I don't know whether or not it's better than gimp-print for your printer, but it may have the same problems with gs6.51. You could check for a newer version on www.linuxprinting.org. There's also a new driver from HP that you could try. It seems to be developing rapidly and there were some licensing issues for combining it with other systems: HP were saying you could only use hpijs with HP printers, but since that was self-evident anyway I think they've changed their minds. Yes, with and without antialiasing. (I usually have it turned off because I work at which substantially 1280x1024 on a 17" monitor, reduces the advantages of antialiasing.)
Pretty similar to what I use, 1280x1024 on a 19" monitor, The antialiasing seems to mainly make some web sites less ugly in Konq. Makes sense. AA turns pixels on the edge of characters to grayscale, which will have a more noticeable effect on a 19" monitor.
