[opensuse] Display artifacts in Leap 42.3, on oldish laptop with Intel Video
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA256 Hi, I just upgraded my laptop to Leap 42.3 from 42.2 (offline upgrade aka dvd method), and I see artifacts on the display: areas that do not redraw, typically the menu area of a window. Some time whole windows that take seconds to redraw after switching the workarea. Gkrelmm has zones that are unreadable for long time, even if I put another window on top to try force a redraw (the CPU_0 panel, for instance, is gargabe). This instant, the whole Thunderbird went unreadable as I switched worskpace (I'm typing at Alpine). I'm not happy. minas-tirith:~ # hwinfo --display 08: PCI 02.0: 0300 VGA compatible controller (VGA) [Created at pci.378] Unique ID: _Znp.rCqQQ9NkN2D SysFS ID: /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:02.0 SysFS BusID: 0000:00:02.0 Hardware Class: graphics card Model: "Intel Mobile 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller" Vendor: pci 0x8086 "Intel Corporation" Device: pci 0x2a42 "Mobile 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller" SubVendor: pci 0x103c "Hewlett-Packard Company" SubDevice: pci 0x3069 Revision: 0x07 Driver: "i915" Driver Modules: "i915" Memory Range: 0xd0000000-0xd03fffff (rw,non-prefetchable) Memory Range: 0xc0000000-0xcfffffff (ro,non-prefetchable) I/O Ports: 0x4110-0x4117 (rw) IRQ: 26 (8103 events) I/O Ports: 0x3c0-0x3df (rw) Module Alias: "pci:v00008086d00002A42sv0000103Csd00003069bc03sc00i00" Driver Info #0: Driver Status: i915 is active Driver Activation Cmd: "modprobe i915" Config Status: cfg=no, avail=yes, need=no, active=unknown 09: PCI 02.1: 0380 Display controller [Created at pci.378] Unique ID: ruGf.MfB3K+fOff2 SysFS ID: /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:02.1 SysFS BusID: 0000:00:02.1 Hardware Class: graphics card Model: "Intel Mobile 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller" Vendor: pci 0x8086 "Intel Corporation" Device: pci 0x2a43 "Mobile 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller" SubVendor: pci 0x103c "Hewlett-Packard Company" SubDevice: pci 0x3069 Revision: 0x07 Memory Range: 0xd2400000-0xd24fffff (rw,non-prefetchable) Module Alias: "pci:v00008086d00002A43sv0000103Csd00003069bc03sc80i00" Config Status: cfg=no, avail=yes, need=no, active=unknown Primary display adapter: #8 minas-tirith:~ # - -- Cheers Carlos E. Well, X froze (Xfce). The mouse responded, but not the keyboard. I did ctrl-alt-f1, did init 3, init 5, but X did not came back. I'm typing in text mode. I'll have to reboot to recover. I'm not happy at all with 42.3 :-( -- Cheers Carlos E. R. (from openSUSE 42.3 x86_64 "Malachite" (Minas Tirith))

This affects older intel, I've got a sandy bridge. That drm-kmp-default 4.9.33_k4.4.79_4-5.2 you've got is the one in update that did fix the issue. I vaguely remember fonts and firefox looking different in 42.3 after 42.2, can't remember if I did something or if I've just got used to it. I've had to customize things every leap update so far. It mentions a gpu crash dump, how do I get it?
Now I had to start graphics (after hard reboot) to start Network Manager, but I'm typing in text mode, in Alpine.
Probably you have already solved (did not investigate the whole thread). I had the same problem, this is due to changes in drm-kpm-default package. You have to uninstall it and to embargo it. Then you do mkinitrd and you should run the video normally. The intel-x86 driver does not work anymore for the most as it does not receive any reasonable updates from intel any more. With the above and driving the video from the kernel, the freezing should stop. _________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________ Ihre E-Mail-Postfcher sicher & zentral an einem Ort. Yes, the machine works fine without that rpm. -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. (from 42.2 x86_64 "Malachite" at Telcontar)

Hi,
I just upgraded my laptop to Leap 42.3 from 42.2 (offline upgrade aka dvd method), and I see artifacts on the display: areas that do not redraw, typically the menu area of a window.
Well, X froze (Xfce). The mouse responded, but not the keyboard. I did ctrl-alt-f1, did init 3, init 5, but X did not came back. I'm typing in text mode.
I'll have to reboot to recover.
I'm not happy at all with 42.3 :-(

It wasn't, and it is now. I also uninstalled drm-kmp-default. Now there are no artifacts, and the machine seems stable, but will have to use it much longer to confirm. - -- Cheers, Carlos E. R. It was found that in the original bug, which was also caused by drm-kmp-default, that the more strain on x the more likely a gpu hang. I could work in xfce without a problem but in plasma5 as soon as thunderbirds new mail pop up appeared I had a hang. If you reduce your system memory it's more likely to occur, use kernel line mem=1G to boot up with less memory if you want to check if it's fixed. That made hangs with xfce as well. AFAIK it is there, it is gpu log, the output from "/sys/class/drm/card0/error". Or is it something else?

Ok :-) Will report, later tonight, hopefully.

I suppose you should thank me for getting the bug fixed at the release of 42.3 then. Dave P -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Thanks :-) It shows that I really should have tested 42.3 beta on my laptop test partition at the time, but I didn't. My fault for that. I thought it was too old to be affected. I just upgraded my laptop to Leap 42.3 from 42.2 (offline upgrade aka dvd method), and I see artifacts on the display: areas that do not redraw, typically the menu area of a window.
I'm not happy.

just guessing from previous conversations, do: rpm -q Mesa-dri if you don't have it, install it. was a problem on Tw and wouldn't even allow starting the graphics mode, but might be you problem. -- (paka)Patrick Shanahan Plainfield, Indiana, USA @ptilopteri http://en.opensuse.org openSUSE Community Member facebook/ptilopteri Registered Linux User #207535 @ http://linuxcounter.net Photos: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/piwigo paka @ IRCnet freenode -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Leap 42.3, there doesn't seem to be a Mesa-dri. There is a Mesa-dri-nouveau, which is installed, so that's clearly not my problem here ... Cheers, Wol -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Uninstall drm-kmp-default the Mesa-dri issue was in tumbleweed due to a package split. In fact if you add your clout to: https://bugzilla.suse.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1077885 it might speed things up. Just tried to un-install it, and it looks like it's installing! So it seems I'm having the problem when it's NOT installed ... I'll see what difference it makes with it installed ... Now this is very curious. I see I did "zypper install Mesa-dri", but it is not installed and "zypper se Mesa-dri" finds nothing. I removed drm-kmp-default, that is certain, and the artifacts disappeared. Also no crash so far. - -- Cheers, Carlos E. R.
