Is there a way to save a Real stream to disk? I would like to keep the new Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy series, the first episode of which is now available from the BBC's website as a Real stream or a WMV stream. I can play it fine using Realplayer but can't save it - any ideas? Never done it in linux, but
http://www.google.com/search?q=record+stream+linux throws up some
interesting results.
Maybe you could try some of the software from
http://all-streaming-media.com/record-video-stream/all-streaming-video-recor...
You want to be careful about breaking copyright agreements, simply
being able to view a broadcast doesn't give you complete ownership of
it. If you're ok on the copyright issue you can download the entire
Hitchiker's series over the edonkey network.
I'd find and post links, but I don't want to be labled a pirate :-)

I use vsound ( http://www.xenoclast.org/vsound/ ) and trplayer ( http://www.linux-speakup.org/trplayer.html ) to do this - works fine... Dylan

I've already got the first two series on tape, but thanks! This is an entirely new set of radio series based on the last three books in the HHGTTG book series. Hence my wanting to hear them :-) John -- John Pettigrew Headstrong Games john@headstrong-games.co.uk Fun : Strategy : Price http://www.headstrong-games.co.uk/ Board games that won't break the bank Knossos: escape the ever-changing labyrinth before the Minotaur catches you!

John, If you have all the plugins installed for XMMS, you should be able to listen too and save the streams with it. It will stream realplayer files, so you shouldn't have any trouble. You may have to do a little research on xmms as to how it can do this, but saving out as .wav or .ogg or .mp3 should be possible. Unfortunately, xmms stopped playing realplayer files after I installed RealPlayer 10 :-( There doesn't seem to be an equivalent file to the RP8 plugin in the RP10 distribution. I found that Kaffeine would play the file, and tried to save it from there. However, it seems to be protected because Kaffeine complained that it couldn't save copyright-protected material. I guess that, if the BBC want to keep it live only, I'll have to live with that. Nah, just read the comments on slashdot. Someone has already come up with the needed mplayer command. :) I haven't tested it yet, but for what it's worth: mplayer -dumpstream mms://wm.bbc.co.uk/radio4/hitchhikers/h2g3_episode1.asf Regards, Pieter Hulshoff

Tried the Packman copy of Kaffeine? I've seen a lot of "limitations" imposed by the SuSE-bundled players to be gone from the Packman releases...

I'm using the Packman version - I need it to play DVDs anyway! IANAL AIUI, you may record for your own entertainment what you hear publically as long as you do not invade someone's privacy by recording private conversation w/o the other person's knowledge. This is not piracy, it's paranoia. :^| -- Patrick Shanahan Registered Linux User #207535 http://wahoo.no-ip.org @ http://counter.li.org HOG # US1244711 Photo Album: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/photos

I just got home. I get the same message, but that doesn't appear to stop it from streaming the audio. It's currently creating the dump file on my machine. I'll see how it turns out. Regards, Pieter Hulshoff

But then sharing what you record over eDonkey certainly is piracy, especially as what I thought he was asking for was the TV series that has been released on DVD. If I start posting links to copyrighted material then I'm sure I'd be breaking mailing list rules. Anyway, back on topic. Just to add one other suggestion, now that I know you only want to capture audio, if all else fails you can feed a cable from your line out port to your microphone port and record the sound directly. You'll lose a bit of quality unless your sound card has optical ports but at least you'll have a copy.

Well, the dump itself went fine, but the stream was not correctly buffered. The audiospeed therefore differs quite a bit here and there, causing small skips and slowdowns. I'll see if there are alternatives possible. Regards, Pieter Hulshoff

I use Audacity (avaolable on SuSE dvd or Packman). Trick is to start to record, and THEN only to start realplayer play. You can then export as Wav or mp3. FX
