This makes it impossible to find: I searched the whole application and ended up filing a bug report in the KDE bug tracking system. For the LONGTMP-directory (presumably this could be /var/tmp), there is no such fine tuning possible, like e.g. "OWNER_TO_KEEP_IN_LONGTMP". However, this drawer is completely filled up on my computer, I cannot even summarily delete files as bash complains about a too long argument. Morever, there are some files in this drawer I don't want to be deleted, especially the KDE cache for my user ID (Favicons and so on). I would like to have some setting to selectively clean the LONGTMP, too. But to do this, boot.rootfsck has to remount the root filesystem readonly. Intermittently the remount fails (and therefore the check does not happen) because something has files open for writing in the root. It turns out that the culprit is modprobe. /sbin/udevsettle (in boot.udev) waits until no further events need to be dispatched, but the last event(s) may still be in progress (driver being loaded) when it exits. The *real* fix would be in udevsettle, but I've attached a simple patch that retries the remount several times -- up to 10 seconds, though I've seen at most 2 seconds delay needed. The patch also includes code to recognize a boot parameter of "forcefsck", and for completeness I've also included the corresponding patch for boot.localfs. This is in the nature of a feature improvement, but I've found it to be very convenient in system administration. But looking in a problem with another guy I saw this: - I understand that the default gateway can be set by DHCP - Since in /etc/sysconfig/network/dhcp I have by default 'DHCLIENT_SET_DEFAULT_ROUTE="yes"' I suppose that Suse really uses the default gateway that the server sets. - When you use DHCP, in the DNS YaST2 module you have the options "Change Hostname via DHCP" and "Update Name Servers and Search List via DHCP" - When you use DHCP, in the routing YaST2 module you can set the default gateway bbut there isn't any "Update Default Gateway via DHCP" option. So the problem is that the lack of an "Update Default Gateway via DHCP" option when there is the equivalent for DNS is confusing. What an user should think? That default gateway can't be set via DHCP? If he knows is possible he probably will think that Suse isn't able to do it. What if the user doesn't wants to set the default gateway via DHCP but wants to set via DHCP the other network parameters? The same happens on the Acer Ferrari 1000, it's suspend problem is tracked in bug 228344. Needs more testing and fixing of the issues found, for example the broken unload of button.ko.
