It just happened for me several times (in OS 10.3 only, in OS 10.2 -- never), and it looks like it happen again. So... I simply work, switch desktop, write something, use KMail, Konqueror, nothing unusual. And all of the sudden keyboard is dead -- pressing caps lock does not help, adding additional keyboard does not change anything. I have to close all apps using mouse, end session, and keyboard works. It shall show the real content of the file and worry about non-printable characters only. however, in SUSE distros, as LESSOPEN environment variable is set by default, the surprising behavior of 'less' can be seen: showing a "resulting text" instead of the real PS or PDF document etc. As 'less' is one of the base utils on the system, the default behavior must be non-surprising and any magic power is to be set by the user (so he/she will know and care about it or doesn't turn it on at all, according to his/her decision). The current setup is also a difference to the UN*X systems so sysadmins of that systems aren't happy if SUSE Linux behaves different without any prior warning. It can be easily overriden for a specific user - there are GUI tools for it, e.g. in KDE - but there is no appropriate tool for setting the system-wide default setting (not even in the YaST config file editor). The only way to achieve this is manually adding /etc/fonts/local.conf with desired settings. If I'm not mistaken both shouldn't be needed as the daemons have to create those pipes themselves anyways as /dev/ is on tmpfs nowadays. The build service could be a bit more helpful here.
