Your provider doesn't have a clue.... pppd is the ppp daemon within Linux... It handles the ppp protocol when you dial the ISP. How was the modem set up (you say YAST but I have never used YAST to set up a modem)? If YAST set it up and it is only using pppd, then there are files that can be checked. But if she is connecting for 'awhile', then it sounds like the setup was correct. Could use some more info...

If it is not a dumb Win modem in SuSE it is rather easy if it is a serial Com port modem use Yast2. Try "minicom" which can help find the modem and or "hwinfo --modem". If it is PCI then as I remember it is most likely ttyS4. Link /dev/modem to which ever device it is. Also try wvdial after configuring /etc/wvdial.conf.
Problems after connecting normally come from "pppd died" which normally is a problem with the permission set on /usr/sbin/pppd - Security Headaches again. -rwsr-xr-x 1 root dialout 217696 2003-05-23 07:26 /usr/sbin/pppd fix it Also set it in /etc/permission.(whatever you use) -- 73 de Donn Washburn __ " http://www.hal-pc.org/~n5xwb " Ham Callsign N5XWB / / __ __ __ __ __ __ __ 307 Savoy St. / /__ / / / \/ / / /_/ / \ \/ / Sugar Land, TX 77478 /_____/ /_/ /_/\__/ /_____/ /_/\_\ LL# 1.281.242.3256 a MSDOS Virus "Free Zone" OS Email: n5xwb@hal-pc.org Info: http://www.knoppix.net

Don't! Do it in /etc/permission.local If you touch any of the other files, you risk loosing your modifications after a patch or update. -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson

Have her try kppp (assuming she uses kde). It is easy to setup, and works similarly to Windows dialup networking. The defaults should work, just supply the number, username, password, etc. I have used it a long time, and it works great for a dialup connection. -- Joe Morris New Tribes Mission Email Address: Joe_Morris@ntm.org Web Address: http://www.mydestiny.net/~joe_morris Registered Linux user 231871 God said, I AM that I AM. Get them fired. They don't know head or tails. pppd is the linux program that handles the ppp protocol. -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson
