Yet, I noticed it tries to install completely new software (something for monitor network in Python) -- such thing should not happen. AU is not advertisement channel, the only packages that should be shown are updates and their dependencies. Useful, not useful, it does not matter. However AU ends with state as it is frozen -- nothing happens, there is no message "update successful" / "update failed". Such interaction and feedback should not happen, how the user can tell a) the installation is in progress b) installation froze c) installation finished For unexperienced user this is very subtle difference (I mean, telling from UI). Please, either be consistent with Yast, and quit silently, or show summary. Personally I opt for both -- meaning, show system notification (!) AND at the same time quit, so user will be not bothered. However AU lacks dependency resolution, and in the effect for example I have now above 100 packages for update, but I cannot do this, because AU shows some conflict and that's it. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1.Setup LDAP client using Yast 2.Authenticate via LDAP. 3.Install nss_pam_ldapd via yast and accept to remove nss_ldap. 4.Configure /etc/nslcd.conf with your own settings Actual Results: Cannot now authenticate via LDAP. Expected Results: Transparent migration from nss_ldap to nss_pam_ldapd. The files in /etc/pam.d seem to lose all references to LDAP when Yast LDAP Client is set to not use LDAP. The solution is to overwrite /etc/pam.d with a copy from before you disable LDAP in Yast LDAP Client. Would it be possible for Yast to make the switch to nslcd and preserve the pam settings? Analysis: A closer look revealed that some dynamic libraries were corrupted. The corruption disappears, and I get correct file contents again after I drop caches using: echo 3 > /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches Other Info: The disk was tested using SMART's long test. No errors found. RAM was tested using memtest86+. Two successful passes. openSUSE 11.3 had been running flawlessly for many months on the same HW. All files were on the root partition (/dev/sda6). This is an ext3 filesystem, mounted like this: /dev/sda6 on / type ext3 (rw,relatime,errors=continue,user_xattr,acl,commit=15,barrier=1,data=writeback) The machine is an Intel Core Duo with 2GB RAM, i.e. a 32-bit machine with some high memory.
