I am considering whether to buy SuSE Linux 9.0 personal or professional, but there is precious little information on the SuSE website about the difference between the two. I might even go so far as to say, none (aside from some vague statements like "easy LAN integration" and "software development tools." I would really like to see something like the "product comparison chart" for 8.2 at http://www.suse.com/us/private/products/suse_linux/i386/pers_prof.html Although, even this could use links to a LOT more specifics. For instance, the chart says that SuSE Professional contains "scientific software," whereas the personal version does not. As I am a scientific user, this interests me, but I am not about to buy the professional version on the mere promise of "scientific software" that may in fact be of no use to me. For instance, chemistry-related software will not generally be of use to a space plasma physicist. Under "Security software", the above chart says that SuSE 8.2 personal has "basic" security software, and professional has "full" security software. How am I to know what this means? The page on Security under SuSE 8.2 does not contain a software list, just a lecture on not using root for daily tasks, and sales pitches for SuSE firewall and YAST. While I understand that the basic goal of these pages is to sell the software, I cannot make an informed decision until I have specific information. Is there any place I can go to find out, specifically, what the differences are (will be?) between SuSE 9.0 personal and professional? Thanks, Andy

AIUI, Personal contains PersonalFirewall (closes all incoming ports), whereas Professional also contains SuSEfirewall2 (allows much more configuration for allowing/forwarding incoming ports). Professional also probably comes with things like intrusion detection tools, rootkit checkers, and other things that you'd only bother putting on a public facing server, or when you were really paranoid about security. As others have suggested, I would check the package list for 8.2, as it's probably going to be pretty similar to 9.0. -- David Smith Work Email: Dave.Smith@st.com STMicroelectronics Home Email: David.Smith@ds-electronics.co.uk Bristol, England GPG Key: 0xF13192F2
Where can I find such a package list? As I stated in my original email, I have been entirely unable to find a package list for ANY SuSE product, aside from the selection that appears on distrowatch, which only lists the very basics. I am currently running SuSE 8.0 personal, so I have a decent idea what's included there, but I'm interested in the professional edition and I'd like to know specifically what it has that the personal edition doesn't. It does not appear SuSE has released a package description for SuSE 9.0 as yet. The following link is for SuSE 8.2, at the bottom of the page you will find links for the package descriptions for personal & professional http://www.suse.de/en/private/products/suse_linux/i386/index.html -- Regards, Graham Smith ---------------------------------------------------------
