The oem image is on a usb stick. The kiwi initrd loads the edd module and choses a edd unique id as root device (/dev/disk/by-id/edd-int13_dev80-part1). The new initrd for sucessive boots however no longer finds that device and therefore fails to boot. This was with the KDE-3.5.10 desktop. With openSUSE-11.0 (kde-3.5.9) on this PC, a dialog box does pop up, although on the 10.3 PC, the work around noted in http://en.opensuse.org/NTFS-3g page ( cd /sbin; sudo ln -s mount.ntfs-3g mount.ntfs ) was necessary. I have not (yet) tried that work around on the 11.1 beta2 PC. On the 11.1 beta2 partition, yyping "fdisk -l" indicated the internal hard drive on the PC had partitions hda1 to hda7 and the external USB drive was sda1. This was strange to me, as the hdax nomenclature does not appear to be consistent with the libata behaviour I had seen on openSUSE-10.3 and 11.0. A manual mount point at /home/lee/data was created on the openSUSE-11.1 beta2 test PC, and the external USB formatted drive was successfully manually mounted with: mount -t ntfs-3g -o rw,uid=1000,gid=100,umask=0022 /dev/sda1 /home/lee/data The external USB drive was then accessible with konqueror. lsusb gives this detail on the external USB drive: Bus 003 Device 010: ID 0bc2:3000 Seagate RSS LLC (Its a seagate free agent 500 GByte drive formatted as NTFS). dmesg output (illustrating unsuccessful automount, and then final successful manual mount effort) is located here: http://pastebin.be/14129 While manually mounting an external drive is second nature to an experienced Linux user, it is a difficult task for newbies and users not familiar with terminal commanding. I recommend this be fixed. Installation etc went well and very slick! I'm using Vmware workstation client on a dell vostro laptop. install picked up network, wifi etc. very impressive. I also installed mono and that appears to have gone in cleanly. I also need ruby and the xml-simple package. I've tried installing xml-simple using ruby gems as a super user: "gem install xml-simple" - its been trying to this now for approx 20 minutes - it normally takes about 45 seconds. I installed ruby using the 'install software' option from 'computer' (the gtk version of yast? btw - the installer tools are now also very good). On none of my systems is any system software installed on anything but local filesystems. That means even though there may be active nfs mounts, there's no reason whatsoever I can think of for upgrade processes to stat them. Usually these systems have 4 exports from my local file server mounted, including during smart or zypper updating, which I normally do in runlevel 3. Today on one of my systems zypper dup was running along normally until I reached bug 446344 , after which the delay didn't cease even though the kernels were done installing. After about four hours elapsed to install the next relatively few packages I noticed that the downloading was proceeding normally, but the installations were all hanging. Eventually I got tired of waiting, expecting mirror updates to obsolete zypper's ref data before the end of the enormous time required to do the last 100 or so packages, so I did Ctrl-C. When zypper noticed, I got a cannot stat error on an NFS mount. My only guess what happened is that it has to do with zypper replacing portmap with rpcbind. After the zypper abort I did umount -t nfs -a, then redid zypper dup, and zypper proceeded to behave normally, quickly finishing the last 99 packages.
