But how does i.e. gnome-terminal do it. It isn't s[g|u]id anything but updates [u|w]tmp. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1.start urxvt +ut 2.enter: who am i -or- last Actual Results: 3. see nothing (who) -or- no entry for the current shell (last) Expected Results: 4. see "who i am" -or- see an entry in the list of last log{ins,outs} do chgrp tty `which urxvt` 5. do chmod g+s `which urxvt` 5. start urxvt 6. This causes incorrect function of "su" and possibly other programs, as pam_env.so should only be called at 1st contact during the 'pam_auth' stage (it's correctly in common-auth). But putting it in session causes it to be called twice -- the second time, it doesn't have access to the entire authentication vector (includes remote host in common_auth, but apparently not in common_session). Anyway, the result is that su -p to preserve your environment no longer preserves either "REMOTEHOST" nor "DISPLAY"... for people logged in via "X", this is bad. Anyway -- it shouldn't be in common-session, since the remote-host in PAM, I believe, isn't not present then -- but it's also unnecessary, since anything put in the environment in common-auth is still in the environment in common-session, -- so no need to call it then (or there shouldn't be unless something isn't using pam correctly)... Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. install rpm's from 12.2, 12,3 and factory and look at /etc/pam.d/common-session 2. Notice it's not there in 12.2 (nor before) 3. As a result 'su -p' (and most other progs) call it twice. I don't know all the effects this can cause, but I do know it breaks documented 'su' behavior. Note -- because of this if someone is remotely logged in and uses su expecting it to preserve their remote display settings -- instead, their 'X' programs will display on the system's console -- possibly in front of someone else. Actual Results: broken su behavior Expected Results: normal behavior consistent with 12.2 and su's documented features. Note... because this is called for all security programs, the impact of this isn't immediately measurable. It may be zero (over the known problem with 'su'), or it may cause other programs to malfunction in undesirable ways. I have a notebook with a vertical resolution of 900 pixel and an external screen with a vertical resolution of 1200 pixel, logically arranged side by side. In the past, when using "Organize desktop by name", this would use the minimum of the two heights, leaving some space at the bottom of the larger screen. That's not ideal (ideally we'd use the full height of the respective screen), but works. Now, with openSUSE 12.3, it seems to use the maximum of the two heights? In any case, after using "Organize desktop by name", icons on the notebook screen are cut off. Looks like an off-by-one string copy. The sysfs attributes for this disk have the correct values: manufacturer:Seagate product:FreeAgentDesktop So I suspect a bug in some udev rule.
