[opensuse] printing to cups from macos ?
I'll throw this out here - just in case. We have a new Mac in the office, sort of BYOD style - as in, "I don't mind, but you're on your own for support". Well, I should have known better :-( Printing to our printers over cups seems to be an issue from the Mac. It looks like print jobs are queued, but they never print. Given that CUPS is Apple software, this is difficult to accept ... We have googled a lot, but I know very little about Macs, so it's like groping in the dark. Does anyone have any hints they want to share? -- Per Jessen, Zürich (-3.7°C) http://www.dns24.ch/ - your free DNS host, made in Switzerland. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

A bit more information might help. What are the printers? Do they support Bonjour? Can the mac see them using lpinfo? What's in the logs? etc

I understand the idea is not for the Mac to print to the printers directly, but to the CUPS print server. -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. (from 15.0 x86_64 at Telcontar)

Yeah, I appreciate that.
What are the printers?
Kyoceras, FS-C5015N.
Do they support Bonjour? Can the mac see them using lpinfo? What's in the logs? etc
The printers are not accessed directly, only by way of our central CUPS print server. The Mac can see them, and print jobs are queued, but only locally on the Mac. I was under the impression that this sort of thing should "just work" with a Mac - we have occasionally had people with Windows laptops visiting, they've had no problems. (mind you, that was with Samba). -- Per Jessen, Zürich (-0.4°C) http://www.dns24.ch/ - free dynamic DNS, made in Switzerland. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

When you say the Mac can see them, you mean applications list the CUPS server's queues for the printers in their print dialogs? Can you send a print job from the command line? What's in the Mac's logs and the CUPS server's? What does lpstat show?

Yes, the user sees the printers, and can print to them. The printjobs just don't leave the Mac.
Can you send a print job from the command line?
I'll see if that works.

Currently just empty. I'll ask the user to try again. -- Per Jessen, Zürich (5.4°C) http://www.hostsuisse.com/ - dedicated server rental in Switzerland. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Not sure, as my note is a bit older already. But it seems that (at some point) Apple had disabled looking for remote cups servers via the cups protocol, and you'd have to re-enable it using cupsctl BrowseRemoteProtocols=cups (though I'd then not expect them to see the queue at all?) -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org
