Just before rebooting into 11.2 I inspect /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules and it is the same as it was before I started, for example (excluding comments): SUBSYSTEM=="net", DRIVERS=="?*", ATTRS{address}=="00:0c:6e:40:7e:25", KERNEL=="eth*", NAME="eth0" It reboots and everything is fine on most machines, but on about 10% of them eth0 does not come up; instead we get eth1. The most recent instance happened on a compute cluster node where we put some work into making them identical, and other such mishaps occurred on systems virtually identical to others that got upgraded without incident. To the above line a script appended this one: SUBSYSTEM=="net", ACTION=="add", DRIVERS=="?*", ATTR{address}=="00:0c:6e:40:7e:25", ATTR{type}=="1", KERNEL=="eth*", NAME="eth1" On a machine with multiple NICs, if there's a problem then each NIC will get a new line and name. On the machines that didn't have a problem a line similar to the above *replaced* the original, i.e. 'ACTION=="add"' and 'ATTR{type}=="1"' are inserted, plus the 10.3 comment "converted netiface rule..." is replaced by the new style that gives the PCI bus ID. (These machines had SuSE 10.1 on them before 10.3.) The comment in 70-persistent-net.rules says it was rewritten by /etc/sysconfig/network/scripts/convert_persistent_name_rules . From my cable modem provider I appearantly don't get one. I guess that some system network tool sets "(none)" as default hostname, although I have "linux.site" set in /etc/HOSTNAME (as can be also seen in YaST Network Settings. If I look into /etc/hosts it looks like this: 127.0.0.1 localhost .. 127.0.0.2 (none) which is fine for "(none)". I would expect "linux.site" to be offered as the system-wide hostname. Hasn't been "(none)" hardcoded in some network tool or script to be taken instead of the configurable default? The radeon module does not get loaded automatically during boot (see Bug 595653), but if I boot into runlevel 3 and modprobe radeon manually, KMS gets activated (switches automatically to native LCD resolution). If I start X after loading the module, the screen first gets corrupted (looks like some random memory content), and a few seconds later I see the KDE splash screen. So in general this works, but it is painfully slow and the GPU fan turns up. There are several other issues there as well. The detailed steps with their problems are: 1. Choose to perform an online update during system installation. 2. Problem: Yast software management shows up (instead of online update). Problem: There are no patches visible to deselect. The user is presented with a blank list. Essentially, the user is forced to update everything. Selecting "Installation summary" in a dropdown shows several packages (half of them related to package management, the other half is fetchmsfonts, poppler, manual, flash, etc...). Problem: Nowhere it says that only package management stack (plus a random selection of packages) is going to be updated now. 3. Upon clicking accept, after some packages are installed, the dialogs shows up: "Packages for package management were updated. Finishing and restarting now." Problem: This message is really unclear about what exactly is restarting, which could very well be the computer. 4. After that the software management shows up again (instead of online update). Problem: And again, there is no way to deselect the specific patches. 5. After everything is installed and the system is booted to KDE4, the online updater in the tray says that "fetchmsfonts" patch is going to be installed. However, the same patch (with the fonts) was installed during the very first update (together with the package management stack patches). Note sure if these require separate bug reports, it looks like a "one big issue" to me.
