gs 6.51
There were some bugs in the interaction between some of the gimp-print 4.1.xx series and ghostscript that caused sporadic errors. These have been fixed in gimp-print 4.2.0. I don't know which versions are standard in SuSE 7.2.
I've fsck'd yast2 somehow (I think it saved me time and did itself in through an online update) so I dont know. Looking @ the 7.2 dvd I find no (specific) reference to gimp-print. I've tried compiling 4.2, it seems to ./configure, make just fine then fails @ make install (I don't remember the error right now, I'm pretty sure it couldn't find a library that exists exactly where it was looking! ) I did print from gimp just fine last night (font antialiasing is currently turned off in kde 2.2.2) my setup linux 2.4.17, xfree86 4.2, kde2.2.2, ghostscript 6.51, gnome-print 0.32-15 (from suse), gimp-print not installed?
gimp-print is only designed to work with gpl versions of ghostscript and so doesn't work fully with ghostscript 7.x, but is fine with ghostscript 6.51 and earlier. JDL
So I take it that you are able to print from advanced editor/kmail without problems. thanks

I was able to print the cups printer test pages from YaST2 and KControlCenter but if I tried printing from kwrite or kmail a new process would start that used all available cpu time.
the process was
(all on one line in kpm) gs -dBATCH -dSAFER -dQUIET -dNOPAUSE --r300x300 -sDEVICE-cdj550 -dBitsPerPixel=3 -sOutputFile=|cat >&3 -

I think there may be a buggy interaction between ghostscript and the anti-alias fonts setting in KDE. If I set Anti-Aliasing to "on" in KDE then I can't print from kwrite or kmail ( I get the cpu hog gs process).
If I turn Anti-Aliasing "off" and restart the x server then printing works as expected.
Can someone verify this behavior or disprove it on their machine?

You should be able to tell when you print from Advanced editor. The properties button then Advanced tab will tell you CUPS+gimp-print 4.x.x if you are. I don't know if gimp-print is the best driver to use with a "cdj550". www.linuxprinting.org will help. I assume you changed to root before doing a "make install" on gimp-print 4.2.0.

Yes, with and without antialiasing. (I usually have it turned off because I work at 1280x1024 on a 17" monitor, which substantially reduces the advantages of antialiasing.) I have had problems very similar to what you describe when printing with CUPS, GS6.51 and one of the early 4.1.99b gimp-print drivers. This was when printing from StarOffice 5.2. I am using SuSE 7.3. Note that gimp uses the gimp-print plugin without the CUPS or ghostscript drivers. That is, it prints directly to the printer and so is much more robust than printing through ghostscript. You may well have a version of gimp-print installed for gimp, but be using different drivers with CUPS and ghostscript. JDL

Yes, did it as root. I'll check www.linuxprinting.org out, thanks.

Pretty similar to what I use, 1280x1024 on a 19" monitor, The antialiasing seems to mainly make some web sites less ugly in Konq.

Thanks John, I'm taking a short break from working out these problems, (getting to stressed about it) The info you sent gives me some things to look at. I'll let you know how things work out in a couple of days. Thanks again dh

I don't know whether or not it's better than gimp-print for your printer, but it may have the same problems with gs6.51. You could check for a newer version on www.linuxprinting.org. There's also a new driver from HP that you could try. It seems to be developing rapidly and there were some licensing issues for combining it with other systems: HP were saying you could only use hpijs with HP printers, but since that was self-evident anyway I think they've changed their minds. I can print from gimp with cups with my hp970cxi, but when I install gimp-print (4.2), the print option is no longer visible on the menu or the dropdown list from rightclicking on the pic. You might check for a printer entry in the .gimp-1.2/pluginrc file in your home directory. If there's none there then you can try deleting or renaming the .gimp-1.2 directory, which should get recreated with reasonable default settings next time you start gimp. JDL

OK, I checked the gimp pluginrc and gimp-print does not appear. I renamed pluginrc and another was created, again without any mention of gimp-print. SO, I uninstalled gimp-print and then had to reinstall gimp, because I still did not have the ability to print. ?? -- Pat Shanahan Registered Linux User #207535 Registered at: http://counter.li.org

All I can add is that I haven't encountered this particular problem. Occasionally I have had to delete the entire .gimp-1.2 directory when experimenting with bits of code and that always fixed the problem. JDL
