safe flags and we should use these while building opensuse kernels. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Boot system with 4 GB ram 2. In the grub select any kernel (3.5.x desktop/default/vanilla, 3.1.x desktop/default/vanilla) 3. They both fail to resume from suspend to ram every time since kernel 3.5.0-35. They enter str correctly, but when waking them up they only come up with the following message repeating it endlessly: drm nouveau 0000:02:00:0 Failed to idle channel 1 drm nouveau 0000:02:00:0 0x2634 !=child: 0x00100002 drm nouveau 0000:02:00:0 FIFO - playlist update failed Both machines can be restarted by logging in on the console, that's showing the above error messages, and typing "systemctl reboot". Shutdown via Menu or "shutdown <-r|-h> now". Last messages on shutdown: [891.857439] rpc.startd[2786] caught signal 15, unregistering an exiting [891.919327] rpc.mountd[2776] caught signal 15, unregistering an exiting [892.120389] rpcbind[2154] terminating on signal. Restart with "rpcbind -w" If switching off or hard reset at this point, data are loss (like last KDE session settings). If pressing <Ctrl><Alt><Del> shutdown continues and system comes up again. Switchig off after the system shutdown before the system comes up again seems to be OK and without data loss. First message after <Ctrl><Alt><Del> is: sending SIGTERM to remaining processes Currently I have 5 boxes with 12.1 3 run OK (Intel I7 mobile 4GB, Intel e8500 8GB, Intel I3-2130 8GB) On 1 the error occures 2 times (AMD X2 240e 12GB) On 1 the error occures more than 95% of shutdowns (Intel I7-2700K 16GB) On both boxes, on which the error occures, is a linux software raid5 with volume manager running On the box with 95% failing shutdown the error occures directly after clean installation. Probably this is due to the "flush procedure" that from time to time is going to sync the filesystem on the flash device. But... how about the io/scheduler ?
