Hi,
I've come across a web that show a lot of data useful to the Usability
Experts :)
Example:
Screen Resolutions for Year 2008
http://marketshare.hitslink.com/report.aspx?qprid=17&qpmr=100&qpdt=1&qpct=3…
1024 x 768 44.35%
1280 x 800 14.95%
1280 x 1024 13.08%
800 x 600 6.92%
1440 x 900 5.68%
1680 x 1050 3.63%
Please, keep this in mind when designing applications :)
Have a nice day
Lukas

Hi everybody,
a quite wise CUPS expert once said "exchange dungeons by trees" and that
was an inspiration for me to take your feedback and make another series
of mock ups:
http://en.opensuse.org/YaST/Development/Printer_Enhancement#Release_Candida…
What do you think about it?
The first feedbacks revealed a great sense of confusion about the amount
and design of information presented in the overview.
Thats why the space acquired by help was used for an overview. (Help as
such will not be dropped it will move to a button within the navigation
area :-))
One thought was to hide "print via network", "sharing" and "CUPS
autoconfig" under a "Settings" category, but this idea was dropped as
the word "Settings" as such is quite meaningless.
We also exchange "Remote Access" with "Share Printers" as this might be
easier to understand.
I am looking forward to your comments,
Martin

Hello community
We would like to have a simple compiz settings manager to be a default
on openSUSE 11, simple-ccsm is what is developed by the
upstream(Compiz Fusion) developer Marex.
Please check it out and give your feedback and usability perspective.
It is currently packaged in experimental git repo and installs along
with Compiz Fusion packages via compiz-fusion-git 1-click install:
http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/cyberorg/openSUSE_10.3/comp…
You may have to remove regular compiz if you have it installed.
Thanks

AFAIK a remote queue is only broadcasted by CUPS. So I add a local queue
on my machine and share it with others. So they can see and use it but
they are not allowed to modify it.
This makes sense for me, as I don't want other users to screw up my
settings.

To add a printer you need to determine at least:
* Connection
* Driver
* Name for the queue
We decided not to do that in a pop-up, but in one screen.
The reason was that with the full screen wizards in YaST the user gets
easily lost.

Well, you are the first to say that you like the overall overview :-)
All the others said, that they were confused by it and liked the four
tab layout best.

Mhm. Then this would be something to be considered.

openSUSE is also used for servers.

Hi everyone,
after the feedback I got from you, I made two new mock ups for the
overview page:
http://en.opensuse.org/Image:Printer_mschmidkunz_overview_2tabs.pnghttp://en.opensuse.org/Image:Printer_mschmidkunz_overview_4tabs.png
I like the one with the four tabs best.
This was also the conclusion drawn by our sysadmins and one of our
designers.
But see for yourself :-)

Hi everyone,
I am sorry, but due to my current work with the printer module I was not
able to prepare anything for the style guide meeting tomorrow.
So as long as anyother doesn't want to jump in (topic would be "pop
ups") I say we cancel the meeting and see us on Tuesday next week.

Hi Michal,

Your welcome :-)
It took long enough :-)

This is correct for the desktop user, but as the printer module should
also be included in SLES we need to consider larger, complexer
environments as well.
> If we want to support print-servers with lots of connected printers then a

Yes, we also thought about that.
The point why we dropped it:
* as you can't add/edit/delete a remote queue there would be different
buttons needed for each queue type. This might potentially confuse the user
* if you want to add a new queue you therefore would have click on a
local queue to get an add button. This seemed quite unlogical to me.
But maybe you have any ideas how to solve this?
> Moreover, as I have few local printers and few remote I'd still like to

Yes, I agree with you. The point is, that we don't know whether the user
has only a few printer or whether he uses the module in a SLES environment.

:-)
Is it technically possible to select a remote queue as "default printer"?

Hi everyone,
as some of you may know it is now almost a year since we first try to
think (again) about a redesign of the printer module.
And now we are ready to present you a first release candidate :-)
You find it on:
http://en.opensuse.org/YaST/Development/Printer_Enhancement#Release_Candida…
I am very happy with it as it cleans up the kerfuffle the current module
shows at present:
* the depth of workflow was reduced from 9 levels to 3
* overall number of screens was reduced from over 30 to 10
* technical short wording was replaced by explanatory wording, which is
easy to comprehend
* dialog layout which also confused expert users was replaced by simple,
meaningful layout (or to put it into more poetic words: the user was
released from his dungeon :-))
At this point I would like to thank:
* Michal Zugec for putting the UI redesign on the agenda (and especially
in autumn when everyone already forgot about it)
* Johannes Meixner for his endless time, patience and comments
* everyone on the lists for their comments and participation
I am looking forward to your comments!
Have a nice weekend,
Martin
