Saw hostname and domain name greyed out (ie, couldn't be edited), so exited - but pressed 'OK' in error. The hostname settings in these two files then changed to: /etc/hosts: '127.0.0.2 -f -f' /etc/HOSTNAME: '-f' Since the hostname and domain name were greyed out, the default behaviour should have been to preserve what was set there, even if 'OK' was selected. Alternatively, if setting is for NetworkManager to control networking, and not YaST, then the default behaviour, even if 'OK' is selected, should be to do nothing. That is, if NetworkManager is in control, ignore YaST unless 'ifup' method is selected. While openSUSE offers infrastructure to create special Live images for USB sticks, there should be the possibility to take a regular Live CD, copy its contents to a FAT32-formatted USB stick, install syslinux, and run the Live system 1:1 from a USB stick. This is possible with Ubuntu, Fedora, and most other Live CDs out there. In fact, for both Fedora and Ubuntu there are GUI tools to convert a running Live CD into a Live USB system (without changing the compressed filesystem or initrd). e.g. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Live_USB_system_creator The changes required to boot the openSUSE Live CD image from a USB stick are not big. Essentially, the following would need to be done: The following kernel modules should be part of the Live CD initrd by default: * nls_cp437.ko * nls_iso8859-1.ko * vfat.ko * fat.ko The function "CDDevice" in file "include" in the initrd of the Live CD should be slightly extended so that the main compressed filesystem is searched not only on IS9660 CD-ROMs, but also on VFAT partitions, e.g. on USB drives. See the following page for a hack that makes it possible to run the Live CD image from a USB stick. After 12 tries i got a message that the config.kde.isoclient cound not be found. Partitioner reports 2-3times less actions that it finally does so the SlideShow skips to (say) 32% and waits for partitioner to finish. 2.) SlideShow progress is counted incorrectly, after 32% shown for partitioner (100% for partitioner) it skips to 26% (the maximum reserved for partitioner). 3.) When images are deployed, sometimes they can't download details-i386.xml for unknown reason (reported as another bug) which in turn makes image deployment stop at 26% and wait for image deployment to finish (0% reserved for deployment). 4.) When 'digested' files are downloaded, some helper files are additionally downloaded, for instance directory.yast (twice), content file. First it failed to install the package kit update, then once this was manually installed with the HAL update the next set of updates failed to install also. The applet would display multiple notifications that new updates were available, then it would add duplicate items to the list of available updates. However, eth0 got an IPV4 address but nothing else has happened: it could not contact to the outer world, even not by pinging known IP-addresses and there was no name resolution at all (not in the internal network).
