Kpackage - Information
The one useful piece of software not included with SuSE 8.1 is kpackage. I tried XMIN and other similar packages but none are as good as kpackage, in my opinion. <flame_stopper> If some of you do not agree that kpackage is better than other RPM front-ends, please do not flame me. This is purely my preference. </flame_stopper> Downloading Kpackage as source and RPM has not been a successful experience. However, after a lot of trial and error, there is a package that can be installed to provide this useful tool. It is called "kdeadmin3-3.0.4-0.i586.rpm". Although the site from which this package was downloaded cannot be remembered, a search on google should help to locate this package. The file size is 1 MB. Hope this helps to anyone trying to find kpackage for use on SuSE 8.1. All the best. LW999

Kpackage _is_ included with 8.1 pro, it's just not on the cd/dvd media. :: /var/lib/YaST2/you/i386/update/8.1/rpm/i586/kdeadmin3-3.0.4-6.i586.patch.rpm it's part of YOU update process. -- Patrick Shanahan Registered Linux User #207535 http://home.indy.rr.com/paka @ http://counter.li.org icq#173753138

Well, I've been using SuSE since 7.1 and every version since and kpackage has always been a part of the included packages. And kdeadmin has been integrated into yast2 for a while now. I have had no problems with if in a long while. Earlier versions, I think since the 0.x version, had some glitches but it's fairly steady. I'm not sure you have looked at all the packages, there are over 1800 of them, put aside the defaults and system required packages and there's an awful lot of optional stuff one can decide to install. I usually find that using YaST and then looking under the "group" settings for packages show that there is a huge number of packages to pick from. I would suggest doing something like this. Then if the versions supplied by SuSE are current you can get the update rpm and do a "-Uhv" and get the packages up to date. Just seems like a lot of work to install from scratch when the package is already on the disk. Cheers, Curtis. :)

Hmm. It's interesting that you took the time to write a <flame_stopper> section, which I don't have a problem with, as I agree with you, kpackage can be usefull and I do use it sometimes. What you did NOT do however was take the time to do a simple search in YaST2 which would have shown you that yes, kdeadmin3 (and therefore kpackage) IS included with SuSE 8.1 (Infact it was in 8.0 and 7.3 and probably earlier versions also)
Downloading Kpackage as source and RPM has not been a successful experience.
Sorry for that. Why were you trying to download it? Its on the CD (and the SuSE ftp site)

I was not aware that it was on the CD. How can it be accessed? <snip> __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Everything you'll ever need on one web page from News and Sport to Email and Music Charts http://uk.my.yahoo.com

If you run YaST2, from the Software section, select "Install or Remove Software" In the top right corner of the screen that pops up, there is a drop down box titled "Filters". Change it from "Selections" to "Search" and type "kdeadmin3" in the search box and hit search, you will see it. Alternatively if you were to select "Package Groups" instead of "Search" you will see it in the group "System - GUI - KDE" -- Peter Nixon http://www.peternixon.net/ PGP Key: http://www.peternixon.net/public.asc

A search for kpackage showed up nothing. It was not obvious that kpackage is part of kdeadmin. Is there a way of finding out if applications are part of a package? <snip> __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? You did the right thing and it will usually work just fine. For some reason searching for kpackage will show nothing. No matter how you set up the search criteria it isn't found. Yet it is there. Mark
You will neet to install "kdeadmin"-package G.l :)

Use "pin" instead - it does find it inside kdeadmin3. -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson
