So to configure it I installed and launched HPLIP, then tired to go in YaST Printer configuration. YaST hangs when it tries to rebuild the drivers database. I put as attachement a capture of YaST. At step 3 it blocks at 4%. I tried it for a while (4 hours) without success. It always possible to add a printer using CUPS Web frontend (http://localhost:631) or from KDE control Center. With KDE, I have a dialog box which indicates an error during the database drivers rebuild but without any comment, then it works. I tried to reinstall cups, cups-drivers, foomatic, Yast printer module, etc. It doesn't change anything. I didn't put Severity to normal because not everybody knows how to install printer without YaST, but not to critical because it's always possible to install a printer. The issue is that the PPD selected for the LaserJet 6L under openSUSE 10.2 is not suitable for US users. Specifically, the default PPD (Gutenprint 5.0 basic, apparently a renamed version of the terrible gimp-print drivers) vertically truncates output on US letter sized pages: some fraction of the text on the bottom of each page is not printed. I suspect that the driver is not honoring the Letter page size set in the filter settings. The Foomatic/ljet4 PPD can be selected manually and produces correct output. So this may be seen as either of two bugs: 1. YaST selects the wrong PPD for this printer 2. The gimp-print driver does not understand page sizes or otherwise truncates output The first alternative may be the better view, as I believe the gimp-print drivers to be of very low quality in general, at least for HP LaserJets. This likely comes from mozilla-embed-single.cpp::mozilla_set_default_prefs nsCOMPtr<nsIPrefService> prefService; prefService = do_GetService (NS_PREFSERVICE_CONTRACTID); NS_ENSURE_TRUE (prefService, FALSE); which is the same problem.
