I have a Dell Dimension 8400 upgraded to the latest bios (A09) and recently installed with with 4GB of matched HP DDR2 ram. On bootup system recognized 3.2gb of the memory. I installed the 2.6.29-6-PAE kernel however again only 3.2gb was recognized. I installed kernel source and kernel development tools and made sure to specify the 4gb option in memory (using make cloneconfig it had defaulted to the 64gb option) but again only 3.2gb was recognized. I'm uncertain whether this is a milestone 1 issue or a hardware issue with the Dimension 8400 but thought it should be mentioned. uname -a : Linux d8400 2.6.29-6-i530 #1 SMP PREEMPT Sun May 10 06:29:24 EDT 2009 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux free -m : d8400:~ # free -m total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 3293 1171 2121 0 288 643 -/+ buffers/cache: 239 3053 Swap: 2055 0 2055 I am available to run any command you think necessary. Asus M2N4-SLI NVidia 8 Gig of RAM 3 SATA drives 250Gig, 1TB, and 1TB This machine had this very install on it prior to Dolphin pooching up a delete and corrupting a partition. I had a 500+Gig /home and 900+Gig /books partition, but those might have originally been created with 64-bit Ubuntu. Clean wipe and re-install attempt has been hitting brick wall for days now. I ran every diagnostic Western Digital provides for those 1TB drives and they show no errors. Doesn't matter if I have RAID turned on or off. I can tell the install to create a partition > 150Gig and format it ext3, but when the format gets out beyond 150Gig the install hangs. Usually a hard lock with dead mouse and keyboard. I have identified the problem though. Nobody tested anything with the maximum configuration. I tried installing Ubuntu 9.10 64-bit and it installed on the first try. No such love with OpenSuSe. In an act of sheer frustration I took 4Gig out of the machine and put in the original 2Gig so I was back down to 6 Gig of RAM. I got past the format stage, but was still unable to install...but I was trying to install on one of the 1TB drives (where I was before). One last attempt, putting the root partition on the 250Gig drive and everything else (including swap) on the pair of TB drives got it all working. This is definitely an OpenSuSE bug. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1.Install 8Gig of RAM in a machine with this motherboard and several SATA drives 2. Try to run the installation procedure formatting partitions larger than 300Gig 3. Actual Results: Hang-o-ramma sometimes crash dump info on screen Expected Results: clean formated partitions with installation continuing. Ubuntu 9.10 64-bit able to cleanly format all partitions and install on this very setup. What works quite stable with openSuSE 10.3 and 11.0 does not work at all with 11.1. The strange behaviour can be summarized as follows: 1. After boot ls on the the partition (it is mounted on /back) works nicely as many times as you want 2. After an nfs mount "mount masina:/back /mnt" (masina happens to be the hostname of my notebook :-)) masina:/back is mounted on /mnt . ls /mnt works fine and lists all files and directories of masina:/back . As soon as one dose a ls /mnt/<name> where <name> is the name of a directory in masina:/back, ls is blocked. Even local "ls /back" on masina blocks and shutdown blocks when it tries to unmount /back. And even more strange: If one makes an "ls /back/<name>" on masina first then /mnt/<name> over nfs works, too, with every directory I tried. File access for files in such directories seems to be possible, too. However, anytime a "new" directory is accessed, ls and with that the whole vfat partition blocks. The behavior seems to be identical same when /back is mounted via nfs on masina or on a remote machine. However, because I need to reboot every time when the partition is blocked, you might understand that my willingness to find out all aspects of this was limited. If this bug would be resolved, openSuSE 11.1 would actually be a quite nice distro. I put this as part of "Kernel" because I am using the kernel-based nfs module. I did not want to go through the trouble to test an alternative nfs solution. I rather then continue to use 11.0 to mount my vfat partitions via nfs. Just for completeness I provide the line in /etc/fstab for /back /dev/disk/by-id/ata-ST9250827AS_5RG1X6YB-part10 /back vfat users,uid=kuf,gid=mas,fmask=0177,dmask=0077,utf8=true 0 0 and my /etc/exports: # See the exports(5) manpage for a description of the syntax of this file. # This file contains a list of all directories that are to be exported to # other computers via NFS (Network File System). # This file used by rpc.nfsd and rpc.mountd. The installation DVD goes to the green background screen with "Boot From Hard Disk", "Installation", etc... If Installation is selected, the "Loading Kernel" progress bar comes up. Once it is done, the screen goes blank and does nothing from that point (the monitor acts as if the system turned off). Several screen resolutions and ACPI modes were tried with no luck. If using text-mode I get the message "Kernel alive Kernel really alive PANIC: early exception 0e rip 10:ffffffff8021c3ae error 0 cr2 ffffffffff5fc0f0" I have tried with the commercial CD and a network install CD. I have tried two different graphics cards, ATI Radeon Choosing x86 installs just fine on the Dell XPS. Either mode (x86_64 or x86) appears to install fine on the Dell Optiplex 330.
