The MSI K9A2 motherboard (Athlon64) has two drive controllers. The first deals with 4 SATA drives, and SuSE handles them exactly as it should. (One problem with earlier SuSEs was that the (SATA) CD-Rom drive locked, and couldn't be ejected after a SuSE LiveCD was shut down. A power-off reboot was necessary to unlock it. SuSE 11.1 RC1 has fixed that.) The second controller is identified by MSI as a Promise T3 controller. I believe it handles 4 drives: two PATA and two SATA drives. RC1 sees the PATA drives, but not the SATA drives. The Promise intends optionally to use the two SATA drives in a RAID configuration. However, I have only a single SATA drive and wish to use it in non-RAID form. Windows XP and Windows XP-64 have no trouble accessing that drive, but no Linux I have tried (including Ubuntu, Debian Etch, System Rescue CD, or Ubuntu 8.10 Ultimate Edition) is able to see that drive. Furthermore, the discussions I have found are unclear whether the same software works for the imbedded chips on the K9A2 motherboard and the PCI[?] boards Promise sells for use in other PC systems. If you think something can solve this access problem, I would be happy to try it on my hardware, but I am not sufficiently skilled in the programming art to compile drivers. The first is a proven problem. That is a problem where the "Online Update" can stop working if "compiz" is on because some windows can exceed the maximum allowed size on a 600 line display. The problem has been mentioned before in regard to the "Software Management" application. The second problem is that I have doubts about whether this application is working at all. So far, I have not seen an "Update" handled by this application in Beta 5. However, "zypper" turned up "upgrades" and "upgrades" showed up in "Software Management". But some of those "Upgrades" should have been handled by "Online Update". So I have to wonder if this program is substantially working working? Is there a difference between an "Update" and an "Upgrade"? The only clue is in the activity summary. The following is the entry corresponding with the crash, and identified as related to this computer: "**SYN Flood to Host** . . . (from WAN Outbound)" This report is primarily for information at this point. This is a problem which has not been uncommon, and is fixed by a driver or firmware change. In the case of this particular combination of hardware, I found it before using the originally supplied "Linpus Lite" software provided by Acer. A later driver update for "Linpus Lite" corrected the problem. Since "Linpus Lite" is based on Fedora 8 (with some Fedora 7 left over), it appears that the Fedora guys have fixed their driver. The purpose of the --force-install option was to remove the concerns that you mention. --show-depends and --dry-run only rely on the install commands being written carefully if --force-install is used. So a distro that wants to use modprobe --show-depends --force-install module to get a full list of dependencies needs to make sure the install commands are written carefully. People who don't want to use the new functionality don't need to care. I have a new patch which I will attach. It fixes a bug (--dry-run wasn't being passed down to child modprobes), adds documentation, and changes the $TRUE_INSMOD part of change. Instead of $TRUE_INSMOD being replaced by either 'true' or 'false' we now have $PROTECT replaced by with empty-string or ':'. As ':' is a no-op command to the shell, something like /sbin/modprobe --ignore-install foo && $PROTECT /sbin/somecommand will become /sbin/modprobe --ignore-install foo && /sbin/somecommand in normal usage, and /sbin/modprobe --ignore-install foo && : /sbin/somecommand for a dry-run or show-depends. The : /sbin/somecommand will do nothing which is what we want in this case. If you want something more sophisticated you can still use and 'if' e.g. if [ -n "$PROTECT" ] ; then one-thing ; else another ; fi I think this is simpler, and has the advantage that if you use $PROTECT in an install command read by an old modprobe, it will quietly be ignored (as unknown variables are simply replaced by an empty string by the shell).
