'xemacs --version' yields the following output: XEmacs 21.5 (beta27) "fiddleheads" (+CVS-20060704) [Lucid] (i386-suse-linux, Mule) of Mon Nov 27 2006 on dale The crash should not depend on user specific options in ~/.xemacs as it also happens when the ~/.xemacs directory does not exist. One suggestion to get rid of the beep is to remove the 'pcspkr' kernel module. However this module is compiled into the SUSE kernels, so it cannot be removed. Other suggested workarounds are: - add 'set bell-style none' to /etc/inputrc - add 'setterm -blength 0' to /etc/profile.local - xset b off None of these are very user friendly.
